I hate to admit it, but I think this game has more umph than DAO and Oblivion. I was never really glued to the screen on either one of those, but I can't put this one down. And there's so much game play. When I got to the dragon tower, the "game-over" timer in my head was starting to go off. But this one just keeps going. Big time.
Very awesome. And that's only Ego Draconis. Just to think I still have to finish it then play Flames of Vengeance too! And I picked it up on sale on top of everything else. Unbelievable.
I almost put it down too. The first fifteen minutes made me think it was a kids game by the dialog. I'm glad I didn't make that mistake. Whew.

Yeah I thought the same thing. Glad I stuck with it though. It can be tough as nails at times but once you learn how to use everything properly it's a lot fun.

There was one aspect I didn't enjoy very much about Divinity II. I felt I did a fairly thorough work-through of Ego Draconis but my character was significantly weaker than a fresh-made character in Flames of Vengeance.
That kind of made me mad because I really enjoy building my characters up. I ended up just trashing my Ego Draconis character because there wasn't much of a comparison.
I got over it pretty easily though, heh heh. Being able to crank up mind-reading so it's 100% off created a whole new aspect I only used conservatively in Ego Draconis. And cranking up the wisdom bonus so you can get an extra 25% experience on everything. My new character is flying up in experience.
I also love the British feel to this game. Very nice.

Definitely more oompf than D:OA, but that's not saying much. As good as Oblivion? In my opinion it's not quite on the same level as Oblivion, but close.
I was very surprised by this game too - it's much better than I expected.
OP, what part of the beginning dialog seemed childish? It's been a while so I don't really remember it.

Agreed with OP.
vs DAO
Easily better then DAO since that game doesn't know if it wants to be an action or strategic team based rpg. (DA2 I see has finally answered that question for the series, it will be an action group based RPG). DAO is not really good at either style of play, which imo really throws game play off and to me that is first and foremost.
But it also has another critical flaw with me... Small maps and load after load after load. DA/Oblivion both have huge worlds (same engine used) that load infrequently, you get into the world and it's surroundings, you can picture the world entirely in your head, at any point (even now) remember the walk from town to town, the bends, the landmarks, that is super cool and something DA's engine cannot give you.
DA is a series of cookie-cutted maps non-symmetrically put together, keeps me disjointed and never gives the player a solid picture of the world in full, zero sense of adventure. If I'm hunting for something and it's on the map, it's insultingly simple to find since there is so little area to venture in, and usually a linear path. Just terrible.
Oh, and on top of that the small maps, DA is littered with invisible walls, which the other 2 games do not have! And sure I'll continue to pick on DA... Even for their little maps their load times are significantly longer then Oblivion/D2. How can this be? 300 square yards vs several square miles in a less detailed worlds (DA), how can DA takes so long to load?
I do want to give a shout out to Gothic 1-2 only 3 loads the entire way and no loading when entering a building. The building seems perhaps trivial, but it is super cool and totally immersive not even having those quick little loads.
DA is NWN at its core. I can't believe Bioware can continue to get away with that engine and on top of that, wants to still use it. You would think a company with their kind of jack, would make a wonderful huge open world engine for us to really lose ourselves in. They have been slacking on their engine imo for near a decade. NWN & KOTOR ok. ME and DA, please update us Bioware with the next great RPG engine already. I really am surprised that the general consensus of RPG players have been ok with this.
vs Oblivion
I like it better then Oblivion because the story is so much better told and the combat model is superior. Both games use the same engine, but Divinity's 2 version is much more stable however a little more demanding on FPS. D2's dungeon variety blows Oblivion away. What makes Oblivion what it is, is the editor/mods. But for just installing the game and playing a wonderful adventure with no add-on's imo it was simple, D2 is simply a better polished experience.
The games that are closest to D2 is Gothic 1-2 NOR and Witcher and I still think overall it has both of those beat, but close, each totally excellent.

Probably depends on build of character. There are some points as you say you have to watch yourself in the FF's. Make sure your abomination pal is strong. I liked it as the difficulty in these were sometimes very challenging and other times a breeze. Since they are plentiful it was nice that it wasn't nip/tuck for me the entire way.

I would think pure mage or ranger would be easiest class but i'm not sure coz i haven't played but i'm melee player in the heart so i guess i'll have to endure.
I agree with everything said here, this game is a rare gem.
Divinity 2 exhibits a certain amount of charm and style I thought was lost with modern day gaming.

What you says is prety much true cept not in a generalized sense, most but not all of the big developers and publishers are like that but allot of indie and smaller devs and publishers still produce decent games, and this one is one of those. Small company (compared to the behemoths) that has not yet gone corporate and be run by beancounters.

Even though i find this game very frustrating time to time i can still imagine playing this many, many times more. Thread says it all: amazed which is what happened to me. This game was just a random buy and i didn't have too much expectations and when i played to halfway and getting own tower which would make Overlord very jealous i was blown away.
