I have like 10 rage max, which won't let me do half the stuff for my pet dragon.. I'm still on the first 4 or 5 islands or whatever. Just seems hard to increase it since strength runes are few and far between...

Well as a mage i found myself in the same situation. Look for artifacts that give rage bonus. After sometime even that doesn't help so i ended up equipping Rage Eater (which takes 5 rage and gives 5 mana at the beginning of each combat turn) and stopped using the dragon all together.

I find it way too imbalanced on normal difficuly for the Mage. I used only the right side (most of it) of might tree and the skill which is called dying breath I think.. in which every time a troop enemy or one of yours gives you mana and rage. Also use the red mage his orange cross skill 3per battle gives varying amount of rage.
As Far as max mana its fricking painstakingly difficult to raise as this is my first play through...any mistake in the skill tree is unforgiving.
Ive been thinking to scratch-it altogether and play as warrior (fearing paladin may suffer from some of the same:confused:.
I am playing the original princess game and not Orcs.
Maybe if someone else has any suggestions or has played ORCs the expansion and can sooth or warn of the mage in that game as well.
I have 23 rage and the 30 Lava skill seems a bit out of reach.
I have only successfully upgraded one Armour item as it seems near impossible. too bad such a fun game.

If you are a mage, you're not going to use the higher rage requirement abilities. You just won't have the rage regeneration or the higher rage cap to do so.
As for mana, I recommend trying to raise INT over mana anyways. More powerful spells as a mage are usually better than a max mana pool, especially if you have the right skills (ones that return mana back after a stack dies, magic spring, etc).

mage is pretty tough at the start which is why this game requires thinking about everything you do instead of brainless, oh this skill looks good im goign to get it, tactics. Knowing your max rage when choosing new skills for your dragon is important. If you use a skill a lot during battle, then you upgrade it and can no longer use it, thats your own fault for not paying attention. It should also be obvious that mages use mana over rage so your rage supply is going to be pretty low most of the game.
I played a mage and I'm tearing stuff up now towards the end of the game its almost to easy. The geyser spell pretty much eliminates most troops before they get to you.

after finding geyser and armageddon (if you have the army build for it) game suddenly becomes much easier. However right now i'm level 35 and i still don't have them.
Rage abilities are almost impossible for a mage to use. I've unlocked the last 2 rage skills which require 50 rage to activate and my maximum rage is 46 with 3 rage control skills.

My level 24 no loss mage currently has 65 Rage, and likes some Fiery Phantoms :).
Course I did find gladiator sword and princess shoes...
You really want to use the efficient rage abilities for a mage anyway. Ball lightning, mana accelerator, mystic egg. They won't ever cost THAT much and will be very powerful in fights. Dragon dive is more your thing than Fiery Phantoms anyway. (Damage + control)

1. As a Mage I always take the rage skills from the warrior skill tree.
2. Items are the key to have more rage ...

In short this is it. The only 'might' skills a mage needs is the three on the far right, Rage, Dragon Training, and Rage generation. If you want to get fancy, you could also try onslaught for a bit more rage, but it isn't as efficient.
My rough rage breakdown.
Princess shoes (15) and Gladiator sword (15). Crown of Chaos for 5 more. +24 from Rage skill. +6 from voice of the Dragon +8 from Absolute Balance (will be 12). 10 Base, 7 from quests I think. That gives me about 90 Rage at level 43, which is enough to potentially cast any Dragon Ability, though not every turn.
Now, that uses one or two great items, but I didn't complete any item sets for more rage either. So it is all within the bounds of possibility. Just realize that getting rage from the warrior tree is number 1 priority for a mage. +2 attack is no where NEAR as effective as 8 rage.

or if ur lucky enough, get a skull pf pain, and after it reaches 0% it wont eat up ur mana, but still give u more rage inflow, perfect for mid game, later on in the game u might wanna upgrade it for a stats boost, also in late game Ive found u are better off with those nice skills in the left side of the might tree, such as onslaught and heroism. Those are more important to max than anger, and dragon training(I like to put 1 point in both of those as a mage, but not more than that).
