I have found a fix for the issue where the game thinks you have a 360 pad plugged in and wont let you use the keyboard. This fix works with my Saitek Gamers keyboard so i presume it will work with all.
Open device manager and go to human interface devices. Disable all extra keyboard bits except the main one. In my case this was "Saitek Gamers Keyboard USB". I disabled stuff like "Saitek Gamers keyboard Hot keys".
After this the game not longer gets confused and you can use the keyboard as normal.
