View Full Version : Valve, some serious advice from a long time fan.

Valve, I really did play HL1 I swear, and I guess it just wasn't fast paced enough at the time to catch my attention. You fixed that in HL2.
You fixed Key problems of L4D in L4D2, but you still haven't met us in the middle.
Players want to have the ability to more easily modify L4D and its core elements to make more unique settings for the fantastic L4D always survival coop FPS gameplay.
WE ARE %@*$#!*@*$ TIRED OF ZOMBIES.
We want to see L4D, but with dinosaurs, with aliens, with PIRATES AND VIKINGS(no? *hah*). Everyone knows it, and everyone wants it and the only people that can help give that to us is the community at large. But unfortunately that all requires the community to have a more intimate working knowledge of the software and it's programming complexities.
Valve, throw us a bone, we promise we'll increase your sales 100x with the most amazing mods you could ever create.
God bless your souls, may your new year be filled with a sales increase of 10,000%, and ours the simple satisfaction of seeing a 25-30 foot dinosaur fall to the ground in a hale of gunfire.

Your expecting to much. It costs time and money to make source engines. They can't build a heavily upgraded one in a year.

1) Lack of development according to fans, not Valve. They are working on stuff, just not ready to tell us yet. And if youre talking about L4D 1, well youre in the wrong forum.
2) THIS community? You mean the one with the frequently abandoned projects? Yeah thats gonna put heaps of butts on the seats.
3) If you seriously expect Valve to take all this seriously and care if you support them or not.......boy, dream on.
4) Only a small bunch of trolls ask for L4D3, not the community in general, so dont pretend to speak for everyone when noone really agrees with that.
Furthermore, most of what you say sounds plain stupid. Serious advice......fat chance. Why on earth would Valve bother with the full SDK for L4D1 if they are working on L4D3? If that game is considered obsolete NOW, imagine how far under it would be when (hypothetically) L4D3 comes.

I believe the word is that there would be no L4D3 until after HL3 (with the New Source Engine)

So.. you actually believed Valve after what they did with L4D 1? HA... HAHAHA... HAHAHAHAH... Honestly I cant stop laughing! ( This is in reference to several points you made about unkempt promises. )
Lets be honest, L4D2 was more of a heavy patch / DLC, even they admitted that most ( saying most, even though the few things they mentioned that couldn't be done.. could be with some patching.. ) was going to be put into L4D1 in the first place. However they claimed ( like I mentioned ) that not all could be put in and it just grew into a brand new game in itself..
*EDIT*
I am not saying its not a fun game, but I am saying they did something that I would expect a few other companies to do with this title, as they sorta did with the HL2 "episodes" though I think episode 2 was worth it due to it being packaged the way it was and the length of the game.. episode 1 on the other hand...
But all that aside, I would still much rather them finish up and release HL2 Episode 3 over L4D3.. Heck Portal 2 for sure. ( The only thing I did not like about Portal 1, was how short it was.. loved the rest of it. )

ALSO, I never played HL-1, infact, I thought it mostly sucked. HL2 and beyond, great game.
lol, you never played it but it sucked. that is rich, and some very serious advice.
hl 1 wipes the floor with hl 2.true story. ;) its no one's fault you weren't born or sentient enough in late 1998. :p

Good luck on your journey, Mr Kimble.

apparently they don't ignore us too much... lot of ideas from the forums have been put in the game... Now for l4d3 I don't want one right now... I want ep. 3 then maybe l4d3... really I wish they would stop with portal 2 and get ep. 3 out. I've always been more of a hl2 fan then portal.

That's what usually happens when you start working for EA. It's funny how a lot of things started going downhill once they buddied up with EA.

One of the major problems with l4d2 is the inability to auto download a map when joining a game. Not too many people are ever online playing fun mods and custom maps because there is no easy way to get them. You have to exit l4d2, go to a 3rd party site to download it and then restart the game. Every time there is an update server admins must go in and fix up their servers if they are running mods. I've known two people that owned servers and got so frustrated they just threw in the towel. There is no ability to post a map on a server and have people who join auto-download it so they can join in the fun. If people can't just get the map in-game they aren't going to play custom content.

For the 900th time, campaigns are too big to DL in this way. Some campaigns are 600MB or more.
Are you going to wait in the lobby for 30 minutes to a hour for 8 people to DL the thing?
Didn't think so.
It isn't hard to go DL map and install it.
Some of you people would have been absolutely lost in the days before Steam when Counter-Strike had a major update and we all had to go to one of about four 3rd party sites to wait our turn to DL it.

Valve some serious advice from a long time fan.
Actually you achieve the opposite effect, you wont be taken serious when you choose such a pretentious thread title.
WE ARE %@*$#!*@*$ TIRED OF ZOMBIES.
You make a frequent mistake here in SPUF. You are not "we".
When you dont want to play against zombies any more
-> quit playing L4D 2 and play another game
We want to see L4D, but with dinosaurs, with aliens, with PIRATES AND VIKINGS(no? *hah*). Everyone knows it, and everyone wants it and the only people that can help give that to us is the community at large.
Again, you are not "everyone".
I for myself am open for some new zombie models or animals, but not something which you practically need a new game for.
If you want "Pirates and Vikings", go download the source mod. If you want dinosaurs, play "Turok".
Valve, throw us a bone, we promise we'll increase your sales 100x with the most amazing mods you could ever create.
So, you're the CEO of all modders, aren't you?
Once again, you are not "the modders".
Also, the actual situation is not so that there aren't any good customs or only a few good out there.
There are more than a dozen good custom maps out there up to date, which were realized in a polished way.
It's true that some of them get abandoned. Like "no space for zombies" or "open road". The authors have their own different reasons for stopping development. It's not Valve's fault that some campaign projects get abandoned. It's the decision of every single mapper to continue or stop development.

Asking for something that is surely coming, yep it is awesome, like a new DLC or something similar. Whereas the full SDK we were promised one year ago......custom models, infected, survivors, weapons etc, well Valve shut the lid on that and never mentioned it again, meaning they have no intention of making good on their promise. So its pointless to ask for it, because we will never get it.
Personally would I love to have it? Absolutely! WILL I have it? Absolutely not. So why bother asking? Would only set myself up for disappointment.

this, guys think of completely new games for free
with new survivors, new special infected
heck.. it could even be a game like alien swarm, that's sort of a l4d mod.. well all their assets are made from scratch etc.. but same principle
I mean... I had so much hours of fun with HL2 / Episode 2 mods ^^

People used that same argument for wanting fixes in the past. If you ask enough and loud enough, Valve will get off it's duff and then start working. With developers today, they want to cut as many corners as possible to do less work.
That's when we come in and start telling them what to do, it usually has a 90% success rating for many games. Some don't listen then the customers teach them a lesson by not buying any future games from them.
Back in the old days, it was the fans who made or break a company. The number one rule was never too piss off the fans or else you were screwed. Sega is the pefect example with one screw up after another till most of the fans gave up on them.

30 minutes? I download a map in 10 minutes tops on a server that isn't capped at 200kb/sec, and from what I recall, back in the days of lower internet speeds if you joined a game of Unreal Tournament and didn't have the map, skins, sounds, etc. it downloaded it all (sometimes for 10 mins+) so you could join the game-- so your excuse for this missing feature is very weak, and repeating 900 times doesn't make it stronger.
Furthermore, if I want to play with my friends they all have to go download the map outside of the game and we all have to make sure we are running the exact same version or we can't play together. I've seen far older games handle custom content way better then L4d2 does-- including version control of maps where you download just an update for the map if you aren't on the same version the server is running.
Oh, and I've been gaming way before Counter-Strike ever existed, so I hope you have a better excuse than this.

because this is the most relevant thread to Valve at the moment, as a game studio, not online download market place. The interest in their games is waning and if no one in Valve sees that thats because they havent boosted community activity by releasing an SDK for its best new game since HL1,... well, then that blows for everyone.

It's weird how everyone is against modding the game to a persons liking. Games such as CS:S and TF2 allow this very thing, with mario and luigi teams vs bowser and king boo in CS:S. In TF2 I've seen aliens abd predators fighting in different techs.
In L4D 1 & 2, there is not much but some maps and stuff. Then newbs wonder why a lot of players quit.

Okay? Unreal Tournament maps tended to be, at most, 100 MB. That's still 1/5 (Let's low ball some of the campaigns for L4D) of the size of some L4D campaigns.
Additionally, while you may have good, speedy internet, that doesn't mean everyone can download at 200+kb/s. Some people can only pull 50, if that. That's a quarter of your speed. So, take your 10 minutes, and multiply it by 4.... so 40 minutes. Now factor in a large campaign, make it multiplied by 5. Over an hour and a half. The game will be done by the time you download.
Oh, and I've been gaming way before Counter-Strike ever existed, so I hope you have a better excuse than this.
I'm sure your parents are very proud.
