I've played twice, on the one star map and I've failed with at most 10 plans landed. I'm sure I'll get better but I mean its hard to figure out how fast these planes are going to land. Is it just me or do they all have varying speeds? That's really not helping. :(

Indeed they have different speeds. The helicopter is the slowest and biggest plane is the fastest. The others are in between.
As soon as you get used to the different speeds it's just about having an idea of how long the plane will probably need for the route you've drawn.

Just a tip>
You dont have do "approach" the plane to the runway, you can make it come from the otherside of the runway and still land it, forget the animation of the plane landing, imagine theres a hole in the runway start where you must take the plane to.

I can imagine how you feel, at first I also had trouble landing 10 planes on that map, but I've learned quickly and within a few weeks I was able to land more then 500 planes on a map (the one with the windsocket you will unlock after a while). Perhaps this might comfort you. :)
Other tips I might add are: try to draw a straight line towards the runway so it's the quickest route (indeed the direction it lands doesn't matter, it will work once the plane turns white). Also try to avoid having planes cross eachother on their route after you got a feeling of the speed, and keep some of them spinning in circles for a while if you feel you can't handle all of them at that time. It will get easier. ;)
