View Full Version : On sale - worth it? Multiplayer still active?

Hi!
So for 5 Euro, this game seems like a good deal, right? I am contemplating whether to pick this up or not. As for the TAGES DRM, well I guess I would just have to live with it. All it does it prevent the game from being installed more than three times a month and I can live with that. I know that the DRM also nists in my system somewhere, which sucks, but what can I do?
Aside from that, does anybody know if the multiplayer mode gets played, at least sometimes?
Thank you in advance,
-pac

I'm not sure about the multiplayer, never played it, but the single player alone is worth $5. It is two amazing games, but I'll warn you, there is one bad thing: if you like the movies do NOT try to figure out how Dark Athena connects to Pitch Black. You won't sleep.

Riddick is an awesome game, this is a steal at 5$/eur, even for the original game only.

Jeez, everybody needs to shut up about DRM already. If you need to activate more than once or twice, you're doing something wrong.

Really, but people will even complain if you only get 15 installs... I've only installed it twice since I had to reformat, and it isn't like HDD space is expensive.

We shouldn't have to activate it AT ALL. It's on Steam for goodness sake, which has its own activation system.
And besides the game is cheap and is fairly old, so why hasn't the DRM been patched out by now?

It's better than it was. After the 3 before you had to e-mail them to get activations back. I can handle the 30 day reset, Arkham Asylum has the same rule.

Ahh, another person who doesn't understand anything about game development/steam apparently. TAGES is built into the game, while Steam is a distribution system. Why the hell would they waste the time and money to make a game, then make a completely different version of it without TAGES for a certain form of distribution? Honestly, they probably don't care. Why did I have to install Steam when I bought HL2 retail? Because HL2 required Steam. TAGES, GFWL, and all that other DRM works the same way...

How can you even ask? This one is one of the best singleplayer experiences you can have. It includes also Escape from Butcher Bay, the previous Game. It is really worth the 5 bucks.

A little spoiler, but not too big. But it shows the enormous atmosphere of the Game.

Ahh, another person who doesn't understand anything about game development/steam apparently.
You are aware that just about every single game on Steam - with the exception of some dosbox stuff - is bound to Steam's DRM and will not run without, no matter if it uses additional DRM or not, aren't you?
So in this case, they are not using Tages instead of Steam but you're getting two different DRM-systems for the price of one.
So you actually have two points of failure instead of one that may prevent you from activating or playing a game you bought.
While Tages is fairly harmless and automatically regained activation limits aren't the worst form of DRM, it's about as easy to remove Tages from the game as it is to add Steam's DRM to it. It's not like that costs more for the distributor or developer than they spend on donuts and coffee each day.
But, you're right, they don't care - why should they.
But I don't think you understand Steam or why people don't like having two forms of DRM on their games.

I think you are the one who doesn't understand how this works.
It is quite simple to remove TAGES from the game (GFWL would not so easy but thats another storie). They could do that. They could complete remove it and even shut down the auth server (that they will do at some point anyway) after that saving money.
Steam is a not only a distribution platform. It also takes care that you do not screw around with the game, takes care of you save games, prevents cheating, gives you a platform for archivements and lets people communicate. If you let it.
But as most companies apparently just want to make a quick buck by releasing their games on multiple online platforms or just getting a quick buck from a old game they still had on their shelf without any risks of losing money by pressing CDs nobody buys we get poorly ported games on steam.
I really would like to buy this game but I will not do it as long as additional DRM is applied. I made this error with Batman and Red Faction Guerilla. Hell, even in the "good" age there was a ♥♥♥♥ed up "TAGED" Mafia 1 which I could not install on my system because "Tages found a DVD-burner in your system! So you pirated this game and cannot install it! Remove the DVD-Burner and try again!". "Sorry but my only DVD drive is a DVD-Burner and its just great that I cannot install my just bought game on my just bought rig because of this no scents. So ♥♥♥♥ off you stupid DRM crap!!"
I have been burnt multiple times, I will not be burned again.
[EDIT]
@freiboot
sorry, did not see your post.
I think you hit the point much better as I could!

Well, for the current sale price of 5 bucks, I think I'll give it a chance.
I liked the movies, and I like a game with a good single player story and playability to it and it looks like it should have that. I'm not too worried about the multiplayer aspect as I don't do a lot of multiplayer gaming anyways, but if it has it and is still active then it's a bonus.
I'm not crazy about the DRM scheme (and the DRM currently on this game doesn't seem as bad as some other DRMs out there), but, I don't think I'll be installing multiple times per month anyways.
If the game turns out that it sucks, well, I guess I'm not out too much as I'm getting it on the discounted sale price. But from the trailers, screenies and info I've seen of it so far, it looks like it should be an enjoyable game.

Did you watch my Youtube Link? It is really awesome.. alone the original voiceovers are awesome and it has a commentary mode after you complete it. It had it btw before valve had one :D. This game (Butcher Bay which is included) was its time plenty ahead at time of relase.

I loved the movies, and checked out the game trailer out when I just noticed it was on sale a few minutes ago. I wouldn't spend $1.99, on it. To be honest, the graphics in my opinion look horrible... that chick, who I'm guessing is his arch nemesis in the game or what ever, she looks really messed up. The eyes look messed up and the arms look like sticks. No thanks. For a game made only a few years ago, the graphics look way out of whack. They probably just wanted to rush out a game to make money off the movie title, and I also avoid games with DRM. It doesn't do anything to stop pirates, it only hurts the customers.

Ok, I really do not want to be an ♥♥♥. But the graphics of this game look absolutely astonishing. What you just wrote, General Hoohah doesn't make any sense in my eyes.

Here is the thing about this game - your video settings can really screw it up. I LOVED IT. I've played it through twice. But only after I found a web site that explained how nVidia's default settings murder the frame rate. After I adjusted that, it looked stunning and ran like a blade.

agreed, that's the only thing i didn't like. actually, it would have made more sense if DA was a prequel to Butcher Bay, because BB connects to Pitch Black almost perfectly

Absolutely worth it. I paid 7e for it last time it went on sale, and I got a LOT of bang for my buck ;)

PEOPLE NEED TO READ THE OTHER THREADS! There are like 10 other threads explaining how the DRM works, a a few other threads saying that the multipler portion of this game is dead, and it's dead because it sucked.
This is two single player games, and the DRM is not bad.

Yes, they added higher resolution textures. The original Butcher Bay was SD, now they made it HD.
