View Full Version : New to MMO, and I have a question

Alright, I'll admit first, that I really want the TF2 items. There. First step is admitting you have a problem, right?

But I really don't want to pay $50 for a game that I'm not sure I'd be entertained by. (like with the Steam Treasure Hunt, I made some very poor decisions on some game purchases.)
I've never played WoW because I've heard several thing about it that made me kind of nervous about playing it. And the closest I've probably played to an MMo would be RuneScape that I played for 3 days and Legend Of Zork.(both are 'In browser', I believe and free)

I read 'The Obligatory "Is it worth it?" Thread' and it really didn't answer my questions, considering everyone said the same thing, 'Its a standard MMo but better'.

Now, considering I've never played a(or is it 'an') MMo with my life sucked into it, Is it Worth it?

I have no idea if it's worth it to you. If you're seriously only getting it for the items, don't bother. I would say try out the beta and see if you'll actually play it first.

Would I need one of those Beta codes to give it a try?

Yes, but you can get them in multiple places. If I recall correctly, the escapist might still have codes. Also, they're often posted on the RIFT forums.

So what do you play? If you play single player action rpgs, then you might like mmorpgs, for example. If you only play shooters... then you probably won't like this specific one too much, as it's too far away from the shooter genre mechanics. There are mmorpgs with shooter mechanics, it's just that this one isn't one.

Just take it as a friendly advice: Don't buy it for the tf2 items.

Rift is WoW in everything but name. Everything about this game screams WoW-ripoff. It even rips off that graveyard crap where you have to walk back to your body just to respawn. MMORPGs fall into one or both of these two categories, without exception. WITHOUT. EXCEPTION.

Grindfest: Kill this monster x times
and
Fetch Quest Nightmare: Find x amount of this item only found by killing this monster x times

WoW made an effort in Cataclysm to remove such quests, but in the end it all boils down to selecting your target and left clicking.

For the record, Vindictus (free-to-play MMO) actually has decent real-time combat, none of this dps nonsense that WoW pulls that resembles real-time but really isn't. But the game suffers from so many fetch quests that it got to the point where I would just buy the quest ingredients from the market place, and that just defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

Concerning pvp: If you deny that this is 100% fact then you're a dirty liar (http://nerfnow.com/comic/459)

And it's an MMO, not a MMO.

WoW was not the first MMO to make you run back to your corpse one way or another....

As for grindfest, every MMO is like that. Granted, now a days quests actually level you up relatively fast. Back when I played EQ quest xp was almost nonexistant, and it really was a grind, which is EXACTLY why this doesn't feel nearly as much.

Not to mention there are enough elements in this game, *not* from WoW to make it different, and keep the grind in the back of your mind (i.e. not noticing it).

Vindictus is neat and all, but being a micro-transaction with forced limit on play, is kind of.....bleh.

Lastly, for that picture. I laughed when I read it. Very true assessment of MMOs now-a-days.

True, but that's not his point.

The game has absolutely no shame in ripping off from WoW that it even keeps the whole feel of it the absolute same. I mean it's not about the corpse run here, it's about how it's executed. The UI, the gameplay, the skills, etc, everything about it feels like a direct copy from WoW (with a few minor twists).
And while everyone can argue that WoW has never been original, it did take a lot of good ideas from all sorts of other MMOs and made them its own and that is something no one can deny.

Even as someone who played all sorts of MMOs both before and after WoW, I cannot but keep thinking how this may just as well be called Rift: Planes of Warcraft.

They simply do not do enough to set themselves apart, IMO. It is frustrating to me to see some new MMOs offer the same thing that WoW does and dare to call it new, instead of attempt to give something that's actually different. If I wanted to play WoW, that's what I will play. If I'm sick of WoW and want a change, a game like Rift is certainly not where I'll be moving to.

How is this hard to understand for these developers? You do not compete with WoW by making the same game!

But hey, if it actually works for them and they get enough people to keep this going, then more power to them. I'd personally rather have something that tries to break the WoW MMO mold instead.

Well, shooters are ok, but they are getting kinda stale(for me). But I have played some RPG games. Like Oblivion and Fallout and enjoyed them.

I'm not. That's why I asked. :)

Well, considering I've never played WoW, Its new to me. :) And I have got to say that that picture was used to describe TF2 once. lol.

I've played a bit of the beta, and I think I'm going to enjoy it. I only wanted to play it for an hour, (as a test drive) and i ended up playing for almost 5. The only reason I stopped was because I remembered I had to work in the morning.

Thanks guys.

Well, shooters are ok, but they are getting kinda stale(for me). But I have played some RPG games. Like Oblivion and Fallout and enjoyed them.

I mentioned shooters because they have their focus somewhere else. In the type of MMORPG that Rift is, the focus is on developing your character and experiencing a story. In your typical shooter, the focus is on developing your own skill with a mouse. Okay, that's possibly oversimplyfing things, but still.

Oblivion can be quite different. Rift revolves around killing mobs. Most of the quests have you kill mobs, and then kill some more mobs to find your way back so you can turn in the quest and get another that has you kill more mobs. Oblivion focuses on its story. You can play through it as a pacifist with a very low number of kills (Fallout NV too, but that was clearly not intended).

Anyway, if you played the beta for five hours you know what to expect...

Play a ten-day trial of WoW (if you've got 25 gig free space on your HDD). MMO's are like Runescape. Imagine Dragon Age: Origins, only with more players (or RS with DA:Origins). Play Guild Wars as well: that's a one-time only payment, and it's pretty decent if you don't have WoW.

As an MMOer, I say go for it. If you're into Divinity 2 or any of the games I've mentioned above (not to mention Elder Scrolls), you'll hopefully enjoy rift. Hope this has helped ^_^

Let's get something straight. I hate MMOs. Every single one I've ever played is a grindfest/fetch quest nightmare. By default I assume every MMORPG is a load of dog turd until it can prove itself otherwise. But here's the problem: Rift won't let me see myself wrong. The girl has a $50 admission fee, and I have no way of knowing if she even knows how to dance. Yes, she looks very pretty. But they always look pretty. Looking nice doesn't mean anything. If I throw down the $50 and don't like it (and I have no reason to think I will since there's no free trial), then I'm out fifty bucks. No thanks.

I never had any intention of pre-ordering Mafia 2 back in August, but the demo was so good that it convinced me to. Rift is asking me to make a leap of faith. To put it bluntly:
NO

Call me when they put up a demo.

Means, you have played Rift for one single day.
And now you are saying: "Rift is WoW in everything but name".
Are you a WoW Hammer Legion Member, or just a bad troll?
And why are you playing mmos if you hate them that much?
