L4D 1 and 2 is the only game that does this to me. It automatically switches my mic setting in:

accessories>entertainment>volume control>options>properties>recording

to "Microphone". That is, it checks that repeatedly. "Microphone" of course being the front of the computer that you can plug in your mic too. Unfortunately for me, my front plug doesn't work, so I always use the rear one, aka "Rear Mic" in the settings. Every other game, including steam games, does not switch it to Microphone automatically when loading a game, but L4D does. What it means is, if I want to be able to have VOIP (so crucial IMO, and way more fun) I have to alt tab EVERY SINGLE TIME after the loading of a "phase".

Example:

A game is launched of Dead center, I'm playing on the infected first. I have to alt tab, go to the recording controls and change it BACK to rear mic. It stays good when we play the survivors, but when it loads the next "phase" of the campaign I have to do it again.

Obviously this is really NOT good because L4D does not seem to like alt tabbing too much and often it can take 20-30 seconds, by which time the game has probably already started... so I either have no mic, or I start late :p.

Anyone got any ideas of a way to force L4D or just force my computer in general to ALWAYS have the "Rear Mic" box selected?

As far as I am aware, the front mic needs to be turned on via the BIOS system. Follow these steps:

1 Enter BIOS SETUP -> Advanced Screen -> Chipset configuration

2 Set the option "Onboard HDMI HD Audio" to [Auto]

3 Save and Exit

N.B. Take a note of your original settings in case you have to revert back.

Hope it works for you.

No but I want the front mic turned OFF so that L4D doesn't auto-switch to it! Remember it's my rear mic I'm using.

What do I need to do in the BIOS to achieve that?

Sorry - I read your question wrong.

First try your Audio sound:

Control Panel
Sound and Audio devices
Audio Tab
In Sound recording, make sure correct device is selected from the dropdown
Select Volume
Under Microphone, select Advanced...
Deselect Front Panel Microphone.

Mine was the opposite, forced rear mic on map change only in L4D maps. Not sure how to get around it for you, other then always have it in the working port.

Can you just disable Front Mic in Audio Devices?
