View Full Version : Mutation Idea: Silent Movie

I'm not familiar with how coding works so I propose an idea.

My idea is based on the old black and white horror films.

What defines them the most? The silence.

Left4Dead is a game heavily based on listen to your enemies to know what kind of mob they are take that away and you find yourself spending more time looking for the infected then you do listening for them. Which is a change of pace for the ideals of L4D

So how does it work?

First off its VS mode, There is no voice communication only the chat window can be used, There is no music to the game, or enemy sounds, just pure awkward silence. Along with this the game is completely black and white just like if you were about to die your just not about to die. The idea of this Mutation is "Lets take away 1 key feature of this game and make you focus on a lesser key feature."

Possibly optional ideas are, You cannot see your team mates, survivors or Infected, So you must always keep an eye on them with just simply physical eye sight.

I just think no sound is boring. I wouldn't mind if the Special Infected had no audio cues, though.

I can see a point where no sound can be a bit iffy.

Let's just remove all enemy vocals, commons and specials alike, and call it "Silent But Deadly". It will be glorious!

I play games with Closed Captions, because my hearing isn't awesome.
I'd prefer to not be at any more of a disadvantage than I already am.

I had thought about a black and white mode, like death's door, but you see in B&W the whole time. Though now it would be too similar to the current mutation. Wish they had done that, playing the whole game in B&W would be kind of cool.

Isnt that the same as getting incapacitated twice without healing, turning off your speakers and playing on realism mode?

no, because you dont actually die if you get incapped once or twice, commons dont do absurd amounts of damage, and the witch isnt instakill

i do think it's going a little too far. no infected cues alone is HUGE. just image turning the corner and HOLY ♥♥♥♥ TANK

when I saw the title, I thought you meant something like this:

http://www.neonjelloevangelist.com/2009/11/flapper-killer.html

So it would be all silent with dust and scratches and black and white, but with old timey music over top. That would be fun!

Yeah I played the "mutations unlocked" mutation that was a bit like this.

Might have been "silent buy deadly" which is ♥♥♥♥ing stupid name.
Tanks were ♥♥♥♥♥, because you couldn't hear them ahead, and there wasn't any music. Can't remember if they roared, but they usually took me by surprise a bit.

There is no music to the game

but silent movies were projected with someone playing music..

Hell I get that sometimes just from normal play. *turn corner to the bathroom and Nick freaks out going "HOLY #()$* BIG FREAKING ZOMBIE!*

That sounds fairly boring. Also, you're talking about taking away communication in a game that's entirely based on communication. Gameplay > Aesthetics to be honest. Games aren't movies and don't work the same way as movies.

So I invest in a decent 5.1 headset, GTX285 graphics card, Quad CPU and nice widescreen monitor.......just to go back to a silent, B&W game???

Errr.....let me think about this.....No thanks.

If you want that Old Skool horror movie look to the game just put film grain up full and switch your cans (headphones) to mono.

For added realism get a family member to squish and squash an empty crisp packet (chips to those in the states) over your shoulder.

Not only will this give it that grungy look but your frames will plummet and it will seem that you are watching an old movie on a creaky projector. Job done :D

Oh and you will die....a lot ;)

with the greatest respect OP: this does not float my boat and seems like something one would come up with after copious amounts of alchohol and/or "naughty substances" ;)

Honky tonk piano music can play the whole time, and while you CAN use typing to communicate, it does make the screen fill up with a big black screen with the message written in fancy lettering in the center for a few seconds.

(In all fairness, a versus mode where the infected make NO noise but do glow a little would be cool, emphasising stealth on the Infected side and attention to detail on the Survivor's side).

I have young kids, and sometimes (rarely, but it happens) I happen to play with the sound off, when I need to be quiet but can`t put on a headset because they`re sick and need to hear them throw up (for example).

You'd be surprised how the lack of both relevant and distracting sound can allow for much more focused gaming. I can`t say I am better without the sound, because I do miss a lot of cues, but I`m much quicker reflex-wise. I suggest you try it.

And it has nothing to do with better PC performance, because I only mute my speakers, I don`t turn it off anywhere in the game.

I like everything except the Black and White. It's unnecesary

and instead of silence it should be that happy 1920s piano music playing

Starting at 30 seconds is what im talking about

Removing all the infected sound cues like an awesome idea, as long as you leave in the actual communication between teammates. I'd make the game much more intense, but hopefully not rage-inducing.

I think horror novels are the really scary thing, I think the next mutation should make l4d a text-based game, like Zork!

You know, I'm gonna mute my in-game sound, set my graphics card's options to display only black and white, turn up grain and play tons of silent movie music in the background. That'll be amazing.

You need to make a video of it. With the interjection of big text cards.

<old timey piano music as the group moves through Dark Carnival>

<text card>

"Oh bother! That Coach is one of those hungry vagabonds!"

<Coach jumping around one of the food stands>

"Do not blame me, sir! I have been waiting for a horsecollar salami for a fortnight!"

<A Tank appears>

"Oh the Tank is back with his skullduggery!"
