So, Justin Bieber sold a lock of his hair on ebay. It was for charity, but still. Who in their right mind would spend $40,668 on a lock of hair....

Reminds me of when Jeremy from pure pwnage sold a lock of his hair. He got like 10,000 or something crazy.

I know this is for a charity, but god damn. $40,668 for his hair, seriously? What will these people want next, the air he breathes?

Haha. Almost reminds me of a certain Valve game (cough TF2) and the trading system (cough unusuals selling for $750).

It was actually worth $0.40668

So TF2 MannConomy is happening in real life?

Not really much different from the whole Backstreet Boys/N*sync craze, except for the ability of the fans to talk about their obsessions all over the relatively new and much more accessible social networks.

That said, I wish I could make $40K every time I got a haircut.

Something that the TF2 crazies would have.

The buyer will meet Justin Beiber AND ELLEN DEGENERES.

Who doen't want to spend that amount to meet Ellen?

The buyer probably just want to meet Ellen and don't give a f*** about Justin Pre-Bieber.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
Please don't call someone ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ when you can't properly spell the word.
Just invalidates your point.
(It's a D, not a T)

Even if you just do it to bypass the word filter... don't.

What has music and society come to?

I've been asking myself the same question.
Teenage Girls love bad music, and iPads.
Makes absolutely no sense...

The buyer is likely a collector that believes he'll be able to get a fair bit more than that once Bieber's fame grows larger.

The collector market, much like stock trading, is more of a legalized Pyramid scheme than a rational assessment of a product's value, so in a world where a lens shade (ie, piece of plastic to cover a lens) sells for over $5k, the fact that a lock of hair from a rising celebrity gets $40k is hardly surprising.

Actually, Bieber apparently gave his hair to Ellen DeGeneres, who sold it on eBay and donated the proceeds to charity. The better question people should be asking is: why would Bieber give his hair to her in the first place?

Haha, this is what I'm talking about. I'm all for charity, but I can justify how anyone could possibly spend $40000 on a lock of hair

Cauz that's all she wanted for her birthday. So Bieber tweeted her saying that she would get her gift.

That's the story for realz.

Ellen does this a lot. She uses celebrities to sign and do things to help raise money for charity. One of the previous items was a signed basketball by Zac Efron which went for several thousand dollars. IIRC.

40k is a bit of a shocker but that's also about how much people got for designing TF2 items a few months back not knowing they would even make a penny.

I'm sure it's already been said. However it's mostly because it's being sold by Ellen.. it's for charity.. and less about it being his Hair. While it's part of that factor it's mostly the first two. Will almost guarantee that most of the bidders are rich friends of Ellen.. thats how celebrities do charity. If you look at the website it says "For Pre Approved Buyers" which solidifies what I was saying. Was just a bunch of rich people having fun.

Well atleast they can clone him from his hair when it comes around. That's the main thing we're worried about here.

Reminds me of the guy selling a rock that fell on his house during the Christchurch quake, for charity of course. Currently at $NZ8000 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Outdoor-garden-conservatory/Landscaping-materials/Stones-rocks/auction-357989041.htm).
