View Full Version : Why is COD2 so expensive on steam?

Hi all,
I have been playing cod2 for ages, I think it's the best in the series.
I would love for steam to track my hours, and be able to use the steam overlay (I can't atm because punkbuster kicks me, and you cant turn off overlay for non steam games). However, I noticed that cod2 is still £15??? It's £5 brand new retail. Why is it so expensive on steam still? It's 5 years old... and surely steam should be cheaper, since they dont have to post us the CD.
I think this is a total rip off and steam need to look at the pricing of cod2.
Does anyone else agree?
Regards,
Jack.

Total rip off? Considering it's STILL the best CoD to date? Go away please.

Did I say it wasn't the best COD? I'm saying that it's £5 retail, but £15 on steam. Does that seem logical to you? Shouldn't it be cheaper since they don't have to pay to rent a shop, don't have to pay for staff to work the shop, delivery costs, and so on?
Maybe you don't think about these things, and just blindly pay anything for "the best cod" (which I agree with), but I think it's a bit unfair to charge MORE than retail, when it should be the other way around.

I'm thinking it's probably up to Activision to allow Steam to sell it for less. I don't know how Steam does pricing, but I'm assuming the publisher has the final say on what the prices Steam can sell for.

Because Call of Duty series are awesome all time. Activision isn't so greedy. You silly, kids. |D

Look at any Call of duty game, its the same story every time. Retail stores bought the games in and can sell them for whatever price they want since activision already have their money. Steam on the other hand have the prices decided directly by the publishers and don't own the games they sell on so have little hand in it. Look at half life 2 episode 2, ♥♥♥♥loads cheaper and the same age as cod 4

Yeah true. I've had a cracked copy for years, but decided to buy it legit on steam. I could have bought it retail, but I prefer having all my games on steam. I was just a bit bummed about the price :p

If you are from america est and want to play some good old S&D stock, don't buy it though...
I reinstalled it a week ago and this game's the most MODED game ever... Can't find a stock or rifle only S&D server with lower then 130 of pings. Every server have mod on them. You can run, you can select 2 guns, there's red dot when you aim, etc...
The only good serve I've fond is a CTF that I don't like very much, and it's also moded... If you look for those kind of game then you should buy it, it's totally worth it for sure but if you are the kind of guy like me who wanna play the game STOCK like it was when it was competitive and good, then forget it.
I'll uninstall soon just cause of that :(

Well I live in Europe, and there're hundreds of servers here. The majority of them are stock, but some have minor mods, like advertisements or messages. Same as any COD server, or any game for that matter though, in my experience.
You could always rent your own server ;)

Its a dying game unfortunately :( It sounds as you might have stumbled across our clans ctf server which is still pretty lively but theres not many servers left with regular players and as you say most of them are modded heavily.
The price of the game on steam isn't helping either. I have to agree with the OP. As it happens this very moring I was trying to add my retail copy of cod uo and cod 2 onto steam and its not possible which also doesnt help.
OK so it's not valves fault and the mighty activision simply want everyone to play their new title, but it surely wouldnt hurt to make steam back catalogue titles competitively priced and be able to add retail titles.

Yeah, CoD 2 came out in 2005, the same year as Battlefield 2.
MW1 came out in 2007, though.

Why not go to the next store and buy it there?
In GER it costs only 10€. Another advantage is, that you won't
get the CD-Key issues when you buy a disc instead of buying at steam.

It's better just to buy the cod warchest, its like 50% cheaper than buying all 3 original cod's at full price. so that would be 10$ each.

I own retail versions of CoD 2, CoD 4 and CoD WaW, beceause there has been some Punkbuster kicks especially at Win 7 users. When these games were released to the market, Win 7 didn't exist officially and Steam version causes silly kicks from servers with PB. I guess there is an issue with Steam overlay. So, I recommend buying CoD 2 at a retail store not on Steam..

there's no issue with the game, and punk buster doesn't kick you anymore. it's only cod 4 and cod waw that have this problem. besides its evenbalances fault for being so damned lazy.

No, it's Activision's fault for only paying for a limited amount of time with anti-cheat support.
They WANT the game to die, but only after a certain period of time. If the game lasts a long time, they make less money on sequels that come out every year and use the same engine and maps and weapons.

Its a rip off somehow, a big electronics market here in germany sells the original retail box for just 10€.

I remember getting it on sale with the COD bundle. It is a steep price for such an old game regardless how good it is. It is good, though. The single-player is up there with Half Life and BioShock imo.

yes, but if you buy the bundle, the base price for each cod game is 10$. If you want to search, there's activision 25% off coupons you can use on the pack if you can trade for them.
