Half-life and Crysis has throw away stories. Elder Scrolls series is good. Gothic series, especially 1 and 2, are also really good.

Oblivion was quite the disgrace to people who really enjoy Elder Scrolls though.

I will never understand why people say Portal. Theres barely anything to it...

I just finished Mafia 2 and i thought the story was actually pretty decent and finished well.
Oblivion, and in particular Shivering Isles.
Black ops, yeah yeah i know but i really enjoyed the campaignand story.
Metro 2033, despite it being based on a book and missing out so much detail of the book.
Uncharted is ok, though absolutely crammed with cliches and too much cheesey moments.
And probably my most favourite, Assassins Creed, in particular Ezios story spanning the 2nd game and Brotherhood.

Ok fair point, but the story is really just beginning with Portal 2. It's the back story which is really good in Portal. The whole people put through the test chambers and graffiti the walls. That kind of thing.

Silent Hill series for great psychological analysis
Metal Gear Solid series for memorable characters and complex yet understandable plots
ICO and Shadow of the colossus, the best translation simplicity could ever have
Metro 2033 for a good message
All Bioware games (at least the ones i've played) for characters and story in general, but mostly characters.
Legacy of Kain series, shame it was "discontinued", such a great tale.

MGS until MGS4 where the series went crazy and dies. Nearly every cutscene starts with "the nanomachines..." and there was so much CRAP that could have been in codec chat but "NOOOOO LETS HAVE IT ALL IN THE CUTSCENES" and that bit where snake goes into the corridor HE HAD NO REASON TO BE THERE AND WAS COOKED ALIVE FOR NO REASON OTHER THAN TO MAKE THE SCENE EMOTIONAL.

Fallout (3 and NV)

SPOILER WARNING

Did this really have a story? I mean, it's pretty much "Oh noes! Daddy ran away!" followed by doing whatever the hell you want for 50 hours and finally coming back and doing "the quest", which is a pretty darn short and simple "story".

Granted, I haven't played NV so maybe that's better.

To this day I have not seen a non-linear game environment that was able to have an epic story along the lines of FFVI and FFVII. I mean, dude, I *cried* when Aeris died in FFVII. I also cried when Eli dies at the end of EP2. Or how about in Bioshock when you're working tirelessly to get to Andrew Ryan and then finding out that you're actually under mind control and Andrew Ryan actually orders you to kill him? Talk about powerful ♥♥♥♥. These were characters that you got to know and care about. In FO3 when daddy dies it's like, "Huh, wow, they killed him off quick..". I do not understand why Bethesda goes through huge efforts to get top-rate actors to voice their characters and then kill them off as soon as they can. They totally wasted Patrick Stewart's talents in Oblivion.

I liked the games, sure. They're great. I like a lot of these type of non-linear games because you can do whatever you want, but story quality really, really hurts as a result.

*climbs off soapbox*

No, I am a person, not an opinion.

As far the topic goes, it's a tricky question. I find it difficult to judge a game's story on it's own without taking the rest of the game into consideration.

When I look at my favourite games, their actual stories are pretty shallow: Bioware's stuff being mostly 'You are teh chosen one, go rescue the world', Max Payne and GTA being more or less gangster film parodies/imitations, Ico's and SotC's stories being very simple, etc..

I'd say the games with the most interesting stories are
Planescape Torment (number 1 by far, best story ever)
Psychonauts
Day of the Tentacle
The Void
Stalker - SoC
Hitman
Edit: Deus Ex (dang, completely forgot about it)

Please tell me you are joking???

MGS4 was an abomination

Hour long cutscenes.
The first 2 acts were the only ones with rebel/pmc gameplay.
That awful act 3 where you follow that guy for ages.
That STUPID MICROWAVE SCENE
Plot holes (how did snake get to the roof at the end?)
Drebin made the game to easy. Out of ammo? Just make some appear magically!
No need to buy guns from Drebin, you get the M4 for free and it's the best machine gun in the game.
That stupid octo-camo.
Mediocre bosses
Shadow moses scene was way too short.
No codec chat
WHERE DID RAIDEN'S 2ND ARM GO?!?!?

And this is coming from someone who got the Big Boss emblem on MGS4 (0 kills, 0 alerts, less than 5 hours completion time, no healing items, hardest difficulty), beat MGS3 12 times and got nearly every secret and beat all the other games too. MGS4 is a good game in it's own right but it is awful next to the glory of MGS3.

I really like when video games separate themselves as a medium. Keeping the player rooted in the feeling that he or she is the character they play and that they're not just reading a book. I don't think there have been many that capture that.

Planescape is a very thorough game that has some of the best dialogue of any that I've played. I think it's unfortunate that this kind of depth in RPGs and games in general hasn't really been rekindled. I think it unfortunately falls prey to not taking advantage of the strong suits that video games can have. It feels too much like a book at times and I'm taken back by that.

Myst tells it's story without the aid of pounds and layers of dialogue so it separates itself from being too much like a book. It's there for the player to find themselves. I can't find a lot of fault with Myst. I think I've seen marie pavie say it a few times on these forums that Myst is the reason we're playing games the way we do now and I agree with that. I think it's influence is far reaching and we still see it today in games like Silent Hill, Penumbra, and early Resident Evil games (not for setting, but presentation of story).

Half-Life I think really plays on a strong point that the video game medium has over others and that's subtlety and atmosphere. You can find many things throughout the game that aren't tossed at you in text or a cutscene that really build up the reality of what they've made. There's a lot to mention because I think Valve really pulls this off well, so I wont go into detail. One of the downsides to Half-Life that I think Valve could really capitalize on is the linearity of the game. It's the last big leap I think that they could make for the series and tie all of the things they've done previous and really come out ahead. Games like STALKER show that open settings and free-form gameplay can work with atmosphere and story development can really work, but it's still not polished and refined enough for the people who enjoy linear games to accept. Valve could do this, I think, if they wanted to.

Honorable mentions for me:
STALKER - really captured the essence of a place forgotten and passed over with only survivors left to kick dust around
Mafia - probably the most cinematic game I've played; masterfully done I think (the first one at least, never got to finish the second)
Mother series - some of my favorite games that kept things concise but had a large underbelly that they left sort of open ended for the player to ponder on
Deus Ex - a story and atmosphere rich game and very enjoyable gameplay; maybe only tarnished by it's dated visuals

I guess, after reading back of what I've typed up, characters really aren't all that important to me when I think of a story. It's sort of backwards from what I would imagine a story to be about, but maybe that's why I enjoy them so much. The genuineness of a game world can go a long way.

MGS2 was great but the ending was average.

After an epic fight against MG Rays you have to listen to a ton of codec chat about how you were named after a fighter plane when they could just have said

Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2.

The best:

Half-life - (Only if you take in all of the fiction.)
Fallout - (Not so much 3, but 1, 2 and NV were really good.)
TES III: Morrowind - (The fiction as a whole is amazing.)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent - (Also the most horrifying game I've ever played.)

The worst I've ever played?

All Call of Duty games after the second - (Can't stand the newer games.)

HA! If you'd pay attention you'd see how wrong this is. HL2 has the best story of any game ever, mostly for the great back story surrounding HL2 (The time between HL1 and HL2).

Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur's Gate 2. Planescape: Torment also looked pretty interesting story-wise, but I only got halfway through the game before I decided to take a break from it, uninstalled it then lost the CDs. So yeah.

And, the story may not have been too complex but, from the way it was presented, Shadow of the Colossus deserves at least an honorable mention.

Fun fact: I've played about 95% of the games mentioned in this thread. First time it happens, usually people throw the weirdest games left and right but this time I can be proud of my geeky backdrop of knowledge ;)

I don't see why Max Payne doesn't get more love. For my money, no other game story has even come close (unless you count the Interactive Fiction games of the '80s). I mean, come on, Borderlands? F.E.A.R.? Did F.E.A.R. even HAVE a story? I absolutely loved that game, but it certainly wasn't because of the story. At least through the first half of the game, every level's objective was "find what's-his-face." But maybe I was just too enthralled with the gameplay to notice (likely).
Combining the medium of the graphic novel with a video game was pure genius and was executed to perfection.
I will now dismount my box of soap.
Carry on.

Planescape Torment

After playing that, practically all video game-told stories were ♥♥♥♥.

Planescape: Torment

No other game I've played is in the same league when it comes to story.

Star Control 2 has a good story (and a very interesting universe).

I actually loved the story of Crysis 1. People said it was weak and generic and it was but it was a well done military sci fi type thing. I like that ♥♥♥♥ lol.

-Best-
Homeworld
(American McGee's) Alice
Fallout 2
The Void

-Honorary Mention-
Prey: at least the opening bit/first kill was new.
Morrowind: it'd be in the "best" section, but I feel it was a little to open to get enough emphasis on the story.

Max Payne 1 and 2
All Half Life games
Deus Ex
Grand Theft Auto IV (and San Andreas, also Vice City)
Mafia
STALKER series

Still haven't played Mass Effect yet, mostly because I REALLY don't want to play it on my bro's 360. Probably make a great game to play during this summer though, plus Bioware made sure that the PC port was done well.

EDIT: Though about putting Crysis up there as well, but that's because people were going to get mad at me. Therfore, Honorable Mention!

Stalker SOC (i kinda knew the plot by guessing it, but it was still and big slap in the faic :P)
Half life 1 + 2
Call of cthulu
Fear + extraction point- That was one of the most epic games I have ever played.
Mafia was great
DooM- Even if there is virtually no storyline, You really where a DooMMarine, you really where blasting demons from hell! And the ending baffled me :(
Call of Duty 4 and 2 (4 was like a movie, 2 reminded of The Longest Day)
Ghost Recon original

Can't really think of anything else :/

I'm continually amazed when I see Diablo 2 listed among games with good stories.

Good stories boil down to the following basic sequence:

Introduce a character. The character has a Big Problem. To overcome that problem, the character must break it down into Little Problems and solve enough of them until he can approach the Big one. At the end, the character either solves the Big problem or the Big problem solves the character.

In D2, your character, what ever class he may be, has no stake in anything. He just shows up, makes a bunch of pithy statements, and kills a lot of critters in the wilderness. In the end, his patron angel, Tyrael, turns right around and does the very thing the hero stopped Baal from doing (destroy the Worldstone). And then he goes home for a well-deserved rest.

There are no consequences for the heroes having done the villain's work for him. Nothing is solved. Nothing is even apparently affected. The moral is: A Difference Which Makes No Difference Is No Difference.

Dungeon Siege 1 & 2 each has a good story. Liesure Suit Larry IV has a good story. Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel has a passable story. Freedom Force has a halfway decent story. Even Plants Vs. Zombies follows the basic form to some extent.

Diablo 2 is just pointless mayhem for its own sake.

(In My Opinion.)

Red Dead Redemption
Mafia II
GTA IV
Mass Effect series
Dragon Age
...and of course any Fallout games, I love the way each town or place has it's own unique story and depth!
