If you got the Steam version and aren't content with just redeeming the "goodies code" in the LoL store and being done with it, here's a relatively simple way to get League of Legends working correctly with Steam (so your "hours played" get counted and so on).

First, download and install the Steam version. Make sure to launch it once, in order to get all the dependencies installed (DirectX and Adobe AIR with updates). Once the LoL updater starts downloading, feel free to abort and quit it (we won't be needing that). Then, exit Steam and download the installer from the LoL webpage. Now, delete the contents of your "Steam\steamapps\common\league of legends" folder, but leave the folder itself there. Using a registry cleaner or anything like that is NOT necessary! When you're done, start the LoL installer you downloaded from their webpage (make sure you've exited Steam, not just minimized it to the tray). Tell the installer to install into the folder you just cleared. When the installer is done installing, start up Steam and launch League of Legends via it. Let it update, and you're good to go!

One last thing you might want to do: under Preferences for League of Legends in the Steam client, make sure to set the updating to "Do not update automatically". Otherwise, you could be forced to reinstall completely someday, should the Steam version get an update.

Note: if you're the kind of person who transfers installed games between computers via the "Create Backup" functionality, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense in this case. Thing is, you will be able to create a backup normally, but after installing from a backup, Steam will check for updates and find out that the version you just installed is different, promptly downloading a 1gb "update" (essentially the whole Steam installer). After that, you still have to do the whole "installing over" thing, so essentially you've just complicated your life with an extra step.

So anyway, that's what I've found out while playing around with LoL, hope it's of some use to someone :)
