Audio goes quiet when using steam chat?

The in game voice chat was broken for me (mate sounded like the audio equivalent of a strobe light) so we're using steam voice chat - but when the convo starts the in game audio level drops to almost nothing! The sound level occasionally returns to normal, for no obvious reason.

Anyone else encountered this problem, and know how to fix it?

Try going to control panel in windows - sounds - communications tab and check it's set to 'do nothing'. Other settings there can mute or reduce volume when windows detects voice comms use.
