Failed to connect. (GS)

I get this message whenever i try to connect to a server. What should i do?

This is apparently a random occurrence, because both me and my brother are on the same LAN, but he can't connect to any games yet I can.

The only notable difference between our computers is that he's running Vista x64, and I'm running Windows 7 x64. We are both connected (via wired) through a switch, both running the game through Steam, both trying to connect to my friend's game (down the street). I've tried port forwarding with no luck (didn't think that was the problem, but was worth a shot).

NOTE: The error he's getting is "Failed to join game (GS)".

Same issue here. I looked at the gamespy website and they had a list of ports that needed to be opened but after opening them all I still get the same "Failed to join game (GS)". The list of tcp ports was 6667 3783 27900 28900 29900 29901 13139 6515 6500 in case anyone is interested.

If you play Rome Total War Gold multiplayer please respond to this thread with an affirmative and whether or not you use a router please.

I play RTW gold edition, non steam, and my friend plays the steam version and we can not connect. i get, host not resonding message and he gets, a can not connect to host message.
I use a d-link router, my friend connect via a 3G dongle thingy.
I have only tried useing the mutiplayer menu in game,he also. I tried to connect to a random unlocked game in the game list but got the same message.

We both play men of war assault squad, online with no problems at all.

So yes, any help with this would be great. Thanks.
