View Full Version : Help an argument end

A friend and I are having an argument as to whether the term "QQ" is common throughout gamers over the internet, or indeed anyone of nerdy origins.
To bring this argument to a halt, as neither of us are gaining headway, I request something very simple.
After reading this, simply reply to the post with either a "yes" or a "no" in relation to whether you know what the term means or not.
This is not a competition for viewers, I quite frankly do not care whether you do know the term or not as a marker of whether you are cool, hip or fly, so don't lie.
You may add comments after your answer to assist either side of the argument if you wish.

I saw it used quite a lot when I played CoD 4. Maybe its use is more specific to different gaming communities?

Well, I assume it's two eyes crying, meaning that you're accusing someone of being a crybaby. So, if it's that, then I'd say it's only somewhat common, at least as far as I've seen - since I barely know what it is.

I thought it was about crying eyes as well, so I looked it up. Words (or in this case, MEMEs) change meaning over the years, and QQ is no different. Heck, I quite dislike the term "pre-order" because it is quite literally IMPOSSIBLE to order something BEFORE you order it. But it is was it is.

I looked it up a while ago. The first time I heard of it personally was the TF2 achievement "BarbeQueQ". I am led to believe it's a very popular term among WOWers. It's supposed to have come from one of the early Warcraft games originally, as you'd press Q twice to quit.

QQ has its origin in early blizzard games. Hold alt down and tap the Q key twice and you exit the game immediately (kind of like Valve games' F10 key). Since then it has been associated with two crying eyes, insulting people for crying too much online.

Contrary to popular belief, QQ is not a set of crying eyes. It actually originated with the advent of Warcraft II. On battlenet, you could press ALT+Q+Q to immediately exit the match and program. Thus the term "QQ" was to tell people to just quit because they are unskilled. The term later developed and lost it's origin and is usually mistaken as crying eyes.
I always thought it was crying eyes.
So in a way, No.

Ah, you young gamers, think everything was originated yesterday (or from blizzard!).
QQ is actually an old MUD (multi-user dungeon) command which terminated your connection to the game, been around since the early 80's. They would have stripped down the "quit" to "q" for speeds sake (when you're game is all typing, you want to streamline) but its next to "w" which is used as a direction...so would often result in lots of mis♥♥♥♥s ending in a disconnect, hence they started to use "QQ" instead.
The guys at blizzard were probably geeks who played MUD's...and incorporated that into their early games. :)

QQ can mean a few things. CTRL(Or was it ALT?) + Q + Q was the shortkey in WarCraft III to quickly exit the game(Or trick newbs into using it so they leave the game).
Generally QQ is, to the TF2 crowd, "Cry Some Moar".
Yes. :)

This.
In blizzard games the command to exit was Alt+Q+Q. Like pressing Alt+F4 to exit a windows application.
Consider a starcraft / warcraft multiplayer game. In the final push against the enemy base, the winning player would mock his opponent by saying "QQ".
It is a term of saying "resign", "Have some courtesy and quit, admitting your loss" or "lol pwn3d n00bzor".
Over the course of years leavers would comment before leaving "I think the zerg need to be nerfed", "U use haxxxxx" or "haxxor ♥♥♥♥♥♥".
The winner would respond with the infamous "QQ more", which got to mean from "quit again incompetant adversary" to "cry more" due the resemblance of the double "Q" as eyes crying and the fact that the leavers were , in fact, crying.
