If I purchased from the Trion store am I still able to add it to the steam client so that I can use the overlay and others can see me as online/ingame? Or have I missed the chance since I preordered before steam offered it. Any help is much appreciated.
You can always add any game you want to the steam list to enable the steam overlay.
Open your Game Libary, On the top of the window, go to "Games" > "Add A Non-Steam Game to my Libary" > "Browse..." > Browse to your Rift installation folder and choose one of the binary .exe files located there.
Right now I use this file:
"...\RIFT Beta\riftpatchbeta.exe"

but it won't work the same way it would have if I had purchased from steam?
I guess it's just the picture missing, and potential achievement counting...not sure how MMO's work in steam.

Well, the MMO runs separate anyway. By adding it to steam via the method _dp said, it allows you to use the overlay etc. I do not think the steam version even has achievement tracking with it (seeing as how there are so many). The only difference will be that when people see you playing the game, it will say that you are playing a Non-Steam game called RIFT, rather than just saying RIFT.
Pressing Shift+Tab (or whatever alternate) will (should) still open the overlay.
It would work the same way. MMOs usually work different from other integrated games like shooter.
The main reason is, that the whole update and patch process is more important and the actual gamefiles are only distributed from the MMO developer and not from steam.
When you purchased RIFT from steam, you get access to the code and can download the RIFT Patcher. With the RIFT Patcher started, the updater tool downloads the gamefiles independently from Steam.
So you don't miss anything and if you follow the instructions in my last post, it will behave exactly like the Version purchased from steam.
//eek, well that's basically what Taric said.

Can someone who has purchased/linked an MMO on Steam confirm if the Steam overlay actually works?
I would really love to be able to browse an chat with the overlay, but I didn't think it worked with "external" games like this.

Read Post #2 in this thread. Really, it can't be that hard...

CO had 712 achievements, all Steam tracked. Bit redundant now though...

I asked for confirmation of whether the Steam Overlay works with non-Steam games, not how to add a game.
Well then "Yes". Otherwise I would not have posted how to do so.

In case you don't trust _dp, because he's funny like that, I can also confirm that it works.
