I wanted to be a Guardian but after seeing the human hair types I said what the flying figgity fudge? I can't have long hair? So now I have to roll Defiant just so I can be a human with long hair.

I'm leaning toward Guardians, but not sure yet. Guardians have more interesting quests and their first dungeon (Realm of the Fae) is way better than the Defiant's first dungeon (Iron Tomb).
If you've never played Fae, you owe it to yourself to level a Guardian to at least ~20 so you can experience it. The blizzard toward the end is awesome.

Why not both? I'm currently in a Guardian guild, so unless that changes I'll be running a Guardian. However, I played through the Defiant starting area and like that better. It seemed MUCH quicker to get through. I haven't been in either dungeon though. I've leveled both to about 15.

I've played both and I personally like Guardian more. Although Defiant has an awesome feel to it as well.
I'll be a High Elf Bard named Aeria (on Belmont server) :)
I've also tried Realm of the Fae, Iron Tomb, and Darkening Deeps in beta (personally like Iron Tomb the most from the two starting ones) but that may be because it was "new" to me after already doing RotF 15+ times.
Also, I find Sanctum a lot better organized than Meridian.
EDIT: I have three Guardian characters at 20ish and two Defiants at 20ish.

I've only played Defiant in the beta because that's what my friends were playing. I don't think they're going to go on after the beta though, so I haven't decided which side to go on. I'm tempted to go Guardian, since with Aion it seemed like the more serious players went light, and there were more immature people going dark just because they looked badass. With the other comments on this thread, I'm even closer to choosing Guardian though!

That's one of the reasons I'm leaning Guardian.
There is no bad or good side in this game, they simply have different views on how to save Telara. In essence, they're both "good." However, for whatever naive reason, several people seem to label the Defiants as bad and are thus choosing them for that reason. I don't really want to be on the same side as all the WoWbabies.

I am personally going to be playing as a Guardian myself, I like the idea that the gods believe I’m mighty enough to be among the ascended and to purge the world of evil. I really liked them from the lore point of view. That aside after playing the beta I like the look and feel of the starting zone and instances on the Guardian side more then the Defiant side. Also the high end PvP gear that I’ve seen via vendors looks rather nice on my character. I don’t fancy the mechanical mount that the Defiant gets either. These are just some of the various reasons I’m going to play as a Guardian.

Defiant. They're closer to my actual views, and they've got a mad scientist as their leader. What I like about both factions, though, is that they're not die cast black and white moralitys. Being a Defiant isn't going to instantly make me some evil baby eating neer-do-well, in the same way that a Guardian isn't automaticaly a goody two shoes savior.

agreed on all account...except I don't think the defiant leader, Asha Catari, is a mad scientist. There is a "mad scientist" char with her though, which is bad ♥♥♥.
Defiant all the way! although for open beta i'm making myself play Guardians

Quick question on a somewhat related note (as I have not actually tried it yet). On a PvE server, can a Guardian mail something to a Defiant? I know there is cross-faction chat, as I was talking to some Defiant people in Freemarch last beta.
I suggest playing both factions at least until about level 20, because there are some interesting cross characters from the starting tutorial zone. You see certain characters captured or mini-bosses etc.

As far as I know, no you will not be able to mail from your guardian to your defiant characters.

I believe I tried doing that in one of the betas and it came back with an error message preventing me from doing so.

I will be playing as a Kelari on the Defiant side. Though I am somewhat disappointed I cant have light skin on kelari.. only that dark elf look :(

Though bluish-purple, my Kelari is definitely very light-skinned.
I'll be a Defiant. I had gone for Alliance in WoW some six years ago, and I regretted that many times over. Same with Order in Warhammer, though objectively that may have been the better choice -- I just didn't care as much for the people. Guardians are likely to attract the same kind of people who typically play Alliance or Order, and I think this time around I'd prefer to play with a more tight knit community.
Also, I like the Eth, and the lore of the Defiant appeals more to me than the Guardians background.
I'll also play on a PvE server for a change. Mostly because I do not believe that the PvP servers will have balanced populations, and the system seems to encourage (but not discourage) ganking, which I have no interest in. I prefer challenging PvP, and I guess I'll only find that in Warfronts and in duels. :)

I'm Defiant for sure, why you ask, well... who doesn't want to defy gods?
Let me just paint everything with some old dumb black and white painting.
The Defiant believe that science is the only way forward, the Guardians all go to church, not just on sundays... they go there every damn day.

Actually, many of the Guardians are not avid "church goers," but were in fact picked for their tenacity, stubbornness, or skill at dealing death. Perhaps even their way of seeing "good." Some were picked based on past ties or hate for some of the enemies of the Gods.
The Defiants are those who defy the Gods and their way, preferring technology, which in turn made the Gods unable to pick them to ascend.
Just as I may be a member of a particularly Christian family, I am not one myself.

More of the naivete seen from the WoWbabies on the official Rift forums.
Telara isn't like RL - Gods DO exist there, it's not a faith-based culture like RL. There's no "holier than thou" attitude or anything like that. Guardians simply believe that the Gods will help them and show them the path to save Telara, whereas the Defiants don't trust the gods and would rather rely on technology.
And as has been stated, Guardians are chosen for their MIGHT, nothing else.

Yeah, the factions in RIFT are unusual in that, instead of trying to achieve something different by the same means, they're trying to achieve the same thing via different means. A subtle but important difference.

I like Defiants main hub with the large stairway and balcony to stand on and shoot giant invading mobs. Otherwise the layout is ok.
I am going guardian due to guild. Otherwise I like the Defiants intro into how they play out into the game.
I like Guardians over all layout of the starting level 10+ zone. The city layout is OK...a bit better than Defiants NPC's I think.
Anyway....Playing Defiant for O.B. So I can see where they go 20-40....so I can jump you all on my Guardian on Head Start... mwahahaha :D

Guardian, I've been the "evil" side in every other game I've played so I'm going to try the "good guy" side once.

So basically the way to being "good" or "evil" is like Two Worlds? "Having different views on saving the world" is WoW. Maybe if the Defiant were the rift creatures, and guardians the paladins of a sort, then maybe it'd be bettter - save the world, or destroy it.

Well...the Bahmi are actually a hybrid species born of a Human and a humanoid from the Plain of Air.

If you desperately want a good side and an evil side, consider that the Defiants already know what happened in a future where the Guardians were allowed their ways, while the Guardians just do as they are told by angel-like beings that claim to be messengers of their conveniently absent gods.

In every MMO that came before Rift, I always played on the "light" side. So did all my friends. For that reason and that reason only, I think we're gonna roll Defiant in this game.

At first I thought Defiant. Originally, their racials were ridiculous. But it seems the last few updates have leveled off the playing field for them. As of now I'm not entirely sure. I'll probably look into their lore more and go from there. I like playing characters with good depth of story.

Defiant.
The thing that puts me off Guardian is the fact that the dwarves get some ♥♥♥♥ty -50% fall damage passive instead of something useful like leap or +move speed.

You obviously did not read between the line in my post.
When playing as a guardian you're character will have prayed to the vigil within 10 quests, this was however not the point of my post. What I meant was the overall feeling the developers express when you interact with npc's.
To be more precise, I am not talking about the ascended guardians, I am talking about the npc's and how most of them refere to holy items, heretics and how everything is bless me here and bless me there.
