Just think about it. A group of players are trying to survive hordes of darkspore.
I mean, game already has horde/spawn mechanic. And they can split the rounds (not waves, rounds) like 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and so on. However, you always start from 1.1, and there's a new button, "Join Late Game" (explained later on). Any chicken can leave with their prize in between those levels, others may want to risk it for greater chance of getting something decent. Then game looks for another player to fill the party, if someone leaves- but there should be a way/system to keep both players happy. I mean lets say I joined a group at 1.20, I shouldn't be eligible for what others are. Medals should be (I don't know how exactly those medals and stuff work) player based, not party based, awarded to each player after a round.
Problem is, there would be balance issues between squads/items/heroes and combinations of those. To keep this fair, game should check hero level total of a squad (not the middle value), and add extra difficulty accordingly for each player. I said hero levels, because better items you have, higher hero level your hero has.
And then, game looks for hero types, and depending of the difficulty, throw more of the same type, so that people should approach enemies carefully, with tactics if possible. Difficulty multiplier is in effect, and it makes hordes much more brutal, throwing many "special" ones, lesser bosses and stuff. These are required to keep the game mode funny for everyone, if I'm to face bosses that die with just 1 hit, it won't be funny, and it'll be abused...
About the rewards, those shouldn't offer the highest-possible-best items out of the game, but also keep players happy. etc... etc... just throwing some ideas how the mode could be, what can be abused, how it can be prevented... not my job, but just ideas =P
So, what do you say? I think it'll be a pretty decent game mode.
