Heyas dear Steam forum dwellers!

I just thought I'd inform you on some pretty sweet stuff. EverQuest just launched a new server today called Fippy Darkpaw (yeah, the suicide Gnoll in the Qeynos from days of yore). It is a classic server with only game content from the first three expansions. Everyone who ever had an account in EQ is free to try the game out for 15 days.

And only three expansions, is that a bad thing? Hell no! :D It is the best thing that has happened to EQ in years. The game went back to its roots, which is what made it popular in the first place. Magical universe, where in small gathering spots people will meet and go about slaying some beasts and orcs (ahh, Crushbone, my favorite zone ever). There is no Plane of Knowledge that allows you to teleport anywhere, there is no super easy exping like there is now.

Once again, EQ is about challenge, fun and playing as a team. When was the last time you died in groups at under lvl 10 in a MMO? Yeah, not since grouped in orc hill next to Kelethin.

There is a downside though...the server is so popular that it is nearly impossible to login. That means that there is a demand for it (finally SOE realized it, been waiting for years) and they are going to try and release a second classic server tomorrow, Vulak'Aerr.

See you in-game. In case you are wondering, I will most likely be a Wood Elf druid called Lilanye or a rogue called Yinlawen. ;) Feel free to poke me in-game or add me on Steam for some fun together (add on steam: Mazena86).

Now, I think I'll go get some sleep so I can feel the nostalgia tomorrow.

Edit: My bad, the servers have zero expansions enabled. And wow, it really feels like you're back in '99. Except without the horrible old UI. The crowded newbie zones are back, and so is the killstealing. My gawd...

People grovelled and begged to recapture the old-school EQ experience, and that includes killstealing. :) There is one major difference however, you will see a lot more roleplaying on the progression servers, mainly in the guise of 10-year veterans RP'ing being noobs again.

I am very tempted by this - however, will the server eventually expand to have POP? Because if it will, screw that, I'm not playing :P

it is a time-locked progression server. after 90 days of completing certain tasks in the classic game (which i think has already been met) then the 90 day countdown begins. after 90 days, a vote is put out to the server asking if they want to open the next expansion (Kunark). if the majority vote yes, it gets opened.

repeat, though this time it is 60 days. so once certain tasks are completed (not sure what they are), 60 days later the server is given the chance to unlock Velious. Then PoP, etc, until it gets caught up. it will take over a year and a half if everyone votes yes to get to where the regular servers are.

and let me say - experience is slooooooooow, just how i like it. ;)

If I could log into a server with only up to kunark or maybe velius with NO progression I might think about it.

Not going to waste time making a chaacter and levelling it up only to have abunch of people vote to progress the server back towards the problem expansions because 'they're bored with whats there now/having to walk places dur hurr' when they could just make characters on an up to date server with all the dumb probems that killed EQ1.

A year or so back I looked at some of the EQ emulated servers fans had put up. Many gave a pretty authentic old-time EQ experience. It might be worth looking into again one day.

If you're going to necro a several-month-old thread, you might want to have a clue what you're talking about first. The progression servers are for EQ1 only. It is EQ2 which is now F2P. Kunark and Destiny of Velious are EQ2 expansions and have nothing to do with the EQ1 progression servers.

I see no mention of EQ2 or F2P, merely the Kunark and Velious expansions..
