On first impression, it look sleek... on second, what's the point? I don't mean for this to sound offensive, but I saw some of Valve's games and mods listed there - why would I install a second program to play mods for HL2 when I just need Steam for that?

Pretty much what I think of it. I've already bought loads of games on Steam, and I don't see any reason to switch over.

I like how it says you can offer content to THOUSANDS OF GAMERS.

There are few mods that can be installed via Steam. If you want more mods, you go to ModDB or to official page and download an installer or package with mod. Desura will detect games you have installed and offers you big loads of mods you can try. You don't even have to buy games via Desura - it's like a mod manager. One click mod installation, files validation, big community, user comments, user ratings...
Definitely interesting.

It would be nice to be able to validate your mod content like we can our Steam games but a free service digging around in my rig I don't know.

One thing I noticed is that when you're using the Already-Installed Game Finder thing in Desura, it warns that it will update the game. Probably just to ensure compatibility with the mods, but...

Too little, too late. Maybe if they would've come out with it in 2004 but by now it's just not going to be able to compete.

You mean like all the other DD Services popping up long after Steam that are having a healthy flow of income?

Yes, I do mean all those other ones that I've never heard of.

Direct 2 Drive, Impulse, GamesGate, EA Digital Store, GFWL.. need I keep naming DD Services?

As you have to do is service your customers and give them what they aren't getting from their current provider. I like Steam but they aren't unbeatable. GFWL could be real competition if they listened to their PC customers but being really only interested in their 360 their heart isn't in it. Also they have no vision it's just about maximum profits not creating brand loyalty. I've never bought from D2D but at this point though I haven't heard anything bad about them, I don't see anything better to make me buy from them over Steam. EA downloader? Please I didn't just get off the turnip truck.

EA has had plenty of great sales for their games you wouldn't see on Steam. The point is they are all other outlets that make decent income. The new EA Downloader is actually pretty nice compared to the old one.

Do they still have the "1 year to download your game" rule?

Nah, that havent had that for prolly a few years now. Back then the EA Downloader was sucktastic.. now it's a lot more user friendly and not well sucky.

Hey Guys,
My name is Mark and i'm the lead coder for Desura (also work on the Source Mod Golden Eye). Desura is from the same company that owns and operates Moddb so we are aiming at having a lot of expandable content on it and also as many Indie games as we can handle.
The biggest complaints we get from users on Moddb is that they don't understand how to install mods and get them working. Thus we are hopping to be able to make one click install of mods and games.
If you have any questions, feel free to post and ill try answer them all.
Mark
P.S. The Desura team had a meeting with Valve last year at GDC which was interesting. :)
Looks like it could shape up to something interesting. One.... interested Mac user here. Now if only Valve would release the Mac Source SDK so that half of the interesting stuff on Desura would get ported to the Mac :P I would use Windows, except that it's not my preferred platform; things tend to get forgotten in the void that is my Bootcamp partition :P

Agreed.

That's one meeting I would have loved to overhear. Can I make a suggestion though? Follow UI conventions. The toolbar/tabbar/etc. of Desura is an utter mess right now.

Half of theyre games are just short cuts....
I don't agree with the bump mainly because Desura isn't worth being bumped. The thing wasn't even installed very long on my computer.
