Hey guys. Today I was bored to hell when I decided to play some flash games on the net. I went to this webbsite called funny-games.biz and I played there untill i got bored again. I started cheatengine and began to hack the crap out of the flashgame then after a while of hacking/changing values my friend "Tokiz" told me to join his Beta server on gmod. I forgot to turn cheatengine off and I joined his server. Can this get me VAC banned?
I've heard that VAC gets triggered IF you change a value in a game, I didnt change any values on gmod. Can i still get vac banned or what? Please tell me :(

Dunno though. I think as long as you didn't alter any memory that gmod was using, you should be ok.

Running any memory editor while joining a VAC secure server could possibly get some games on your account VAC banned. Especially such a well-known one...
If it happens, you'll know why.

All this banning is really getting out of control.I hate cheats but sometimes you might want to try something out alone or with friends just to see...AND that constitutes a ban or permaban?? I would some how get my money back on said game. jmo

If you just want to try something out in a VAC Secure game, you set up a local hosting of the game in question and make it not VAC Secure.

Out of hand?
VAC has worked like this for the past 5 years. Nothing been getting out of hand with bans lately.
Also you gain nothing from trying cheats or similar programs.

You wont get banned unless it hooks to the game process or stuff like that.

If you wanted to do cheat like things. Host your own server and make your own server mods that do things like you want the cheats to do.
and disable VAC on the server.

cheat engine allows u to choose which process to inject. U didn't choose hl2.exe, so u wont get banned

Great so you are saying cheating is ok? Just play the games they were meant to be played. What is this constant obsession of having to hack or cheat in game? It baffles me

I didn't see him say that at all, all he said was some people may get something out of it...
Nothing in his post implies cheating is ever okay, don't put words in people's mouthes.

My question to him is a result of how I interpret his response to Zefar. I didn't put any words in his mouth. Zefar states that you gain nothing from cheats...I see mikieson's response I would say that's up to each individual. as an affirmative that its ok to use cheats programs and other similar programs. Im just asking for clarification from him. Just like you don't see him saying he condones using cheating programs, well I do. Im sure he can answer himself...you dont need to do it for him

I want to answer for myself. I enjoy toying with software in ways the developer never intended. Exploring what can be done with a game is always interesting, to me at least. What is and is not considered cheating is also subjective. For example; a server admin in TF2 or CS:S toggling no-clip/no-collide mode for himself, if he is participating, would be considered cheating while enabling the same mode, on a public server, in G-Mod is not cheating and has a default key-bind. There are also exploits, which take place in the game's code itself such as cycling weapons to reload them faster (I haven't played CS:S in a long time, so it might have been fixed/changed but I remember that), some are cheats, some are not, and many depend on the context in which they are used. I would never use Cheat Engine, or any other program, to try and gain an unfair advantage in online games, and that is just me speaking, but using it to mess around in single player mode is enjoyable for me. I am also very interested in how programs and games work from the ground up and I'm interested in learning x86 assembly language, so something like Cheat Engine for me is a really cool tool for fun and for learning.
You really don't have to look far for in-game commands that can be used as cheats as well as just for fun. I've played through Fallout 3 and the DLC packs. Is it wrong for me to use the console to create all sorts of situations? I don't really want to fire up mod tools just to watch Deathclaws and Albino-Radscorpions duke it out while some Wasteland Raiders get caught in the middle. :p
tl;dr: Cheating is when you try to gain an unfair advantage over other players, not gaining an unfair advantage of AI constructs even if it takes out all challenge.

That, my friend, is a slippery slope. Cheating is cheating is cheating. As soon as you justify that it's ok against 'AI Constructs' just not ok against 'other players' you start blurring the statute of limitations. Eventually, we might come to "Well, it's OK on 'unranked' servers, as long as we aren't using it on the ranked ones". Once you start justifying something, you allow that something an in. We don't want that 'in' here.

How can cheating against AI make you want to cheat versus other players?
It's like saying someone that can justify shooting a target in a shooting range is going to want to shoot another person.
