I have X2, and not having a cockpit in X3 sucks, it totally takes away from the atmosphere of feeling like you're sitting in a ship with nothing but outer space on the other side of a window. It makes a big difference, imo. Are there mods that add a cockpit?

Also, those speckled dust clouds that keep appearing in front of you while flying, that you then fly through, they look really bad when you get up close to them. Is there a way to turn them off?

Here you go, I wrote this here before - hope it helps:

New player here, so probably going to give some awful advice. I haven't had time to go through all the guides or spend that much time playing as yet. So far it's been fun though.

One thing that bothered me is that X3:TC doesn't seem to put you in a spaceship cockpit. As daft as it sounds I'd like to be in a wee spaceship and not just 'full screen' my hud.

With a quick googling I did these steps to set me up with cockpits:

(1) Download the mod from here (massive forums to read!):

http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=254635&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

(2) Create a new 'mods' folder under your X3 install steam structure. Mine is this:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\x3 terran conflict\mods

(3) Put the files from the archive in (1) into the new folder, i.e. you'll have these in there now (Note: I chose the with Hud one):

PSCO1_CockpitMod_v1.25_wHUD.cat
PSCO1_CockpitMod_v1.25_wHUD.dat

(4) When you start X3:TC then the launcher will show a 'Select Mod Package' button. This button is one of four under the 'Graphics Settings' button. When you see the list of mods then click

PSCO1_CockpitMod_v1.25_wHUD

..to highlight it and press ok.

Now when you launch the game then I now have a cockpit! (I started as an Argon trader if that helps). The joystick hat switch also looks around too.

For any experienced players, is this the best mod for cockpits? Hopefully this helps other new players too...

Thanks for that mod link. I installed them, and they're a bit low res, imo, but they're definitely nice to have.
