I have seen several posts about crashes. I have been looking over the forums, preparing myself for any potential issues while I finish downloading the game. I happened to come across this while looking for problems and their solutions at the Witcher website.

Game crashing or other issues on systems running Windows Vista/7

Tip0: Be sure to install the game as Administrator: right click on SETUP.EXE from the DVD and choose Run as Administrator, also do the same for TWEE_upgrade.exe and for TheWitcherPatch.1.5.exe too
Tip1: Be sure your Windows Vista/7 is up to date: "The Witcher may exhaust virtual address space when running on 32-bit Windows Vista. Microsoft has released a hotfix that addresses this problem. Please download the hotfix from the following location when playing the game on 32-bit Windows Vista: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 . If you have patched your installation of Vista to SP1 or have Windows 7, then you already have this hotfix. KB940105 is already included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f559842a-9c9b-4579-b64a-09146a0ba746&DisplayLang=en " ( 64-bit Vista and all Windows 7 versions do not have this problem )
Tip2: On nVidia hardware and VIsta Ultimate be sure to uninstall the DreamScene application as the it conflicts with the video driver ( read the Release Notes of the video driver )
Tip3: Get TweakUAC and set UAC to QUIET, not Disabled ( do run the application again if you want to restore you previous UAC mode )
Tip4: Set the game to run in Compatibility Mode: right-click on witcher.exe -> properties -> Compatibility -> Windows XP SP2 , also check the 640x480 mode, and the disable decorations, then press Apply and OK
Tip5: Run the game as Admin: right click on witcher.exe and RUN AS Administrator
Tip6: If running the game from an external USB drive be sure to set up the currently used Power Settings Profile so that USB devices are NEVER put to sleep/suspend ( the Performance profile is recommended when gaming anyway )

There is quite a bit of info there pertaining to several of the different issues being reported. Hope it helps us all, because it seems I will be having some issues once this downloads due to the similarity in pc setup.

Thanks for the link Trekdork man what a lot of crud to contend with I am wondering about the part where they say....

"Tip4: Set the game to run in Compatibility Mode: right-click on witcher.exe -> properties -> Compatibility -> Windows XP SP2 , also check the 640x480 mode, and the disable decorations, then press Apply and OK"

Are they saying to play at that resolution?

I was wondering the same thing about the resolution. I got the game downloaded and once I launched the game, I was ending up with a black screen. I tried the few solutions that I found searching thru the forums and nothing worked, so I googled solutions and found one that said to restart steam. I went ahead and restarted my pc and now the game works. I have it set to 1980 X 1020 res and the game looks great. I wish I new what to tell all of you guys who are having probs. I'm not a self proclaimed know it all when it comes to pcs, therefore I don't know of anymore solutions other than updating your video card drivers. I will keep looking for solutions maybe I will find more. Hang in there.

Well I have restarted steam many times since and while it works until the next crash I have mine at my native res of 1920x1200 at the highest settings. I have no stutter or lag or blurring just freezes forcing me to cold boot :(

Want to say it crashes at the lowest res to the highest and all points in between.

I am sure the Skunks at the witcher could afford to have somebody write a patch for this lousy deal.

After all if they only sold a thousand copies @ $5 they make 50K!

I saw this same thing on a different thread, not sure if it was you but... Last time I checked: 1,000 * $5 = $5,000. That is all, other than my copy from steam crashes as well. Other than that, I'm really enjoying the game elements and story.

My copy does crash as well, though its not often thankfully. Seems like a rare thing for it to do really.

Thank goodness for the auto saves and the fact that I do have a habit of saving often. ( I suggest to others who have crash issues, to also save often. )
