So my computer is way far away from my router. This means I have to either get a longer Ethernet cable or a longer telephone cable to move the router closer to my computer. (Only one phone jack in my apartment ) for the least attenuation of my network strength should I buy a longer ethernet cable or a longer phone cable?

Always try to keep the phone cord as short as possible (under 6ft) to allow the highest performance of a phone line for a DSL connection. With an Ethernet cable you can go hundreds of feet before any slowdowns occur.
Another solution (aside from shorter phone cable + longer ethernet cable) would be to either get yourself a good router that supports wireless, or if this is a feature u already have, setup the wireless to be secured and use a wireless adapter on your computer to illuminate the use of an ethernet cable running across the apartment.

Max length for an ethernet cable is 100M (about 330 feet), before you start running into any issues.
Even at this maximum distance, you can expect no reduction in speed and no measurable increase in latency.

Is this the same if you use a ethernet-to-ethernet connector or a switch to extend the length of the line?

Before going to any type of Ethernet extender is it always best to see if the distance covered is under 100m(330ft). If you have two Ethernet wires of length equal to the distance or slightly over, but still under that 100m, than you could use a coupler.
Powerline networking ONLY works on wires that are on the same breaker/fuse. Aka, if you plug in a powerline adapter into your living room and the second one in your kitchen, it will most likely not work unless the wiring was done badly, aka more plugs than there should be on a breaker.
A switch can be used in place of an extender, but the more computers you add to that switch the slower it becomes for each computer on that switch. So if you have a 4-port router with an 8-port switch behind it on a 10/100. The 7 computers on that switch would all have to share a single 10/100 port which equates to 14.28 Mbps for each computer equally if they were all in use at once.
Sadly, I don't really know anything about repeaters.

Cat 6e Ethernet cabling or Wireless N
No single person will notice the difference in quality in real world.
