Is this game any good? Is the price perfect for this game or should we hold out till it goes lower?

What are the goals in the "sim" that make it enjoyable?

I bought the game direct from the vendor, before it was even available on Steam, and I've had a fair bit of fun with it. Some of it is downright challenging, like driving a massive cruise ship through a very busy harbor with narrow channels. That first campaign mission really opened my eyes to how tricky it is to handle such a beast. It takes a long time to get it going, but it takes even longer to stop it.
Mostly what I enjoy, though, is the free play. I pick an ocean, a boat, the weather, and so forth, and then I roll out and drive around the waves. If I'm in a bad mood I find it fun to dial up a storm and skip from wave to wave in a little powerboat on a heavy sea. If I'm looking to relax, like after working out for example, then bringing up a big, blue-water vessel on a fine calm sea and a beautiful, sunny day is surprisingly relaxing--doubly so when it's cold and gray outside.
Having said that, though, there is some fun to be had with the "campaign" (such as it is). Rescuing folks, driving a tug, etc. can be engaging, though it's not really a "campaign" in any interesting sense. It's more a string of semi-interesting things you can do. If you're the kind of player who needs a spellbinding narrative or a real reason to keep playing, well, this game probably isn't for you.
So far I have two real complaints. First, the game is really demanding on your system. I just built a new gaming rig with a quad-core, hyperthreaded CPU, 12 GB of RAM, EVGA GTX 580 super-clocked video card, and X-Fi Titanium audio, and the game still doesn't run that well sometimes. The graphics in particular can slow down a bit in busy situations with weather. Oh, and I haven't found any way to force anti-aliasing to work as I'd like, which leaves some jaggies here and there. The water is simulated magnificently but some of the other visuals don't quite measure up.
Second is a complaint that's really my fault: this game cries out for a dual-throttle controller! If you use the keyboard you'll have to constantly hold down keys and that gives you a very binary on/off control over the engines. What I really need to do is break down and buy some nice HOTAS that has a dual throttle so I can get the most out of the game. I guess the complaint is that I don't think the keyboard controls are all that great; you'll really want a dual-throttle controller of some kind. The only joystick I own has but a single throttle and that really doesn't cut it.
So the short version of the story is this: I think the game is definitely worth its sale price, if you're the sort of gamer who enjoys simulations and has a beefy PC. I'm half tempted to re-buy it on Steam just so I don't have to deal with manual updates and such, but that's not worth $14.99. Maybe if it ever hits $5 or $10 I'll re-buy for the convenience.
