How exactly is the SS rank unlocked??

You've got to ace all the level conditions. Like getting the 99 combo, not taking a hit from the boss, getting the needed amount of scrap and finishing the level under par.

So far I've managed an SS in level one, it's by far the easiest in my opinion. There's one room halfway through where you can loop through and trigger the enemy spawns to get the 99 combo and collect the scrap needed. The boss will die really quickly if you use the 4th weapon leveled up.

I also forgot to mention SS can only be achieved on hard mode and you hae to collect the data cubes for the level too.

Some helpful tips:

Replay the level to find the quickest method of gaining combo points. Once you hit 99, it doesn't matter what you do.

Use that same place you got the 99 combo points to try and collect materials. Since speed is a factor, do not get greedy.

The Wave Emitter can help expedite the process, by making you have to travel through less and still have the same result. However, the Laser SMG is the best weapon for this due to rapid fire.

Learn the boss's strategy, and exploit it for minimal damage, if any at all. In spite of ranking, if you take a hit, find out why as you let yourself die and try again. Do this until its perfect, then redo the stage.

Par Time is where I have the most trouble. At the end of the stage, you see the par time. Get half of that for the full bonus. This can be hard when you are focused on getting combo points and materials, but it is doable. I would like it more if the par time gave you the bonus based on staying within that limit, rather than denying you perfection.

If it's too difficult: Play on Normal until you get A Rank on all of the stages, and play on Hard after. The benefits you may gain may help you in the long term.

As d0gr0ck said, use the fourth weapon maxed out against the bosses, it deals ridiculous damage to them, it's the fastest way to take them down along with using grenades, but using grenades is risky as you become a sitting duck for a moment.

For the bosses, never forget to use your dash to avoid the majority if not all of their attacks since you are invincible while dashing.

Don't worry about taking a hit throughout the stage, the only place you want to perfect without taking damage are the bosses, taking damage throughout the stage itself does not matter.

Otherwise Kyithios gave the hints needed. Doing half under par time isn't as difficult as it sounds once you know the stages. The hardest part in some levels is achieving half of par time along with the required materials, but once you do the level a couple of times you'll figure out how to balance it out to get both.
