View Full Version : Does the level design bug anyone else?

I hate to be "that guy" but whenever I play a game, I can't help but criticize the level design. They're fences EVERYWHERE in L4D! And overturned trucks and buses. I understand the need for a natural kind of "wall" but this is ridiculous.
Take the massive amount of fences in Dark Carnival, why is a good section of the carnival fenced off? Why is there a fence around the marry-go round? Why is the parking lot fenced off? There are just sooo many unnecessary fences in this game that it really breaks the immersion.
Anyone else feel this way?

Have you ever been to a amusement park??
They have fences around rides to keep people from getting on without paying and to keep them from getting hurt or killed and the park getting sued out of business. The fences around the park are to deter people from sneaking in.

Dark Carnival has the most realistic amount of fences, to me at least. Dead Center/The Passing has the truly unrealistic obstructions...

Well, L4D levels has some unrealistic design sense in them but they serve good gameplay purposes and reduce the size of the map file with its tortuous and condensed layout.

The way I see it (particularly Dead Center), is that after the outbreak, CEDA put up a crap ton of fences to help quarantine/corral the public. Naturally, it doesn't go as planned, and the fencing is still up. It appears to be temporary (though strong!)

here I thought this was a thread about the crappy open areas, blocked off roofs for 'optimizing' and other weird stuff they did to make versus game play less fun
and here you are complaining about fences XD LOL

Yeah...most of the fences are logical. CEDA put them there. Dead Center especially. Dark Carnival is an amusement park...which which has probably seen a significant increase in popularity recently with the upcoming Midnight Riders tour, so some temporary queueing solutions were made.

Well you could always have more invisible walls then complain about that too.

If you play any game that linear there is always things blocking paths. Becuase nothing exists beyond the fence/obstruction.
In the world of left 4 dead , police fences, boarded windows, turned over trailers vehicles blocking a roads and doors/windows makes sense.
In other games you'll see the same thing but done in different ways. Like Mafia 2, you routinely see tall fences with a large tree behind it, or some buildings. But behind the fence there is actually nothing.. You cannot get behind the fence either.
In some games like Max Payne, in the street levels, the roads just go into dead ends. Alley ways are just dead ends too..
This type of particular thing is not just seculded to left 4 dead. Its in all games. ;)
The only game I ever saw that truly had all geomentry navigable 100% with no invis walls would be the Grand theft auto Series.
