I just bought and installed the game last night, I have read the forums both on this site and the D2 website as well done everything that was recommended, and it still crashes after i select "start new game". Anything else someone might suggest?

¨It has been reported that some people cannot run the WMV's in-game because they have a chaotic collection of all kinds of shady codecs and untrustworthy codec packs installed. Let's face it: codecs are wild anarchy. If your game crashes when starting up, or after creating your avatar, remove all codecs you have on your pc, and then re-install Microsoft's WMV Codec pack just to make sure.¨

Have you tried that one? Copied from games official forums. I pray that you get to play this asap. Its very enjoyable but not 9/10 game.

Sorry for double post but i remembered that ffdshow codec could be the reason. It's at default not using it in oblivion which uses same engine as divinity 2 and fallout 3 crashes for some people because of ffdshow. I also suggest updating soundcard drivers coz when i played FO3 it kept crashing like no tomorrow before i updated it. Soundcard was integrated Realtek by the way.

Ps. If you are using nocd crack then reinstall and don't use it. I am not meaning that you pirated it but some people do use them on retai games.

I did as you said but no change, I have also bought fallout 3 on steam before i got DKS, and it works fine, never had a problem with it.

I have the same problem : crash on the intro video. I tried everythig said on the forums ( larian's, fansite's...) : updated my drivers, checked my codecs, etc.

I found a "solution" : just take the videos out of their steamapps\common\divinity ii - dragon knight saga\data directory. You won't have it anymore in the game, but you'll have the game...

Btw, works also with editors' video ! No more waiting before getting ingame !

Ps : do NOT delete the video files, eventually, they'll fix the bug, ,and we'll be alble to get the vids back...

I hope that you don't need to do that to ALL VIDEOS IN GAME, because that seriously would kill the immersion. Maybe you could try to watch next video scene and see if it's crashing in that too. You could also to try to redownload game from steam coz videos might have corrupted or something.

I'm gonna try this. And it does not come from the videos, I can watch them on Mediaplayer without any crash.

/Edit : test done, my pc crashed on the first video... Back to "no vids" system... :^/

Did everyone report this problem on our forum (http://www.larian.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=50&page=1)?

The problem is installed codecs that cause the crash. We highly recommend to uninstall ffdshow (since it runs extra software in the background).
Also make sure that the movies play in Windows Media Player. If it doesn't play in that player, it won't play in the game (since it uses DirectShow)

We have some users where this problem persists even when every codec is reinstalled, so we are gathering as much information as we can. We have a diagnostic tool (http://www.larian.com/hotfixes/supporttool/LPC_Divinity2.exe) that generates a report that you can send to support@larian.com. This would really help us to find a solution for this codec problem.

Like I said before, I do not have any codec pack installed on my computer.

Also make sure that the movies play in Windows Media Player. It is.

If the game crashes after you click New Game in the menu, try installing the AC3 Audio Filters. http://ac3filter.net/projects/ac3filter/releases

This is known to have helped people with the same issue.

There may be a more official way to solve this, with a more technical explanation, but I think installing these makes sure your audio codecs work...

I had this problem when I first bought the original game. After reading a ton of suggestions and opinions this worked for me.

First I uninstalled "all" video software other than the default WMP (i run XP)

I then downloaded the K-Lite Codec pack, installed it and the game worked and I was able to play and get past the intro video.

Maybe this will help some of you! (i hope)

Here's where I got the file.

Good Luck!
