As the title says, I've downloaded the demo, and when I try to install it I get a window to show progress of installation, and then my computer reboots itself. The demo is not installed. This error is repeatable.

To add more detail to my problem.
When installing, Steam presents the small window saying:
Performing 1st Time Setup
Installing .Net Framework (step 1 of 3)
.Net then presents it's own window to show:
File Security Verification
(eventually) Completed successfuly
Followed by:
Installation progress
Installing .Net Framework 4 Client Profile
Followed by:
Installing .Net Framework 4 Extended
Followed by rebooting my computer ...

Strange, on the 4th attempt at installing the demo, I get as far as step 2 of 2 (it had stopped asking me to install .net) and then I get to see a cursor that definitely looks from out of the game and a black screen, followed by a .Net error:
"Unhandled exception has occured in a component in your application. If you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
... then I clicked continue, the game had minimised, so I clicked it's icon in the taskbar and lo and behold I'm in the game.
If anything was to kill PC gaming for us, it is all this ♥♥♥♥ we have to put up with.

As far as rebooting your computer:
The developers elected to have the .NET install portion reboot automatically after installation (without giving the user the option to 'restart later'.) IMO, this is extremely bad form and shows a real lack of understanding of PC software development/deployment on the part of the delevopers. Auto-rebooting is simply not done (anymore).
Additionally, I doubt the reboot is even necessary. I had the exact same experience as you and I'm certain I had a current .NET 4.0 framework installed before-hand.
Blah. I'm :(, was hoping this game would rock.

Install / Repair .NET 4.0 manually. Then the game should stop trying to update when you start it.
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=9cfb2d51-5ff4-4491-b0e5-b386f32c0992&displaylang=en)
Worked for me :D
Yeah, the .NET install is really badly coded- you can actually cancel it and the install continues perfectly fine so long as your .NET was upgraded to 4.0 and in good repair. Hopefully next update they'll be able to have it optionally restart instead and fix the ability to cancel out.
So in short: Let it reboot once then cancel that step next time, the install will continue.

Yup, same thing happens to me. I shouldn't have to interrupt an installer and cancel it out just to get the game to run.
This looks bad on Steam for even ok'ing this type of publishing.
I'm liking Steam less and less these days.
After the 3rd time of the demo trying to install .Net 4, I repaired using .Net 4 directly from MS and the demo is still trying to repair and still reboots automatically.
