View Full Version : Homefront, pre-install, and the refund process

I'm starting to have doubts as whether purchasing the game on Steam was a good idea. I recently found out that install most likely won't be allowed until after the release date hits, which I'm not too happy about for various reasons. Why is Steam holding back on pre-install when other DD sites like Direct2Drive are allowing their customers the option?

So I'm attempting to get a refund. I realize that it's probably too late for that to be a viable reality, but I suppose it depends on how quickly Steam support gets back to me. Can anyone tell me how long the refund process takes? Or am I stuck with what I got?

I don't think steam support works on weekends, and it usually takes a day for them to answer as well. So they might not get to your request after release.. Then well DENIED.

Yeah, I figured that will be the case. What a bummer. Steam needs phone support so jackasses like me can get some help on the weekend. :(

You CAN get a refund on a pre-order item, as long as the release date has not passed. Which, unfortunately for you, will be passed by the time you get a reply from Valve. I would try anyway though. I doubt the game will be released on time on Monday, they will probably get to your refund before they get to releasing the game. All games on Steam are released late.

BTW, don't listen to the troll. You CAN do whatever you like with YOUR money.

Lol are people getting this jaratey over this. God damn no wonder developers don't like catering to the PC crowd, they are a bunch of self-entitled crybabies

Entitled? Yes, we are entitled to receiving a good quality product when we PAY FOR IT. You're one of those ignorant type that uses the term "self-entitled" incorrectly. Self-entitlement implies that you have NOT payed for or worked for what you get. If I pay you for a product that does not live up to the implied expectation, then I have every right to complain. If you gave it to me for free, then I have NO right to complain... see how that works?

DAII offered a pre-load, why cant Kaos do the same?

Since there is no pre-load apparently, just don't install it, if they don't get back to you before release. If you install there will be no refund.

Honestly you have already bought the thing and at this late date is it worth the hassle to get it canceled? At this point, whats a few hours downloading. Then again who am I to talk. I buy retail when there is no pre-load so I don't have to download on release day. Just install from disc, activate and play.

(I bought this on D2D and no its not out early, In fact it's out THIRTEEN HOURS later than Steam.)

EDIT; You're right. However the keys will not be out for 13 hours whereas via Steam I can download it within an hour. Steam guys are therefore not losing out.

It's like 2 days before the game comes out. IMO just keep it.

However, had no issues getting a refund for global agenda when requested before the game came out. Requested a refund like 1 week before the game went live.

ok we need to find out which is accurate

Some are reporting here that D2D keys don't release until 13 hrs after release official time (steam)

other forums people are saying the d2d versions files key will release 2 hrs before midnight monday night and you then need to just wait on steam to release their actual play key and can play almost instantly.

I'm just confused as hell now ... lol still havemn't pre ordered because i don't know what's accurate information and what's not.

I'll start off with saying I preordered the game on steam...

Having a preorder while it is nice, I suppose it is up to Steam/D2D to decide to offer one or not.

Steam tends to do it for some AAA titles ( I think BLOPS was preloaded? ) and their own games ( L4D2 )

To go and get a refund at this point over the weekend is silly. I can only see a problem if you live in Australia or have a terrible ISP due to living in the boonies or you can't figure out that DSL is slower than cable.

Plain and simple we are all excited, we all paid our money for a product and we all shall get that product, by purchase we are not entitled to a preorder, it is a bonus for some titles or merely a way to divert bandwith away from steam servers on release day, runoff sentence.

TL-DR Just wait lol

Your absolutely right, go back to wasting hours of your life trying to find an answer to a question that may or may not save you a few hours on release day. It makes perfect sense and to question your logic was foolish. I'm sorry. And cant we all be winners there, where ever there is.

Exactly. Steam has patch hangups as it is, cant imagine how awful it would be from a lesser online distributor. Boxed copy or Steam, anything else is just not worth the hassle in the end.

You do realize that this is a Steamworks game, so no matter where it's purchased from it's registered through Steam, meaning Steam does all the patching regardless.

You cannot refund this because metro 2033 was included and so was the tf2 bandana, those are non refundable. You will basically have to buy metro 2033 and probably the bandana for steam to refund it. Metro is still $40. You should have waited before buying it.

Download a clone DVD, Problem solved. I find it ridiculous that steam does not currently offer a pre-load whilst other digital shops do.

Freyar
03-13-2011, 12:38 PM
Games on Steam typically get unlocked at 10AM PST. If a pre-load isn't offered, it's typically due to some result of negotiations on how to handle it. Even then guys, a pre-load isn't THAT big of a deal here assuming you're an adult. You get your game, you'll be getting it at the same time as everyone else, and a few hours to download the content won't kill you either way.

Even then, I find pre-loading to be more of a pain than it should be as-is. You end up with local decryption having to run, which either fails outright causing you to have to re-download the whole content or it fails partially and runs till it crashes due to an encrypted file.

Patience.

As for the rest of you, it's pretty apparent that Homefront may be attracting the types of players I don't want to have anything to do with. It's going to be a sad gaming experience for me if I have to put up with the kind of immature troglodytes that I've seen posting here. On the other hand, I may get some enjoyment consistently beating the crap out of you losers in multiplayer, so there's that I suppose.

Seriously, do the rest of us a favor and go back to playing MW2. Or better yet, get your mommies and daddies to buy you a Wii so you can concentrate on video games that are more suited to your age group.

It's a steamworks game...so i'm not sure why you are asking for a refund, getting a 3rd party involved can only possibly lengthen the time it takes

D2D can not offer the customers a pre-install for this game either, as what was said above, it is a steamworks game, it requires steam

So, either you pre-order it from steam, and get it right away the exact moment it comes out

Or you pre-order it from another website, hope that they will give the keys out at the exact same time, but in the end, it can only take longer (even if it comes out the exact same time, you have to then find the cd key and put it into steam, though this does not take a whole lot of time, it is technically "longer")

And last, buy it at a local store, this would probably be your best bet for "fastest", the problem with this is, you'll still have to wait till it's released on steam, it will only be faster because you'll be installing it from the disk rather then downloading it

It's entirely up to you, but the typical hostile responses by people surprised by Steam's obligations is just a bit bothersome. This isn't new, this isn't surprising. Releases rarely come out at midnight, and if they do, only retail titles will be unlocked before 10AM (usually a contractual agreement to prevent Steam from dominating the entire marketshare for this particular game.)

I don't know why you've come to expect a pre-load when only a small portion of games sold on Steam have gotten that option in the past.

Never had either of these issues.

I've had it happen often, sadly. gets fixed, but I'm not usually too worried about pre-ordering or not.

Or better yet, get your mommies and daddies to buy you a Wii so you can concentrate on video games that are more suited to your age group.

lol, you play online. if you can't deal with the immaturity of the other people, then maybe its time to take up checkers :)

Personally, all this is just making me really happy that i got it retail. If i wanted to make the drive, i could pick it up tuesday morning (12:01 according to gamestop). So while you're all waiting another 10+ hours, i'll be home from work and playing it.

Welcome to the Steam Forums. Your very first post has added absolutely nothing substantial to the discussion. The future's looking bright for you :p.

No, I honestly just don't understand it, I have a Part time job, and I'm already running short on time to play games...how do you have time to worry over a few hours?

SOooooooo. You want your money back because you are unable to install a game you can not play anyway and you wave to wait for the game to actually release before installing it, like any one else? Like everyone else? Like people without a good internet connection but still want to play the game but have/want to use a disk? Your right, that is unacceptable. no one should have to put up with waiting till after they wake up to play a game.

Seriously? Is that a sale deterring drawback for the PC community? I agree it's a little annoying but I don't think it should be grounds to go through all the trouble to cancel a pre-order so close to release. That kind of reminds me of when my sis wanted a computer but my mother said she had to wait because she didn't want to go that day so my sis through a tantrum and said she didn't want the computer anymore followed by "I HATE YOU, YOUR THE WORST EVER".
