Being as I can't find a recent thread on here or Google, is there something up with this game?
I haven't played for months and I am now unable to even get into a game.
I've tried 5 times and all that happens is I lose connection to Steam and my router drops out. I go into a game and get the loading screen just sit there at 66% loaded and the wireless send/receive light just chugs away until it drops.
My connection is usually completely stable and the only issues I've had with it today are with this and have played other non-Steam online games before and after with zero problems.
I can also stream BBC news for hours at a time with no problems.
I know it has always had server connection issues and on Google this is showing up as happening over the past year, so is it me or anyone else?

Wireless or wired?
Have you veryfied your game to ensure all the changes over the time you have not been playing are done?
What O/S are you using?

Wireless, the game says it is up to date and Windows 7.
Nothing that I am aware of has changed in the last 7 months of having this machine and it is only this game that is displaying any problems today or any time in the last 7 months.
I haven't played since before Christmas and I have never had this problem before.

I had this problem a while back. Loading up TF2 on my laptop with a wireless connection would cause the internet to drop. It was fine for a long time then it just started happening. Apparently it had something to do with my router being a bit older and not being able to deal with the amount of connections I had. Upgrading my router solved the problem.

Wireless has been an issue for some of late and bearing in mind you need to keep a constant connection to the L4D2 world it could be that.
Although your game is up to date that is not the same as verifying the local files. My games was "up to date" but also had 1250 sound files missing (I won't go into the reason). Run a verify, just in case a crucial component has become corrupted.

Yeah Wireless is not made for gaming, my friend plays wireless and she doesn't play long and she gets knocked off, the router has to be restarted, I think it's just too much being sent threw the wireless and it not being fast enough has hard wired. Also make sure no one else is on your wireless, it may work if it's just you on it, but if you have others in the household or other devices connected it can make it worse. I recommend being hard wired in for gaming.
Turn off UPnP in your router settings and then restart your router, then reconnect your PC/laptop and try to play.
This works for me, I have/had EXACTLY the same issue.
I had the same problem with a linksys wireless router for a while. But the problem was fixed after properly upgrading the firmware to the latest version.
If there's a firmware upgrade for your router you might wanna try it. Just make sure you follow all the instructions... the linksys one required a full reset to factory default settings before working correctly after the upgrade.

Thank you for the responses, more to know that it is not just me than how to fix it.
I'll try to do sort out a solution with resets, etc., but bearing in mind that I have zero problems with anything else it would indicate it is L4D2 rather and I will just have to live with not playing it.
Life is too short to be trying to get just one broken thing working when the rest of the world works just fine.
Also of note is that I defined the problem down to it drops out when I try to send a message in the lobby even before trying to enter the game.
I tried to warn the group I might not get into the game and after pressing enter to send it drops out and the message doesn't even get there.

LOL, lets not get all "carpe diem" over L4D.
Turning UPnP off to play L4D2 isn't too much of a chore really. It's just an On/Off selection in the router settings. Once you've forwarded your ports manually then you just have to switch UPnP off whenever you want to play. (Or even just leave it off if it doesn't affect other games/software on your PC.)
