View Full Version : -10% "sale"

Anyone notice this game has been on "sale" for months upon months upon months, now? It's obvious that this pathetically small discount is just to keep it on the "specials" list as long as possible. Kinda dishonest, don't you think?

-10% on Steam is a joke. That shouldn't even be listed as a "special", let alone for over 3 months.

Oh, I don't deny that it's brilliant marketing. Just like selling $100 "premium" HDMI cables at Best Buy. That doesn't make it any less dishonest, though.

That's the standard Valve pricing for their own games pre-orders. Is 10% a joke when Valve does it? Is it dishonest that you can get Portal 2 for 10% off on EB's website months before release?

MeatyLlamaStick
01-20-2011, 08:22 PM
Portal 2 isn't been on the sale/deals listing. It's not the actual discount (I have no interest in the game) but that 10% seemingly qualifies it to be on the "specials" list for all eternity. Gets annoying when you check the list upon login and notice the same non-deal there for so long.

The specials list thing is automatic and just shows any game that has a discount, get over it.

Are you the guy who was raging a month or to ago when there where some DLC for the Train Simulation game on sale for $0.20 off for a few weeks?

Umm.. no. Although I would question the sanity of anyone who actually owns all that railworks crap. It's probably just one incredibly rich guy who keeps it in business.

Have you paid the $500+ for the whole thing? And besides, it's another topic. Railworks hasn't been on fake-sale for half a year.

The thing is...it IS a special.

10% off of $49.99 puts the price at $44.99, which is $5 off.

In an age when more and more big-box publishers are putting their opening sticker price at $59.99 and expecting people to shell out $20-30 in DLC not long after release, what kind of stick do you have how far up what part of your anatomy that you are upset that you can get a brand new game with extras for $44.99??

Obvious troll is obvious.

Oh well. Then, according to the OP, the "honest" way would be to charge US$60 for the game, just like the new ones coming from EA.

Dude. Stop trolling. Please.

It's a pre-order bonus. If you have a beef with it, take it up with Valve. How exactly is this Projekt Red's fault?

Have you paid the $500+ for the whole thing? And besides, it's another topic. Railworks hasn't been on fake-sale for half a year.

You know, I only own the basic Railworks 2, but the guys on that forum put a lot of time into trying to explain that, despite the $200 sale that included the whole package, the DLC isn't intended to be part of a complete game.

They are supposed to be true add-ons, with each DLC aimed at a different group of people. You don't have to, or are expected to, own all of them, or even any of them. :p

As for being 10% off Steam, well, everybody, not just Steam, has The Witcher 2 on pre-order sale, and yes, it's an effective way to keep it on a sale list, but I don't think it really matters. People on Steam are accustomed to far greater sales, so few people are really enticed by 10% off, especially when everybody else has it 10% off as well.

Of course, I'm getting my copy from GOG. It's even cheaper since I'll get a free game thrown in, and most importantly, it's DRM-free. So yeah, I can just ignore it since I pretty much already have it, just like I can ignore sales on games I have no interest in, or other games that I already own.

Maybe the game is worth $45 for some people, especially those with Steam loyalty who want it on their list and the fact that it might have achievements. There are likely even some people who are ignorant to the fact that there are alternative outlets, or don't believe that these alternatives are trustworthy, or that they may be inferior.

Perhaps they simply don't want to divide their game libraries between different services, which can be understandable, but is ultimately a bad idea as you are unable to benefit from the greatest sale price, almost all games on Steam require you to be logged into the client to run, and if you're loyal to one service, well, we all know the dangers a lack of competition can bring.

Personally, I'd pay $50 to have it DRM-free, and I'd much rather be able to own it forever, future-proof, without any form of protection, than have Steam log achievements, playtime, and let people know that I own it on Steam, as well as automatic patching. The patching might be nice, but I don't care about that other stuff. Plus, the free game I get has at least a $6 value, so I'm getting it for $40 or less. I think getting it from anywhere else is a bum-deal, to be honest.

Plus, you can play anything, even on Steam, while it downloads. ;)

Really? Steam always stops my downloads when I launch a game, and if you try to alt-tab back to Steam and click resume, it just ignores it. Actually, it ignores the resume button almost all the time, and sometimes Steam just chooses to randomly pause a download or update, and it won't resume no matter what you try until you restart the client.

Point is, there's a 100% chance of you being able to play games and download at the same time if you get it from elsewhere. That wasn't so much a real incentive as it was a crack at Steam being 'considerate' and pausing your downloads when you choose to play a game, whether you like it or not, even if the game has no multiplayer to speak of.

Goteki-45

Just resume each individual download and it works fine. I downloaded Gothic 1-3 yesterday while playing Revenge of the Titans :)

First of all, back in the day a game of this magnitude would have been 69.99 and you'd have had to deal with those idiots at EB Games/Gamestop or another store full of idiots.

Second, 10% off IS a sale, it's 10% off.

Third, how is it dishonest to promote a game? Clearly Valve is pushing this game for a reason, and I'm sure that reason is because it's a really, really awesome game.

$45 bux for this game? How can you have a problem with that?

Just a quick question before i buy:

How is the combat system in W2?

is it under your direct control? For example, click to swing weapon and right click to block, etc

or is a "click to attack" sort of game? kinda like dragon age.

i'm not fond of the latter...

Wow @ illiterate people who think I was complaining about the price. Try actually reading the OP. I was complaining about them exploiting a "sale" to keep the game on the Specials list forever for free advertising.

I hope every new game starts doing this, so the Specials list becomes completely useless, then maybe they'll revamp the system.

And no, it's not important in the big scheme of things. It's just annoying. If you think anything discussed on video game forums is actually important, well...

Odd thread. I do think more games should offer a discount for pre-ordering. Who cares if it gets them free-advertising on the specials list. It IS a special. The Witcher 2 won't be on sale next week, and the special will be over.

Now, if they were offering the Witcher 2 at $50 including the 10% discount, and after the sale ended it was still $50, then that would be fishy.

No kidding, complaining about 5 dollars off of a game is pretty petty.

Would the TC rather pay 50 for the game and have no option at all?

The game deserves to be on the specials list. I hope as many people buy it as possible.

you all forgot something. normally, big brand game doesn't discount at all. so 10% is huge. after releasing it, the price will com back to normal. remember this. I don't understand why people complain whatsoever. whether they give you 10% or it's not even $60, ♥♥♥♥ing people complain blah, blah, blah..... grow up. it's a business, not damn baby sitter.

I'll never get that 5 minutes back from reading such a waste of time complaint. Anyways, everyone stated the obvious. A highly anticipated game on sale will be considered special. How is this not logical no matter length of time?

Honestly though for my own selfish reasons, I am so glad its on the front page just for the simple fact more people will see it and give The Witcher a shot. CDprojekt clearly put alot of time and effort in this game and it shows. So I am more than happy for them to take my money and make plenty more. If they keep making quality games like this, then they can keep their sale and put in on the specials page for full price for all I care.

Can't wait to play this ♥♥♥♥ing game. That 5 dollars will go toward coffee for the up and coming late nighters.

Haha this is hilarious, can't believe some people are complaining about a $5 discount. Seriously, has Steam spoiled you so much from having to pay full price on games?

The majority of gamers are willing to pay full price to play a game right away, if you want to save 25 - 50%, have fun waiting for at least 6 or more months.

This game isn't being published by EA, and because its a PC only game, don't expect a significant discount anytime soon.

You can get the game way cheaper elsewhere, so yeah the devs are using the Special list as a cheap advertising gimmick.

The devs have been advertising their own $5 discount (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_witcher_2) just as much as Steam's preorder price. They have a vested interest in both services because they took the time to integrate Steamworks, and provide their own incentives on their store.

People are reading the OP just fine. What they're not understanding is why those thoughts entered the OP's (and your) mind. But the problem is you're thick in the head, like the OP. Witcher 2 can't help but be listed on the Specials section because preorder discounts are special prices.
