Try this:
Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Ubisoft\anno1404\config\engine.ini (In Windows Vista this file is located in C:\Users\USERNAME\….)
Create a backup of engine.ini file. Open the engine.ini with a text editor such as Notepad.
Search for the tag <DirectXVersion>. You will find the line
<DirectXVersion>0</DirectXVersion>
Change this line so that it looks like this:
<DirectXVersion>9</DirectXVersion>
You game will now run in DirectX 9 mode. With luck, this might resolve your CTD issue too.
find the game on your hard disk
look for a file called engine
open in notepad
change <DirectXVersion> 0 </ DirectXVersion>
to <DirectXVersion> 9 </ DirectXVersion>
save as engine
for me this was the solution.
Ubisoft thought it was because my processor that the game would not start
, which is not true in any way
I have quad like so many others
