View Full Version : This is not your typical MMO - it's AWESOME.

I fully downloaded and patched the game yesterday (past midnight - the patching was 9-10GB big). I just want to add a few notes here, that might be critical to someone, that is thinking of buying the game.

First of all: For GERMAN players, the game (text) is in German and the ingame videos I have seen so far, are in German, too.

Graphics:

Awesome. It looks much, much better than CoH or Champions Online and it runs MUCH better. I couldn't run Champions Online above low/medium settings, without the framerate dropping a lot. DCUO runs just fine on normal to high settings, with Vsync enabled and 1080p resolution. I would estimate, I haven't checked with a fraps yet, that the framerate is somewhere in the 30 fps line. Never under it.

I am running on a laptop: i7 740QM, 4GB DDR 3 RAM, 280M GTX 1gb VRAM, Windows 7 64bit and 640GB HDD space.

This game starts off with action and it continues with action. Nothing boring around here.

Controls:

Do yourself a favour and buy a XBOX 360 controller (the original one from Microsoft). I am using the wireless version of it, but I have also tested it with the wired version. The pad is recognized right away - there are NO adjustments to be made. It works with DCUO right out-of-the-box. All keys and buttons are mapped and ready to rock.

Other than that: This does NOT feel like your typical MMO, where you hit, wait, hit, wait, try to jump around and make it feel somewhat awesome, hit, wait...and so on.

You can block, fly, superspeed run, grab stuff and throw it at your enemies face, do superpower attacks by just pressing a button and so on. It feels and is much more fun.

I LOVE THE FLYING!!! FINALLY, someone got this right. I always had to puke, when I saw superhero flying in other games.

Story: No way. Check it out yourself. I won't spoil anyone. The cutscenes make me wanna burst.

Sound: Great. The voices, that are available in different languages, are AWESOME. I am used to having crappy German voice actors and I very much prefer the original voice actors, over the ones synched for each language. In this case though, since it's so good, I can recommend playing in German, because they did this crap RIGHT. All charakters feel and hear right on spot with their original.

I don't want to spoil anyone, but...

right when you get to the city and see those sunglares the first time, look at that city in the distance and the water in front of you...then the awesome music starts playing with that moment...LOVE IT. It's a calm and relaxing music. Feels like a part of a movie sometimes.

Problems so far:

LAG. The game was almost unplayable yesterday. I guess the load is pritty heavy right now. It will settle down, but yesterday, I got disconnected several times and I had lag and slow reactiontime (going from 3-4 secs to 10-20 secs LAG).

Other than that: Everything else looks very, very polished. I remember how many MMOs I have played, that were buggy like crap at launch. Other than a few clipping things, there is nothing else to cry about (so far).

As of right now, I will play a bit more, as soon as I get home today (I can't WAIT!!!!), I would say this is a direct hit. I played FF14 in beta and knew, just after one day, that it was going to fail very, very hard. I played this one day, so far, and it would SEEM to be something very, very, very good. Right on spot with what I was hoping for it to be. Actually, I didn't even hype myself TOO much this time, since I was preparing myself for it to fail (since so many games have lately).

Just wanted to get that out of my system.

I felt the same way when I started reading about chracter design from the start. It seemed limited in costume choices and powers.

But then I started playing and found how I could customize my powers. And how at level 10 or 12 I think I was able to bick up another weapon type. So I could be a Hand Blaster with a Staff.

And then all the costume choices that popup while equipping items that aren't offered during creation are really cool.

My toon looks completely different than he did when created.

And the combat is engaging and fun!

I truely feel like a Super Hero here.

And I can't stop playing. My boys have fallen in love with it and I find myself fighting the urge to be greedy and kick them off of it.

So far I have had zero crashes and no lag. Granted my system was built as a gaming system and I have 10meg ethernet to the outside.

But I can play it maxed out in settings with no lost of frames in battles.

As for controls I cannot handle controllers.
So I have always used the Logitech G13 for my games.
I have become accustomed to the left handed controller and a mouse.

I always excel in damage in groups. :D

I have to fully agree with the OP, except for the lag part, not sure what you were getting but i have yet to be disconnected from the game and been playing hardcore since release lol. I love this game, this mmo was made for me like i tell my friends. Truth is before this game released i talked so much crap about it as to how similar it looks to CO or CoH/V and how it would end up being the usual garbage. But man i was wrong , this game passed all my expectations and keeps getting better and better. So for anyone wanting to check this out do not hesitate, and definitely join with some friends on a pvp server for the most fun experience. =)

How do you find the G13 with DCUO?

How do you find the G13 with DCUO?

I love it. I use it for all my games, especially MMOs.
I have always been use to using the left hand controllers since Belkin started making them.

My kids can't stand it, but they are also controller freaks.

So if you love controllers get the 360 or wait til they fix the PS3 controller issues.

But if you can't use controllers effecitvely like me.
Then I would definetly look at something like the G13.

It is extremely customizable, even on the fly.
I have been in combat in groups and found myself during a moment of reprive changing the loadout just using the memory button on the unit itself to change a quick key layout.

It is extremely comfortable and HUGE!. Tons of room to rest your hand on.

I have found I can fly effectively with the left thumb stick. That does take some getting use to if you never controlled a game that way.

But once you do it's like being ambidexterious with the mouse added in.

I keep tab and jump on my razor mouse extra buttons.

Then I have all my attacks in one row of the buttons. All my defenses in the next row.

And then all my common buttons like inventory and the rest on the two remaining rows.

I only have to goto the KB when I need to chat with someone.

Interesting... Yeah i can imagine it working like a charm... but then the idea of switching to the keyboard to chat (a minor issue i know) kinda kills it for me... May aswell use my controller...
I LOVED the ps3 controls (played ps3 beta) but the lack of communication killed it for me... so here i am on the pc version :P

Still ingame guys ^,^

I use the mouse and keyboard for most stuff, too. In this case though, I prefer to use the 360 controller. Flying or even just walking slow is so much easier with it. Since DCUO interface and action-based combat makes it easy to play with both styles.

That is something FF14 couldn't achieve.

I just got some PvP action. Okay, I got my a$$ kicked right out of the air, but it was a bunch of fun! THIS is how combat should be. Some guys even ganged up on me. I bashed one down to the ground, out of the air, but the second one just kicked me down, too. Didn't see him coming at me there.

It's just SO much fun.

For me itīs a bad console port which wont interested me more then2 weeks. They had a long beta where many have tried and seen itīs not their game, so here at launch there are much more fans within the Forums then people who donīt like. When i see europe server population on the other hand, they have less then 1/3 of the people Aion had at launch for example. Watch a few videos before you buy, read the OffForum probs about chat and Consolebahaviour, even if many fans try to sell you bugs as features (i.e. hey the chat is crap, theres no /1 /2, no overall, no trade - answer: ah chat is crap within all mmoīs , this way is better)

It does feel like an obvious port sadly and I hope we dont see many more of these console-PC port MMOs, they kinda screw up the interface and chat for a genere that to be quite frank is well in the territory of PC gamers.

What's the deal with loot in this game? Lots of stuff to pick up or just costume things?

And hows the PvE grouped content if anyone's done that yet

Insomnia80

you always get better gear (white, green, blue, purple, orange, the usual), you get all skins you had ever found, from them you can choose which skin you prefer for which part of the clothes. You have three colours for each part, the colours are also free chooseable, but where they appear you canīt change. you an change Itemskins and colours at any time in the game.

PvE i tried a few times, you have a browser where you can choose which instance, you can choose which job you will make. In you have objectives before the bosses appear, the groups are random - but i have also been on a group with 4 DDs and no Tank no heal, much dieing till the boss was down.. take a look at a youtubevid if you want to see the instances from inside

Just wanted to confirm as someone who closed beta tested this game, it's a great game with a lot of potential. That said, for those who are on the fence, it might pay to wait a few months for the price to come down and updates to come out. Like most MMOs at launch, it's a bit lacking in content, but the groundwork is there-- this game could be better than City of Heroes with a little improvement, and in my opinion, is already better than Champions Online.

Plus, you can do missions with Superman and Batman!

Do the voices fit the characters? i.e. no Batman who sounds like a pre-pubescent teenager?

Nope, the voices sound just right and awesome. Batmans voice reminds me of Sam Fishers (Splinter Cell)GERMAN voice actor. I might be wrong, but I even think it's the same person (don't quote me on that, though). It's not just the videos and text, that are in German. This game has a TON of voice acting, videos and ingame scenes. It's all in available in a bunch of languages.

---------
-------------------

While I'm at it. I really think this is a good launch. I mean, remember, it could have been another FF14. There is not ONE game, that I have played (MMO), that has been perfect on release (I have been through like a million....or just a few hundred).

Also, the big piece of voice acting is just awesome. When I am in bed at night, why the f*** would I want to read long things, if I can just listen to them, with my bluetooth wireless headset? It's just awesome, that besides Funcom with Age of Conan (which is pritty awesome, but too buggy still), someone has actually done this.

I did my first 8 vs 8 instance (/PVP) in australia (not that I actually cared WHERE it was ^^). It was AWESOME. I LOVE the fact, that we all have different superpowers. I start flying off in my turbo mode (for ppl who chose to fly, instead of running: it gets MUCH faster, don't worry ;D) and then suddenly, without even thinking of it, I see this dude running under me at (btw, awesome to actually have it from start, instead of playing for DAYS to get that ♥♥♥♥, honestly, WHY CoH/CO?!) super speed with his lightning bolts and all. I was like: "WHAT THE HELL!?" and flew right in to a building. Nevermind that, though :P

The awesome thing about the armor and stuff: You CAN chose to equip yourself with more powerful stuff, that CAN change the appearance of your char, IF you want. You don't HAVE too, it's not a MUST. I locked my original appearance, because I like it that way, but there sure is a BUNCH of new stuff to be tried out.

Speaking about the bad console port thing: FF14 is a desaster and THAT is a BAD console port. This would be a good one, if you really comepare the two (I mean, in FF14 they even tried to SELL you their special FF14 gamepad, so you can just play the game, without dieing at trying to control things - slow, sluggish, laggy, aweful looking...I puked after three days). Sure, the interface could be more PC like in the PC version of DCUO, but it sure is usable this way. I wouldn't mind either way, since I am playing with a game pad, but I do think they should give you the option to choose your interface or it should adapt to the way you play (mouse keyboard interface style vs gamepad style for example).

Other than that, I really wish this game the BEST. I will be putting a few reviews online soon (I wanna hit lvl 20-30 first). Usually I don't even mind, but this game is just too awesome. One of those FEW, FEW, FEW, FEW games, that actually try and DO things different, instead of copying the UO,EQ1/2, WoW, DAoC, LA1/2 (and so on..you name it!) style of MMO. I HATE that and I swear, if I have to play one of those EVER again, I will BURST in to fire and lightning will shine from the sky, creating an energy ball with the power to destroy an entire planet...................filled with ants and therefor with the size of a small fishbowl.

Anyway...ENJOY guys. If anyone wants to team up: PM me.

I convinced a few friends to try this game out, since they didn't know if they could trust it. Sony, if you read this: GIVE OUT SOME BUDDY KEYS OR TRIAL KEYS! I assured my buddy, that, IF this game is no fun, within the first 48h hours, I would pay him the game, if he stops playing or if he doesn't have fun after that.

We'll see how it goes.

ROCK IT.

PS: About PvP or PvE. It's like having to chose between an orange and an apple. BUT for ME it's PvP. I just love the possible threat ...even if I get my a$$ kicked. THAT is why stuff like REVENGE exists. This game just SCREAMS for WAR and WARZONES ^,^ <- I love flying to save someone in need of help, screaming like a little girl and trying to run away. Yeah, I sure am awesome AND cheap. One save = 9,99 Euros for my assistance - no tax. You can pay me via credit card or just (if female) show me some LOVE.

PEACE.

I just want to add the fact that the appearance from old items are forever available to you once you have equipped the item. All costume pieces work like a collectors game so you only carry the most powerful items in the inventory but can still put on that mask that you loved at Level 1 and keep the stats from the über helmet :D

People that like exploring will find that they have small, green markers hidden in the mission areas so explorers like me have a reason to climb all over the place ;) Movement is fun like others have mentioned, I have the speed running thing and is usually found speeding over rooftops and jumping between buildings :) Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

PvP servers are definitely battle zones from the start. You have to keep an eye after high level characters but even low levels will appear all over the place. They killed me, I killed them... but I am surprised that I actually enjoyed hunting them down and go into a fight. A few levels are not much of a difference if you take care how you attack and enough n00bs can even become a threat for high level characters ;) Today was the first time I joined a noob army to chase away a high level character from out mission zone :D So much fun (died but was so worth it)

I am on the EU servers playing as a hero. You find me running around a little bit all over the place but Gotham is my favorite. I was surprised at the number of active gankers this morning around 3-5 in the night but it really gave me some training and I could not believe the block can be that powerful!!! My level 10 (staff & ice) has held his ground against several high level characters by now and more then a few ended up dying. I have never seen a MMO before that reward skill and strategy so much. Take care of blocking and you will survive long enough to slowly beat him up :)

And then all the costume choices that popup while equipping items that aren't offered during creation are really cool.

I wasn't really putting much stock in DC, but this has gotten my interest. My main gripe with CO was the loot... it was rubbish, disgraceful. The only things worth playing to earn were the ones that granted costume pieces, and even then they were quite poor. If the loot here has a proper effect on how I can apear, then it sounds right up my street.

Unfortunatly, despite how well exicuted the game sounds, the DC superheros and villians don't actually apeal to me very much. I like the whole superhero thing, but some of these guys are just quite dull. Superman? Blech. There needs to be something nasty, dark in there to make it worth paying attention to. If there's anything like The Boys in there, that'd be good. You know, corrupt heroes, unforgivable crimes, and the like. Traditional hero-ing is just a bit too cheesy.

PM me with you nick. We can play along a bit. Two friends of mine have already joined the battle and are thrilled ^^ We sure need some good heroes around, the villains are very tricky and jump you where they can (not that I have any money on me to steel - no pockets).

I hear ya, blocking is very effectiv. And while doing that, roll around and away. I just gained new powers, like bursting from the ground up very high into the air (when my special-power-bar thingy is full), to get away fast, if I want to chicken out (not that I have done that...).

That's what I wold someone yesterday, that was getting pissed at dieing and all, being ganked from villains. It's like in the real world, surive it or not, learn from it or not, do something against it or not. After showing him the ways of the dark side (ehm...I mean good side), he destroyed them all! Mwuahaa...

You know, you've got a point there, somewhere. I would really, REALLY welcome a new sort of villain, like: GENERAL ZOD and his gang. Honestly, THAT would be kinda awesome. I never see this guy in battles or games related to superman.

KNEEL b4 ZOD.

PS: But to be honest, I do think they will add more of the stuff you are wanting. See the stuff, that they have right now, as the building ground for what is to come. We all know, mmos (the ones that survive) get better with time, since more stuff is added to them, as time goes by.

Does anyone have an extra buddy key? I would really like to try the game out before buying it. Thanks :D
