I keep getting a black screen on start-up that says "No connection to Steam, check your connection" or something to that affect.

Some people can't connect to Steam. We've identified that with certain Windows installations that do not have the MSVCR100 DLL. We will include that in the next update, this coming week, but Microsoft has that up here:
