Which is it? The bullets seem to hit instantly, but I occasionally see projectiles

Hard to tell because of lag, but I've hit moving targets with a sniper rifle by leading them a hair ... then again I'm not the best shot at moving targets ... I'm a better target than a sniper. Pretty much if a tracer hits you you're hit. It's not too far off even with the lag.

sniper rifle seems to be bullet... when you shoot from far distance its not an instanthit

I was trying to work out if the sniper had bullet drop at all. Over longer distances it really feels like it does.

Sniper / Grenades / RPG are not hitscan.

I believe there's bullet velocity and drop factored in, but it's so insignificant that it's hard to tell. The velocity is huge, so the drop has no time to do much.

Haven't used a range that required compensating for bullet drop. Hard to find a shot on any map that could be that far.
Velocity of the rifles feels much lower than the real deal. I think the devs lowered it because of the tightness of the maps. I'd estimate the sniper rifle's velocity at about that of a high quality air rifle (just at or below the speed of sound).

Hitscan means there is no bullet travel time. If you fire your gun while over an enemy the game determines if that shot hits or not and deals damage instantly if it hits.
A projectile based hit system (BFBC2 for example) calculates travel time and usually bullet drop and only deals damage once the projectile reaches its target.

Ah oh.
So with hitscan its literally where your cross-hair is... the bullet will connect?
And would projectile based be why people complain about hitboxes in BFBC2? Because they think they are aiming at someones head but by the time the bullet reaches it's off the mark?
Does a game like COD use hitscan?

Hitscan= Laser tag essentially
Ballistics= Bullets actually travel
