View Full Version : Anyone else sick of TF2 tie-ins?

Seriously, does every major title have to have one now? Shogun 2 is one of my most anticipated titles of all time. TF2 is one of my most despised titles of all time. The two should not be mixed.

Steam, this is weak, very very weak, the TF2 items.

Though, the Total War Collection rules, I'll give it a thought. :)

I agree. I used to play TF2 a lot and I used to enjoy it. Now, I pretty much hate it. A lot of it has to do with everything since the Engineer update. These stupid item tie-ins are just the icing on the cake.

Shogun 2 does not need stupid TF2 items to get sales. More over, it takes away from the overall seriousness of the title, in my opinion. Hell, most of these tie-in offers are games that will do well enough on their own without stupid TF2.

So yeah, I'm sick of it altogether. To the point that I'm giving my TF2 items to one of my buds and uninstalling that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.

don't buy the game.

it really doesn't matter what we think, they are going to keep doing it.
people are spending money and that is enough for them.

i don't play tf2 any longer, sadly.
it's turned into a marketing crap shoot.

I used to play TF2 alot. Still played when they started giving one hat or another.

But now... Everytime I try to play I go like "Wtf is this?", they should give me a turn off button for all hats and new items, just keep the basic ones.

Guys what the hell? You wanted a Steam bonus. They gave you a Steam bonus. TF2 is still one of the most played game on Steam. Either take the promo or not.

Either play the game or not. There are servers with weapon restriction you know.

PLUS you can buy the TW collection also for 67 bucks now. That includes Shogun 2.

I am just tired of tf2 updating all the time. Its like every day and I rarely play the game.
I like to have it installed just in case though.

Seriously, what is the problem here? If you play TF2, this is a bonus for you. If you don't, then this has ZERO negative effect for you. And I call BS on it taking seriousness away from the title...these bonuses do absolutely nothing in your game of Shogun 2. Stop finding things to complain about for the sake of complaining.

If anything, be angry that steam doesn't have the limited edition.

MWMJoker

Guys what the hell? You wanted a Steam bonus. They gave you a Steam bonus.

I don't ever remember seeing anything, anywhere regarding a Steam bonus for Shogun 2. Or any of the other games offering one for that matter.

Enlighten me, please. I'm not being an ♥♥♥ even though it'll come across that way. If there was a massive community push for pre-order TF2 item bonuses, I'd like to see the evidence. I mean if that's the case, then I'll shut my trap now. I still don't like it, but at least then it won't seem like a shameless money grab on both devs parts.

As for my comment about seriousness, perhaps I was a bit off kilter. Just irritated is all. It doesn't detract from the overall game of Shogun 2, no. Just irritates the hell out of me is all.

I doesnt take anything away from Shogun.

I do believe that the TF2 items are a way to give a small little bonus to devs for using Steamworks. I wouldn't be surprised if the same cross game promotion would be done for Brink.

Of course, it does cheapen the TF2 experience

/signed. sick and tired of the tired ♥♥♥ tf2 crap. i actually had fun playing this before the stupid ♥♥♥ increasingly less team oriented crap they introduce to the item fortress/hat fortress. now i have uninstalled it and likely wont reinstall this and leave it under the "crap that USED TO Be fun to play" header. Shogun 2 will, as have all total war titles imho, be awesome.

I also must admit that it becomes just "too much" these days .... so many games unlock some ingame content in TF2 if you pre-order them ...

At Shogun 2 I was going for the retail Collectors Edition (Samurai Statue, yay!), pre-ordered it MONTHS ago ... and now, 1 week before Release they come up "this" here? Srsly?! I personally AM a regular TF2 player, and I honestly begin to feel mocked by Valve now. Same was with Rift: The 2 unlocks locked pretty cool (which is a rare thing for TF2 items), but I'm not gonna go for a game that I'd never have bought otherwise (don't even like the whole genre, MMORPGs). Of coure, they wanna sell copys as well, but still ... :-/. Especially as a loyal, high-value customer I would expect a bit more.

At least make them available in the Mann Co. Store as well, so there's at least an alternative OPTION to get that stuff (not saying I'd go for them, I'm just saying) ...

I do think all these promo items are a bit much but geez you people are overly dramatic. TF2 has remained one of my favorite games since its release over 3 years ago and one of the best online multiplayer shooter I have ever played. Yea the items cheapen the game but by no means have they ruined it. It really jarates me off how some people quit tf2 simeply becuase of some cosmetic items which have zero impact on the gameplay itself other than the aesthetics.

Anyhow, I kinda like the promo items this time around unlike the past ones. Total War is among one of my favorite series and the items are a nice bonus.

No, it's a nice incentive and it helps the game continue to evolve.

Its gimmicky bs. This makes me glad I pre-ordered from gamersgate because they give rome for free PLUS 15 dollars back. I hate tf2 more n more. First the december contest tie in to tf2 then this crap.

I love the TF2 items, so there!

I second that.

Although the usefulness of new items are always debatable, they all come from the community and are made with care. Valve could be doing a lot worse with this game, or even nothing at all, I'm just happy to see their still interested in keeping it alive with regular updates and new content.

I agree that the TW franchise doesn't need the promo help, but it certainly doesn't hurt to expose the game to people who otherwise wouldn't consider trying it.

I quit TF2 in disgust when they gave out those "buy a 2.50$ key to open it" xmass presents, so the TF2 advertising stunts only serve to bring back that feeling of disgust everytime I see it.
I will buy this game when the TF2 crap is no longer bundled with it.

Just send a ticket to steam service about canceling your preorder and get a retail limited version instead. Should be cheaper as well:)

"TF2 is one of my most despised titles of all time." i totaly disagree with that, tf2 is awesome but the items for preordering is just gay, because others are offering rome tw, which at least is like $10 right there

The preorder bouns items are homosexual?

I would rather have TF2 bling-bling then exclusive in game TW units. TF2 has simply lost its way. If hats are an alternative to nickle and dime DLC, I welcome them. Besides, this way I can simply wait until a GOTY edition is released complete with all the upcoming expansions and custom units.

I might consider paying full retail if the game offered modding tools.

It's just silly now. Everyone (Tf2 players, The TW/TF2 developers/publisher) except the actual players and community of S2:TW themselves benefit from this. TF2 and TW have very little in common so it makes little sense to try to entice people from TF2 to buy the game.

At least when Monday Night Combat did the same if you owned TF2 you also got bonuses for the actual game you were buying and not this "spend $80 for Tf2 hats" nonsense every second game has for a pre-order bonus now.

SpartanGrug

The TF2 crap can go eat some dog waste.

Guess that's what happens when developers go from developers to publishers.

If you make your purchasing decisions based on what TF2 items you get out of it, something is wrong with you. I sorely doubt it's a marketing strategy to garner additional purchases. They're just an added bonus for pre-ordering for those who were looking to purchase the game anyway.

Not sure what everyone is complaining about. You don't want the items, then just ignore them and go about your merry way. Simple as that.

This is a steamworks game; so buying it from retailer will still ensure the key is registered on steam. I see no reason to complain; now if it wasn't a steamworks game and they only offered TF2 items, then yeah - I see your point.

Also there's other Steam alternatives:

Impluse
Gog
D2D

Feel free to flock to their clients, you'll never be forced to pre-order a game with TF2 items.

I've only really used D2D and Impluse; I don't think they compare to steam, sadly.

Niscimble
03-14-2011, 10:40 AM
They should not give bonuses for games that have absolutely nothing to do with the game you are pre-ordering. Does it occur to anyone that maybe someone doesn't own TF2, therefore gets no bonus at all? Not to mention the whole concept of hats is reetarded.

louis0415
03-14-2011, 10:53 AM
The hats may have no value to you, but it may to a person who has TF2, and thus may sway the purchase in Steam's direction.

Steam, like all other game retailers out there, will want to push out as many copies themselves as possible, so they ran a TF2 promo to "catch" TF2 players. Likewise, other retailers such as Gamestop and amazon has the limited edition to "catch" fans of Total War who wants everything from the start.

If you don't own TF2, you have the choice of not buying it from Steam. Steam isn't the exclusive retailer for this game. If you don't fancy the hats, or aren't a TF2 player, you can take $10 off by preordering on D2D, and get Rome Total War: Gold Edition.

Lots of people here are complaining simply because of the hats. They complain due to the fact that they know the hats are popular and/or they want them, but can't afford them. The hats themselves, as Niscimble said, has nothing to do with Shogun 2, so if you're buying Shogun 2 for Shogun 2, then you're essentially not missing anything.

03-14-2011, 11:42 AM
I personally don't hate it, but I don't play the game either, so, like Ardbug said, I wanted a pre-order that's more useful, like say start with extra money in a campaign, get a new unit, or make the game like 10% off if you pre-order it(like Portal 2 :D)

TheInsaneDump
03-14-2011, 11:45 AM

And what exactly would that be?

That would be something like the bonuses that all the retail limited edition people get:

Exclusive ninja clan - the Hattori clan are masters of the Iga-ryu ninjutsu - a unique collection of martial skills and guerrilla techniques. This additional in-game faction is only available in the Limited Edition and includes the most powerful battlefield ninja units.

Extra historical scenario - The Battle of Nagashino saw an alliance between the Oda and Tokugawa clans clashing against the legendary Takeda clan in 1575. Takeda was ultimately defeated but, as in all Total War battles, victory lies in your hands and by playing one of these three factions you can repeat history... or even rewrite it!

Special armour for your avatar - this complete set of armour will make your General's avatar stand out on the battlefield and will reward you with the Bad Omen retainer that affects morale to enemy ashigaru (foot soldier) units, giving you a competitive advantage online.

Bank account of XP for your avatar - only the Limited Edition owners will be able to start their General's avatar at a higher level, with instant access to one upgrade point to spend on special skills or traits.

Good point. Was not aware of a Limited Edition preorder. I agree then, strange that a Steam preorder would not garner the limited edition. It'll be DLC I'm sure.

The D2D and Gamersgate preorder aren't considered Limited Editions either. It would appear those bonuses are for boxed purchases only.

It is stupid, BUT, idiots really want those hats. Therefore, you buy the game (only if you want it) keep the hat until it becomes tradeable, wait a bit, see the value increase, sell it to someone for metal/keys or, if you like real-world money. A lot of people sell TF2 items for actual money, so it's not exactly a bad thing to get a free TF2 hat with a game. It doesn't detract from the seriousness of a game, as a previous poster has said, that's a very childish attitude to take.

1) Buy game
2) Don't give a damn about the hat
3) ????
4) PROFIT!

Oh and TF2 is still the most fun you can have online, daft hats/weapons/updates etc aside.

The reason this thread was here in the first place was that Shogun 2 (when pre-ordered on Steam) would give away items to have in TF2. Items like the Katana and Kabuto Helm (I think the Demoman can use those two items), so please let this thread die or be locked it serves no purpose anymore. Just a center of confusion for people who didn't read this thread before Shogun 2 was released. :o
