I have the exact same system you do and I run it perfect.

Try going into the video settings and turning "Unit detail" (I believe) to "Low".

I had the exact same problem, and this helped me immensely.

I'm not sure why, my system is more then capable to support this game maxed; guess it's just an old game, and not fully compatible with modern hardware.

Game crashed when I minimize it too, nothing much you can do about this as far as i've figured, you can still minimize the game when on the main menu though, so I suggest just quicksaving, exiting the game to main menu, then tabbing out.

I actually greatly improved my performance by making it run on one core. Have you tried that?

While I don't all the issues with RTW ya'll do, I do have issues. The (below) single core solution does get repeated as working, but I've never tried it. The 'low then grow' solution has been discussed on several other boards/threads I recall reading over the year. Sucks as it's time consuming, but you might be able to find the sweet spot that way.

It's the curse of progress, the older games tweeked the code to work the profile systems for sales at the time. That's why when the VM model that MS finally picked broke many older games. If there had not been as much ♥♥♥♥♥ing and activism to develop compatiblitly mode in the later Win's games would have been orphaned and forgotten. It's kind of funny that 'winxp' compatibility mode is not available on MS's entry OS, right? One would think those dudes are the ones who need backward compatibility the most. Aaahh.. TCA? No! MS? Yep!

There are many different methods to approach before you give up. One really really old game approach is to shutdown the Win7 explorer shell, run the game, and restart the shell. Search for "AOE2 on win7". See below...

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II
empires2.exe
Start explorer.exe

The above is usually used when you get violet water on older games (i.e., color issues).

I might also point out that ETW was released in 2009 while RTW was released in 2005. So, yes, it is logical that it would not run a cleanly.

Troubleshoot and post your results, both failure and SUCCESS! So others may learn from your labors.
