View Full Version : So who's gonna play RIFT?

Now we've bought the items, who's gonna be nicking their mother's credit cards to pay for a game we bought just for two TF2 Items?

I like MMO's, so I guess that was the bonus for me. Problem is that I'm stuck to having the lowest graphics on Runescape (no, I don't pay monthly), and fair graphics on WoW.

I've seen some of Steam's screenshots for the game and they look like Divinity II's. Divinity however has more or less the same graphics as DA: Origins, but will THAT play on my laptop?

Will I have to tone down a loat of sh*t just to play this game? 8 gig seems brilliant compared to WoW's 25-gig free space requirement.

Oh, and does anyone know if there are pre-paid cards for this game coming out soon? Only I prefer them to having to steal my own card ^_^.

Another thing: what're people's reactions gonna be when we find out the items are gonna get a justification/nerf (the axe's infiite fire time reduced?).

Personally, I'll feel stupid for paying for another monthly subscription ^_^

I'm trying to play the Beta to see if it's worth a buy but I keep getting a fatal error. 3DX couldn't initialize or something.

edit: Lol, just tryed it again after I typed this and it's up. Lets see if this is worth a buy + 15/ month.

edit after play: AhhhhIII won't be getting this game after all.

Just another bland, crappy mmo. I'll keep my money, thanks.

I love people who fall for this kind of bull♥♥♥♥.

Subscription fee for a game. I pay for a game ONCE, maybe several times due to expansions but I will never pay $15 to play a game for a month.

That's why WoW is rated 12+ - to get people who aren't even in their teens to pay £20/month, as they won't even read the billing terms and conditions.

At least you're getting thirty days free with this. If I can't get the pre-paid game-time cards, I'm cancelling my subscription with Rift, and keeping my items which'll get nerfed (probably).

Protip: If you're into MMORPGs but don't want to pay monthly subscriptions, wait for this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Wars_2), apparently beta is out 'soon', and the main game is released in late '011.

If you've never play the prequel (Guild Wars), look here (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page).

They are both pay-once, no monthly subscriptions.

However, Guild Wars 1 population is slowly disintegrating.

I played Guild wars: Game of the Year Edition on Steam and it's just World of Warcraft with better graphics (I mean this in a good way, don't worry).

GW2 looks good, and I wanna get it. Hopefully there's more of an MMO feel, rather than doing quests solo/groups and having cities as lobbies.

I thought the main reason MMOs had monthly subscriptions was because the company had to deal with server upkeep and everything. Obviously that wouldn't be $10 per month per player, but they still need to cover costs don't they?

For the most part, I agree.

It's definitely fun going through the storylines, but other than that, I find it's a title grind-fest, and I am slightly bored of it now, which is why I rarely play it for longer than 30 minutes each week now.

At first, I didn't really think Guild Wars 2 would be much different from the other generic MMORPGs, but I'm really looking forward to get it now.

I can't imagine the cost to host a server is especially high. You can rent colo space for like, $100/mo. and put together your own rig(s) for hosting at $2000 (at the very expensive end).

Video games, cash shop items, subscription fees and the like are a pleasantly lucrative thing to get in to. You produce it once, then you can duplicate and resell it conceivably as long as there is interest in purchasing it, and in the case of expiring cash shop items and subscription fees, you can resell it again and again and again to the same people even.

"Server/maintenance costs" are probably one of the thinner excuses one could give for charging $5-$15 for cosmetic items, having items that cost no money to maintain "expire" on players and need to be repurchased or refreshed somehow, and $15/mo. fees just for the privilege to play a game you've already bought.

Rift is about grind and it gets boring really fast... Oh wait.. you play wow.. so it's just normal and enjoyable for you.

Ohohohho don't make me laugh harder... GW is nothing like wow. It's way better in every aspect. I played it for 2 years so i think i've seen more than you :)

I enjoyed my few months playing GW, and it wasn't that grinding. Agreed, WoW can get boring for grinding, and doesn't offer as much story. But when I played GW:GOTY Edition, I didn't pay for the mmo I expected. But still - looking back it does make a good reliever from WoW (not to mention all the nerfs everyone's getting on it). ^_^

You're right, Guild Wars is very different from WOW, mainly because its focus is on skills. Plus, it doesn't force you to slow-travel everywhere, the instanced worlds don't force you to wait for mobs to respawn, etc. It's just faster paced and the PvE is far more story-driven.

That said, how is RIFT actually different from WOW? I've played LOTRO and WOW far too much and I'm thoroughly sick of them, but I can't find much info about the gameplay. It seems unremarkable from what I've read, and I'm not too interested in just another WOW clone.

Rift has a good story with an actual story quest chain that brings you into the game and when you get tired of grinding mobs or doing quests, you can take part in massive rift events or join a PVP war front. You can also craft items and gather or buy and sell on the auction house, and in PVP servers you can have fun attacking players from the other faction just be careful though because they can and will call for help from their guild mates.

You know, that's actually good advice right there, no need to be a jerk about it. :D If you like WoW or Diablo 2, anything in between the two, or other Action RPGs, you will probably like Rift.

If you don't like WoW for any reason other than "it's WoW and everybody plays it", you'll probably not like Rift.

I'm actually playing Rift to hold me over until GW2 comes out. I only got a 3 month subscription since most MMO's fates are decided by then, and the game itself was a gift from a friend so I'm comfortable paying monthly for it if I like it. I've logged insane hours on Guild Wars from playing with friends, having a character in every profession, PVP, etc...and I usually purchase any extra things they offer (aside from cosmetic) to give them support for not having monthly fees.

And I agree, whether you think one is better than the other, Guild Wars and WoW are apples & oranges. I'm tired of every MMO that comes out being compared to WoW.

I have to disagree with this from conversations I've had with friends. I didn't like WoW because during the trials I did, there just wasn't much to do until you got into higher levels. Everyone I know who is an avid WoW player just kept telling me "Get your character to level 30/40/50/whatever and then the real fun starts". My understanding is that Rift's raids/dungeons/etc start at a much lower level than WoW's do, so it's possible someone might find more to do in Rift at the lower levels, and that might keep them playing. I never paid for WoW mainly because I got bored and didn't want to "work" to get to the fun part.

I could be wrong (esp since this was before cataclysm), but that's just the impression I got.

I'm not sure why everyone is so against monthly fees....If you have a job, and like playing a good MMO with friends and an active online community, then who cares. You are funding the servers and future development of the game. MMOs are updated FAR more frequently than other video games. This includes bug fixes and content.

Typically when there is an expansion it adds an entirely new games-worth of content, which explains the extra price.

From what I've gathered most people are playing this until GW2 or SWTOR come out, which is all fine and dandy, but I hope RIFT succeeds. It really is a fun game.

I first noticed RIFT when Valve announced the crossover promos. Then I checked the site, and forgot about that almost completely. I think I'm going to enjoy my time as a teleporting assassin who rides a giant war-turtle under the banner of a mad scientist. Oh yes.

I have been playing WoW for a few months and I shall be canceling my subcription and getting Rift.

Rift is shaping up to be an extremely great MMO.

I think MMOs should be limited to people who have their own credit/debit cards, haha.

First monthly fees are fine, considering the amount of patches and added content that goes into well kept MMOs, the free content, use of servers, hotfixes, arena seasons, etc, make up for the cost. I have no issue with them, wow makes alot of money for instance but it is also Blizzards most exspensive project ever.

Second GW1 wasnt WoW, it was more akin to a Diablo esque game. The only difference was it was 3D 3rd person instead of birds eye view. And one thing that really irked me about guild wars, no jump and you were basicilly set on a railtrack style of quests, the world was full of invisible walls impassible cliffs and pathways blocked by twigs or minor increases in elevation.

As for the TF2 weapons? TF2 is becoming such a scam its not even funny. these weapons should be asthetic only. The man co market is fine by me, since drop rates tended to be random and depend too much on luck, but those dam boxes/pay for key lottery tickets and now this buy this and we give you this? Stupid. Not everyone has 60 bucks to shell out to a WoW clone just to have a weapon you can't get any other way.
Lastly Rift is a carbon copy MMO and not worth getting on its own merits, might as well play the free warhammer trial, get GW1, or play WoW/EQ1/2. All of which have been out longer and had more content added to it and are better in some way or another except maybe warhammer, well the lore is better.
