View Full Version : Sales that Make You Go "Grrrrr..."

I just bought Sega Classics Pack 4 just a few weeks ago. I've only logged about two and a half hours playing with it...
I only paid $7.50 for the games, and at the time I thought it was a reasonable price. Very reasonable, in fact.

Now, I see that all four packs of Sega games are only $9.99 total.

That's only $2.50 more than I paid for a quarter of those games.

And you can't gift the extra copies...so if I pay another ten bucks, it's like I wasted the $7.50.

I feel like an idiot.

Customers shouldn't feel like idiots. It makes them not want to buy things.

Dude, don't eat yourself up over it, its in the nature of Steam sales. Its a game of can you hold out for it. I hold up on rebuying a lot of games I bought until they go on sale.

I hear ya, man. I guess it stings a little more because I bought Pack 4 when it was on sale...so I didn't think they would have such an insane sale already.

It would have been cool if they at least offered some kind of extra discount for people who already bought one of the packs.

And I guess it could be worse. If I had bought four of these games individually, it would have cost more than buying all four sets.

Don't feel too bad. Pretty much everyone gets burnt like this at some point when buying games, it's just the way it goes. I bet you have had some sweet deals on games before that other people paid full price for? You win some you lose some.

You shouldn't feel like an idiot either. Infact the opposite as you have contributed to Sega releasing more from their back catalogue (and we all know how big that is)...if noone had bought the packs when released then i doubt we would have seen pack 2 onwards, or even the Dreamcast games.

With this sale doing so well (it's the first time i have seen any of the classic packs in the charts) i'm hoping that Sega decide that Steam is a damn good way to make them money and i'm hoping they release more and more on here. Not just the old console games but also the more modern titles like Condemned.

Me, in December: "Killing Floor looks like a pretty decent game. It's got L4D-like elements, it seems fun and it's got this pretty sweet TF2-crossover for both games. But I think I'll wait until the day that the Christmas Event starts, they might put the game on sale."

*on the day of the Christmas Event*

Myself: "OK, the Event has started, I've waited quite a bit for a sale and apparently there isn't one. Oh well, I'll just buy it at the current price then. 25€ then? OK, here, take my money."

*not 30 minutes later*

Steam: "To celebrate the Christmas Event, Killing Floor is now 66% off!"

*one manslaughtering rampage later*

Me: YOU %$£@§%#€§ OF A £@§%# IN THE %$£@§ OF %§$€@£@§€%#€§!! You were just waiting for me to finally buy the game just so you could start your £@§%# sale, weren't you?!

...

So yeah, basically, that's happened to us all, at some point. Don't feel too bad.

Although it would be nice if we could get some kind of warning about these promotions. Maybe a week before or something...

Reading everyone's comments makes me wonder if perhaps some of the Steam deals are too good...or maybe just too good too soon.

You're all correct when you point out that finding something cheaper is just part of life. You expect an item to go on sale eventually. In normal cases, though, there's more of a descent in the price...it's 20% off...then it's 40% off...then it's 60% off over time.

So by the time it's over half off, you can still justify your purchase by telling yourself that it was worth paying more to get two or three months use out of the game.

In this case, though, I'm literally repurchasing ten games for a third of the price I paid for them only a few weeks ago.

In the end, I'm only out $7.50. It's not that big of an issue...and, at the time, I thought $7.50 was a steal.

What's next, though? Will Steam have a super Sega value pack of 80 games for $9.99...and I'll end up buying all of these games over again?

If they keep adding games they probably will have that within a year or so. You just have to not worry about how much you could have saved if you waited. If you get enough enjoyment out of these games for them to be worth the $10, then that's great.

The worst I've been hit was when I bought Fallout 3 GOTY for $50, and three days later it went on a weekend madness sale for 50% off.

The normal thing to do here in UK is if you buy something and it goes on sale within a couple weeks, you get a refund on it and can rebuy it at sale price.

Not sure if it would work on steam, but it's worth trying your luck.

When you buy something in the UK you are accepting the price you paid for it and for this reason no buisness has any obligation to accept a return of an item because it's now on sale and you want the cheaper price.

That's right. Essentially you thought it was worth whatever you paid for it and accepted that at the time of purchase. Unless the product isn't as described, it's unlikely anything can be done. It's just a case of bad luck (which has happened to me plenty). Is one of the reasons why I don't often buy games on steam unless they're on sale (bar new releases which I know I will play).

In the USA it is a little more relaxed than the UK, as the majority of retailers in the USA allow for returns to the point where it is very much expected of retailers and has become part of consumer culture. It's quite different in other countries though.

This is one of the flaws of the digital marketplace I guess. We have to live with it.

Incidentally, Steam is also saying 'Grrrrr' over this sale.

Check out the package details page. At the bottom, they list "Grrrrrrr: -$26.37 USD"!

Also, why did the special go from -75% to -66% today? This is the weirdest steam sale I've seen.
