Same problem here, on Windows 7 64 bit, GTX 580. When I tried making a shortcut to the exe from the games folder and running it in compatability mode for XP it starts, only to say I need to have Steam running, so it's not a working solution.
If anyone knows of a way to start the game in compatability mode for Windows XP THROUGH Steam, it might be a solution. Anyone?

Edit - Duh! Yeah it's as simple as setting the compatability setting on the main exe and not the shortcut!
Try it, works for me :)
