Daw. I thought this was going to be about your grandma.

Teh Grammy's are pretty lame and have zero bearing on my musical choices. They represent everything that is wrong with the music industry.

Slight thread derail, but has anyone seen the long list of all grammy awards? Obviously the awards show only does the big awards, but still...

There's so many (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Grammy_Award_categories) genres! But my beef is how pitifully small the "Dance" category is. First off it lumps any kind of "techno" in there, and then there are only a total of two awards in the category. Country has like 10 separate awards, and Gospel has around 20! American Roots? I'm American, and I have no idea what that means.

This is why the Grammy's are a joke. The categories were relavent half a century ago.

I don't listen to any of the terrible new music that is created today so why would i watch the awards that celebrate it?

Because not all of it is terrible? Although that's still not a reason to watch it.

I heard names of some of the winners today on the radio and most of them I had never heard of.

Same with the Academy Awards (movies) people. Teh sux.

And Bieber didn't win "Best New Artist" - some young female bass player won it - and some Bieber fans (or someone) trashed he Wikipedia page in revenge. Pretty Lame IMO.

Pretty much these.

It's a facade for all the same sounding generic mainstream crap that gets pumped out every year, so that those 'artists' feel validated by making whatever 'music' the record label wants them to make.

It makes the drones that buy into this crap feel validated because their favorite 'artist' suddenly means something because they got some award based on popularity, and not actually on musical merit.

Fake awards for fake musicians for the most part.

There should be more voting by "The People" not by the producers and what not they choose for the rewards.

I only wanted to see who won the Record and Song of the year.

I was disappoint.

I hold the Grammy's in the same regard as the Academy Awards - that is, I have no regard for them. Thanks to the internet, self-indulging award shows are becoming irrelevant. The audience can now choose what they like without being told what it should be.

This is why I entirely don't understand the Spike Video Game Awards. Not that I watch them - but does anyone??

Grammys - music's version of the Oscars. Just as meaningless and stupid.

I gave up on the oscars for good the year that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon won best soundtrack over Gladiator :o

Not sure if I'd agree with that as a great example of the Oscars being unfair. Listen to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n16h16jtGw). Gives you goosebumps..
Might as well put it in the context of the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvoWL5Aq90w (spoiler alert!)

Granted, I've seen Gladiator, which was an epic movie in itself, but I have the CT:HD OST and not the Gladiator and I'm sure plenty of people found the same to be true. That's not to say that the Gladiator's OST was worse, but more that they are apples & oranges and a direct comparison is hard to make. Both soundtracks appealed to a lot of people - something we can probably agree on.

However, I will make a point of re-watching The Gladiator and maybe pay more attention to the soundtrack this time. With all the metal clanging and people shouting in that movie, the score naturally gets a less prominent role than an artistic martial arts movie.

That's actually an example of a GOOD decision... CTHD was a better movie in pretty much everything.

Well obviously things like this are a lot of personal taste as well. And that was the straw that broke the camel's back! I also watched some of the movies that won more oscars than any others just because of that fact, and wasn't impressed. And I noticed that not a single one of my personal top rated movies won oscars for things like acting or directing.

But back to Gladiator vs CTHD - http://alturl.com/jzw8t (edit: stupid forums hearting out the random string of letters in the youtube url) This song is from the second soundtrack CD Gladiator: More Music From the Motion Picture that was released a year after the first soundtrack CD. I think it speaks for itself that people wanted to hear more :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHAvjaHtlMA - here's one of the more popular tracks from the first CD.

I have to say, I did enjoy the CTHD music...the percussion backing for the fight between Zihi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh was my personal favourite. But I found the stringed instrument themes to be a bit too plain and repetitive for me to have a desire to listen to them on their own. Good music, but I personally rate Gladiator as one of the best movie soundtracks ever written.

But of course this is subjective, so there is no point arguing about it...I guess that's a big problem with oscars and grammys really, it all depends on taste. I think the people who judge for the BAFTA's have tastes that are more similar to mine than the OSCAR judges!

That's actually an example of a GOOD decision... CTHD was a better movie in pretty much everything.

I agree that CTHD was a far superior movie overall, I only watched Gladiator once (Russell Crowe *shudder*). However the oscar in question was specifically for the soundtrack, and it's only the comparative merits of these two soundtracks that I am looking at here. :)

spacebug, when on SPUF, don't shy away from ♥[/color]♥♥♥♥♥♥.com/"]URL (http://[color="#FF66FF) shortening (http://bit.ly/) services (shorturl.com)..

And while it's true that people have their unique tastes, I think a lot of of us would agree that a number of Oscar Best Picture-winning movies really don't necessarily deserve them even over their other nominees. Slumdog Millionaire & Crash come to mind, out of the more recent ones.

Ahh, the cool kids who dislike the mainstream by virtue of it being the mainstream talking about award shows being a means for people to pat themselves on the back. Of course they don't realize that they are falling into exactly the same trap: both sides think they are right. Problem is that in virtually every situation one encounters where two sides are convinced that they are correct one is forced to conclude that both sides are utterly WRONG.

I'll leave it to you to find the way out.
