I finished some seemingly climactic boss battles and a few cutscenes and eventually was put back in control of my character after talking to Augustus. Is this the start of Flames of Vengeance? I could start a new FoV game to check, but I don't want to spoil part of the story if I'm not there yet.

Yes, that's the start of FoV.

Thanks. Speaking of mindreading, the XP costs skyrocketed for me at this point. The highest I had previously seen was around 3K, and now they're all 5K or 10K. Is that normal?

Yep. That's why I think it's handy to max out the mindreading skill!

Max mindreading skills as in FoV u get plenty of skill books from quests and mindreading.

Your xp is skyrocketing, too. A single enemy critter can give you 3000 xp!

I made the mistake of not maxing Mindreading and mindreading everyone.

After a while, my XP debt was around 300k.

If you don't want to waste skill points, you can also equip mindreading items temporarily. You should be able to get an extra +5 or +6. I use mindreading items when walking around unhostile areas and change to other equipment when fighting. Obviously the tradeoff is having to switch back and forth.
