If you experience a crash bug, please do the following:
EDIT:
Checklist before posting here:
Does your system meet the requirements for the game? If not, buy new hardware ;)
Update your drivers
If it still crashes, try to do the following:
Are you running Windows 7 64-bit? Try running the game in compability mode for xp-sp 3 and run it as an administrator.
Verify the integrity of the game cache. Right click on Sanctum in libary
- Go to properties and then the local files tab
- Then verfiy integtrity of game cache.
- Redownload if needed.
If it still crashes:
run dxdiag, windowsbutton + r if you run Windows 7. start->run on XP. Save information and open pastebin.com and paste the info.
Go to %currentuser%\Documents\My Games\Sanctum\SanctumGame\Logs and copy the info in the most recent log-file and paste that in pastebin.com as well.
Supply us with both links so we have something to work with. :)

I bought this game a few days ago and I've yet to get it able to work. When I start it up I just get the splash screen, a pause of a few seconds, then a black box and a crash message. My specs:
Windows Vista SP2
ATi Radeon X1300
2GB RAM
1.86 GHz Dual Core CPU
I know it isn't much, but it has played much more demanding games than this in the past. Any idea what might be the problem?

Try opening the SanctumEngine.ini file (located in "Documents\My Games\Sanctum\SanctumGame\Config") and edit the line
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=False
to say
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
As Nekomancer pointed out, the computer does not meet the system requirements for Sanctum, and you may experience some slight performance issues, but we still hope the game will run on your computer and that you will enjoy it. Hope this helps.

Thanks, this seems to have worked. After adjusting some of the graphics settings I can play the game lag-free. I really enjoyed my first game, even though I got absolutely demolished >.<
Thanks again!

Random (BSOD) crashing with AMD 5970 and their 11.2 drivers. 8G RAM, Windows 7 64bit. Thinking of loading the 11.3 AMD driver that just came out but I don’t think it would help.
I also get a black screen at first and hear sounds but don’t see anything until the Unreal logo.

I have successfully played Sanctum on this system, a day or two ago. Now when I try to launch it, it fails though -- crashes on startup.

I have a bug similar to page 8 where I am now completely unable to even enter the game. Upon startup windows detects something causing the game not to function correctly and gives no other option but to close it. All other games on Steam are working fine.
I have had Sanctum run just fine on my system, just up until a 600mb update a day ago.
System specs.

Hello, Myself and a friend have been attempting to play Sanctum but to no avail. I skimmed through the 12 page's prior to this and didn't see anything related to this bug.
Basically what is occurring is anywhere between 15 minutes to 90 minute's of game-play the computer itself will randomly without warning do a hard reboot. We both ensured our video driver's are up to date, and using PC Wizard ruled out the possibility of overheating.

We'll check into it and hope for a quick fix :)
But here is what I think:
Since it takes a different amount of time before it decides to reboot it does sound like overheating. Your computer is very good and Sanctum should run as smooth as it gets. How's your power supply? Could also be some kind of hard-drive error. All in all it's probably an issue with your hardware :(
I know for a fact that it is not lack of power for any of my equipment since I am using a Ultra X3 1600-Watt Power Supply, and my friend is using the newer Ultra X4 1600-Watt Power Supply.
As for overheating I played another game using 2 temperature monitoring programs PC WIzard and RealTemp and only my GPU 1 was remotely close to the shutdown temperature of 105C, which was running at 89C at its highest just seconds before system power down.
Also to rule out conflict with hardware, myself and my friend's only matching hardware aside from OS, is our motherboards. Everything else we have hardware wise is different, although video chipset is the same, but factory spec'ed differently.
Friends DxDiag: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GG4A72U0
My DxDiag: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VWCG2GIK
Also I should note that late last night after I posted, I tried playing another game, this time setting window mode, and disabling my second screen, I was able to play for about 2 hour's, before a complete system lock, resulting in me having to hard crash my computer. While the test just prior to this post (less then 10 minutes ago), left second screen on and crashed within 15 minute's. Not sure how relevant that information is, but stating it anyway.
PS: Also forgot to mention in my post that my friend is able to resume single player campaign map's. I can not. Whenever I click resume on single player, I get a infinite loading screen.
PPS: Also the first crash didnt touch my desktop, but the last 2 crash's have completely scrambled my desktop, although I presume that is mainly due to the fact I have it in window mode now at the resolution of 1680x1050, while my desktop resolution for both screen's are 1900x1200.

Overheating GPU
Have you tried enabling v-sync? I know in some other games that when your specs are far and beyond what the game requires, the GPU tends to overwork itself. Turning v-sync on keeps this from happening since it's only belting out 60 FPS instead of climbing to whatever its maximum is.
This could likely still be resolved on the developer's end as well, of course. Simply throwing this out because I've had this issue with at least one other title recently, League of Legends, and remember having it for some in the past as well.

I am having the same problem as these two people.\
The time of crash is not consistant, but it is happening after less play time each time.
The last time I started the game, this happened after just 1min of starting the game. I get a hard reboot without fail every time. Note that even when I click restart on my computer it does not power down for the short time most do. It remains constantly powered. And this game somehow makes my computer power down and then restart into the improper shutdown screen. I have played the game for around 1 hour according to steam...while experiencing at least 6-7 of these happening. I have tried disabling my 2nd monitor, using windowed mode, lowering resolution, validated files, and reinstalled.
I have checked temperature logs, and ALL equipment in my machine was no higher than 52 degrees C. DO NOT TELL ME it is overheat like you told the previous poster.

Am completely unable to play this game whatsoever.
My specs:
Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise
Intel Core i7 960
Gigabyte X58-UD7
6GB DDR3 ram
The details:
After starting from steam the splash screen appears and then the game starts. After <.5 sec it freezes up as well as artifacts start appearing all over my screen and if not quick enough and without any luck it will spiral into a BSOD very very quickly.
What I have done to rectify this (with no results):
I have checked for file integrity several times and even went so far as to uninstall then reinstall and re-download the game. I achieved nothing by doing either of these. I also wiped and tried different drivers for my graphics card. After doing a wipe before each time with Driver Sweeper, I have tried a earlier version and even a beta version of the driver to no avail.
The log:
http://pastebin.com/3GQH616W
I will check this thread often as I am frustrated and disappointed over my inability to do anything about this over the past few days so any questions or anything at all will be responded to quick as can be.

We are really confused about this issue. We haven't been able to reproduce the error which makes it pretty hard to pindown. But looking at the pastebin, it seems that the rendering-thread is overloaded. What kind of graphics card do you have?

We found after a bit serching around a guy from the UDK forum that got Scaleform working by ending the taskhost.exe process. We believe that Scaleform is what makes it crash.
WARNING: We do not know what this will do, and Microsoft does NOT recommend turning this off:
http://searchtasks.answersthatwork.com/tasklist.php?File=Taskhost
IF you do, and it works, this is a temporary workaround as we are searching for making this work.
It would also help if you could supply us with a link to a pastebin with your info.

We are trying to get a fix and are in contact with people over at Epic. Could you all people that get the crash after the CSS-logo try this please:
Could you try disabling the TextServicesFramework monitor task in Task Scheduler [\Microsoft\Windows\TextServicesFramework\MsCtfMoni tor] please? Does that workaround the crash?

Didnt work for me. Still did a hard crash after the splash and the little intro movies (like unreal and what-not). Perhaps the only difference would be the menu "Start" screen was 'functional' for about ~1 sec or less (functional being that i moved my mouse momentarily and could see movement in the background for little under a second). This isnt really an improvement or anything really as it could just be chance that it didnt hang after so long. :<
I noticed for the TextServicesFramework monitor task to not run anymore it said that it would only change after relogging after I disabled it in which I did and it still hasn't done a thing. A minor correction but it didn't do anything for me.
I'm more than willing to keep testing the ideas and am about to reinstall windows 7 so I will be able to try any ideas after I am back up and running in the morning. Best of luck!

Short: I'm getting Blackscreen or BSOD after playing for around 20min.
DxDiag: http://pastebin.com/D9599gNU
Desc: Game runs well, then suddenly graphics freeze and system crashes, sometimes with screens going black, sometimes with BSOD, sometimes with screen-distortions. Don't think it's a cooling issue, GPU temp is around 60°C. More demanding games run well on the system.
Got a dump from the last BSOD, here is the Log: http://pastebin.com/5cPPGfye
And here is what WinDbg can tell from the dump: http://pastebin.com/0SevABWT
Tried driver version 266.58 and 270.32(unreleased yet ;)) with no difference.

Short: Crash upon startup. Of beta.
DxDiag: http://pastebin.com/ytYNCHyS
Launch log: http://pastebin.com/5J6GdHpa
Desc: I get the splash screen and mere seconds after it crashes. I've tried the basic things of uninstalling the game and reinstalling with no results. It gives the "ShippingPC-SanctumGame.exe has stopped working." error and i've tried a couple of the things listed here. However not this: "Could you try disabling the TextServicesFramework monitor task in Task Scheduler [\Microsoft\Windows\TextServicesFramework\MsCtfMoni tor] please? Does that workaround the crash?" As i couldn't find that anywhere.
From my own look at the laung.log it says something about running out of virtual memory and that i must free up space on my HDD, however i'd assume 170 gb free space should suffice.
Willing to test stuff to help you resolve this issue.

I've still got the 386mb memory dump here. I'd upload it to you if it helps. Just don't want to publicy disclose my memory content (which may potentially contain passwords and stuff) on rapidshare or something like that :-)
EDIT: Just zipped everything I could find (dumpfiles, windows report etc.) together in a ~100mb zipfile. Uploading to my webserver now just in case. Takes some time on my home connection. PM me for link and password if you can make use of it.

When I start, I am get the splash screen on the desktop that says sanctum. Then it goes through the credit movies or whatever just fine. Then the start screen appears and it completely locks up.
It always happens this way. Crashing at the 'start' screen.
I just reinstalled windows so I am going to give this a try again. And again. :)
************************************************** ***************
Didn't want to spam the thread with my messages; so, a update.
e: I re-downloaded and tried the game again. It is still freezing at the same place. The 'start' screen. I figure that I can try tomorrow to dig out my old 8800 GTS and see if that will work, and although I am pretty certain that it isn't my graphics card it wouldn't hurt to try.

The log can be found under "username/My Documents/My Games/Sanctum/SanctumGame/Logs/
In there take the content of the text file with the newest timestamp and upload the text to www.pastebin.com.
For the system information you can run the command dxdiax in windows, press "save information" button and also upload that text file to pastebin.
Doing these two procedures will help us a great deal finding those nasty crashes

I just need to know for some planning (playing on different ladders, so knowing this would be kinda useful, no pressure intended), when do you want to push out that patch? So I can make some free time that day.

I can't really get into details for when the next patch will be up for various reasons. But as you probably know we are working constantly on the game so it won't be too long
And another request for when you post your crash bugs. Please specify if you have problems with other games using Unreal Engine 3. Example of games using UE3 is Batman, Borderlands, Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3 among others

How much HDD space you got doesn't matter. It looks like you filled your RAM memory and things got carried away from there. But you got this crash at startup you say? You shouldn't be able to fill the memory on that short time... I'll keep looking!

I had some problems with UT3, none with Global Agenda, if that one uses the same engine. I don't think I have any other games using the UE3.
I can't remember what the problem was with UT3, I think it just gave me lots of crashes-to-desktop and the sound wouldn't play. Froze after a few minutes of play. Then I did something, I really can't remember what that was, and all the problems were fixed. Until I reinstalled some day and couldn't figure out what I had done to get rid of those errors.
Anyway, I'm currently reinstalling Sanctum after having completely wiped my PC of any Nvidia related drivers.
UPDATE: I don't get the first error at the splash screen anymore, instead I'm having the "shipping-sanctum.exe doesn't work anymore" error, right after the coffee-stain logo video. Do you need the logs for that?

To fix it: Right click on Sanctum in libary
Go to properties and then the local files tab
Then verfiy integtrity of game cache.
It said it found 3 bad files, it redownloaded the files then when launching it worked

Odd to call it "Primary Hard disk" then, no?
Also indeed, and as you can see from the dxdiag i've 4 gigs of ram. More than suffiecient considering i'm running the game with no resource heavy software running. Like 3.5 gigs free when i start it up, really shouldn't be an issue.

@Enyaron
You do not meet the system requirements. Your videocard does not support shader model 3.0. Without that, the game can't run.
And since you're using a laptop, there is nothing you can do. It's a hardware thing and in laptops, you can't swap that kind of hardware. You'd need a new laptop to run the game.
P.S.: HOLY CRAP, your videodriver is ancient.

Maybe try removing the game and then installing again and then once installed try:
1) open the SanctumEngine.ini file (located in "Documents\My Games\Sanctum\SanctumGame\Config") and edit the line
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=False
to say
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
Then
2) Verify Integrity of game files
3) Launch the game

Still does not solve anything. With this many people with broken and unplayable games in beta was fine; but, it has already officially released. I really hope this fixes soon, not everyone is going to wait another month for these fixes that should have been tested already. (Like my motherboard -_-)
I am tired of every single game developer and publisher shoving out these unplayable or just stupidly rushed and broken games. Gaming is being destroyed by corporate marketing.

Of course they were moved. We would never delete any important posts...
We are a small company with very limited resources. We have a couple of computers. We have a few older computers that we test the game on, and it works fine on these. We can't test the game on every variant of motherboards/video-card/drivers. That's just insane.
Since we can't re-create these crashes, it's very hard to fix them. That doesn't meen that aren't trying. We are in contact with people at Epic as well trying to get these things fixed. Hopefully we will come up with a solution soon.

___________ I am guessing the problem would be the operating system, as it is the only thing that I have in common with other people who crashed.
I fixed the crashes I had by running ShippingPC-SanctumGame.exe in compatibility mode for windows xp SP3 and running it as an administrator. The path to this should be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sanctum\Binaries\Win3 2 or something similar.
Right click on ShippingPC-SanctumGame.exe and select properties.
Go to the compatibility tab and then check, Run in compatibility...windows xp sp3. Then check run as administrator.

-Hope this helps!
Thank you all for your replies. Next week we will try and dig up what it is that causes the game to crash for some. In the meantime, do what 6amercentral says!
Thank you for your support!

After I beat the "Mine" level, regardless of which option I choose (next level, restart level, or menu) the game crashes. I have to start back at wave 18 and can never unlock the next level.

P.S. PLayed BETA, never had this issue. I'll try to see what happens in multiplayer tomorrow.
Still having this issue on BOTH of my machines (XP SP 3, and Vista), basically it crashes whenever a game ends and I have to choose an option. Happens after victory or defeat. I reinstalled the game to no avail, and the file integrity seems in tact.

I didn't think of using compatibility mode for some reason, but once I chose XP SP2 it worked good, I played the tutorial and after that the first level. I did crash at the end of the round though, where I would have chosen what to do. Standard .exe error.
I gave you my DxDiag already,

Just crashed out of a game. Playing Arc singleplayer on Medium, got a Dodger/Glider wave. About 2m after the wave started it crashed. Nothing got close to the core* as they got demolished by my super-prepared Anti-Air defense. I think the game just tried to spite me for demolishing a double-air wave like that, heh.

Here's hoping it was a one-time, easy to fix thing. Imma go back and see where the last checkpoint was. I'll edit/update this post if it crashes again in the same situation (assuming I get another Dodge/Glider combo wave).
* At least, nothing living. I expect corpses were bouncing around near it, those Gliders get some momentum!

It has done this 3 times during the tutorial and so far about 10 times in the first mission…..my total play time so far would be less than 5 minutes all up. The game is completely unplayable which is a shame.

Nope, just the one. Although, that log is after a few attempts.
I've tried everything in the OP (except updating my graphics drivers, I'll be doing that shortly)
Just checked my running processes, ShippingPC-SanctumGame.exe wasn't running. Tried launching it again, crashed at the splash screen again
Checked the log file. Looks like it didn't make a new one. Just Launch-Backup from yesterday (the pastebin linked), and an empty Launch.log

Yes JohannesAspeby i have done this and it has not helped.
Interesting though was when i turned all settings to off/low and resoloution to lowest possible (600/480 i think) and sound off , i managed to get to wave 3 before system freezing, the longest i have ever had a chance to play :)
But after the forced restart i was back to the 5-10 seconds average on system freezing/crashing.
I have been turning settings on and off trying to get this to happen again but to no luck.
Im not that big of a fan of having to force restart my computer on a regular basis so i might stop before i cause another problem elsewhere...shame the 3 waves i played were great.

Same as everyone else, game crashes on start up. It worked fine for a while until one day I was playing online (Mine) and the game froze, forcing me to reboot. my friend was unaffected. I have done the following actions:
reset the steam client blob
verified the sanctum game files
redownloaded sanctum (and reverified)
terminated the taskhost
edited a line in the sanctum config file (suggested solution on this forum)
no effect
here's my dx and log info:

hope we get it up soon, thanks guys and keep up the good work!

It has been a month since I've owned this game and I am still unable to play it. At this point I've just given up on you all finding a solution so can I just get a refund instead or at the very least the cost of the game added to my steam wallet?

I can still only play the game in 1024x768, and it deserves to be played in high rez,.. coz 1024x768 makes my eyes bleed

Have you tried lowering your desktop resolution? This has worked for some
Just tried it, reduced to 1600x900 even 1280x720 with no luck. splash image for a second then crash. Thats from the windows settings, how do i pull up the original option i saw the first time i ran the game?

What do you mean with the original option? Have you successfully entered the game once?
The first time it ran i was asked to choose a resolution before the game started... then it died. since then i get the splash screen for about 1-2 sec then it dies.
I tried validating files and got the game to work, first thing i did was go and set it to native res 1920x1080, just restarted the game, seems to be working... shal keep you up to date.

A wild guess... did you buy the game from D2D? I've myself have never seen this box you're talking about.
Anyways, you can change the resolution in SanctumEngine.ini located at %Documents%\My Games\Sanctum\SanctumGame\Config.
Search for resx and resy and change the values to set your resolution

The game runs fine except in multiplayer! First time I connected to a friend it was fine for about 8 waves. Then would randomly disconnect and refuse to reconnect for no apparent reason. Its incredibly laggy on and off, so much so its nearly impossible to shoot enemies. Any advice? My computer meets the minimum and both of our internet connections are solid.
I've run compatibility and as admin and it is slightly less laggy but still randomly disconnects/wont reconnect.

Since I installed Sanctum, the game has been randomly crashing.
Sometimes it occurs after a game has finished, when I click load check point, Restart Level and Exit to Menu etc...
The screen will go black and I get a message asking me if i want to send an error report to Microsoft.
I did all the things you asked but that didn't fix it.

If it refuses to reconnect, a temporary workaround is to try to host/create a single player game and then try to reconnect again.

Hello Best_Pope_Ever,
I'm sorry that you feel neglected, this is of course not our intention. Since the game was released we've been able to fix quite a few crash bugs. In this latest patch we did some fixes that we hoped would fix your problem. I suggest you update your graphics card drivers. If this doesn't work you can contact the Steam Support about refund. I'm real sorry for the inconvenience and hope you get to play the game.

Hello guys, as I stated before, I have just bought the game and it's awesome. :P BUT when I try to load a checkpoint after defeat or if I simply exit the game, it freezes and I need to restart my computer. Any thoughts on that? Last time I played this game I had no such issues, so I don't think it's old drivers or something. If you need DirectX defrag or something just let me now. If it's a known issue, sorry to bother you. :)
Edit - I think the problem is gone now, sorry for the inconvenience.

So.... We are finally getting somewhere with the crashes. What we need now are your *.dmp files that are located in the same directory as the *.log. Please mail them to support@coffeestainstudios.com. If you could mail it together with the .log it would be great. We really hope we can address the problem asap.

i'll have to reverify that I installed those as well later today, pretty sure I installed the physx and amdcpusetup.exe (though for a little bit that one game me an error about not being supported on my OS).
Edit:
Just installed and ran on my laptop without any errors. laptop is running win7 64bit, desktop is running vista 64bit, is there an installation error with vista 64bit?

Guess the joke's on all of us for not checking this thread before getting the game. I did try the demo when it came out but didn't buy the game, till today I couldn't quite remember why (assumed it was for the price), then with the summer sale I figured it's time, now I remember why I didn't buy it back then, I actually got the same system freeze on the demo I'm getting now on the full game!
So, to my version of the issues: I get no crash, no error or BSOD whatsoever, the game simply freezes my computer a few seconds into the level (I never make it past building my second block), no alt+tab, alt+F4 not even ctrl+alt+del, I have to reboot the PC manually. after cranking down my graphic setting to low and doing the true/false shader thingie from the first page of this thread, I managed to play a while, but as soon as I tried to load a check point it froze in the same fashion.
My specs meet the requirements (WinXP SP3, Core 2 Duo E4300, Radeon HD 4870, 2 GB RAM -- not cutting edge, but meeting the requiremets). Here's the pastebins:
DXDIAG:
http://pastebin.com/fUW8g00J
LOG:
http://pastebin.com/pHqLiAvT
No *.dmp files were created.
What gives me the least hope is that I'm pretty much echoing posts from almost 4 months ago, and of course I'm getting the same error I did when playing the demo back then, so there doesn't seem to be much point in hoping for an actual fix.

i'll have to reverify that I installed those as well later today, pretty sure I installed the physx and amdcpusetup.exe (though for a little bit that one game me an error about not being supported on my OS).
Edit:
Just installed and ran on my laptop without any errors. laptop is running win7 64bit, desktop is running vista 64bit, is there an installation error with vista 64bit?
on the laptop the sanctum files were actually installed to the mygames folder.
Reinstalled DirectX, physx, amdcpusetup, vcredist_x64_vs2008sp1, and vcredist_x86_vs2008sp1

I get a crash upon starting the first mission. I start the mission and can look around, but upon clicking on any tile (overview or not) my computer crashes, no ability to end process and I am forced to hard restart. I had this problem in the demo and figured it must have been a demo bug, but I also have it in the full game. I was able to play through the tutorial fully.
I get a partial log file (looks like it cuts off or something) as well as a dmp file. I've tried the stuff in most of the thread to no success.

:( All I can say is, that we will try to find out what's causing these crashes. Maybe it has something to do with the OS
DXDIAG:

What gives me the least hope is that I'm pretty much echoing posts from almost 4 months ago, and of course I'm getting the same error I did when playing the demo back then, so there doesn't seem to be much point in hoping for an actual fix.
We really have tried fixing the crashes. Some we have actually been successful at eliminating. But since we can't recreate these crashes ourselves it's damn hard veryfing if we fix something or not.

I fixed my issue, it was/is kind of a silly fix and still a workaround as starting the game through steam doesn't work.
I copied the sanctum folder from the [installed] location, steam/steamapps/common/sanctum, and placed it in the user/documents/mygames folder, then ran the exe from that location. Running through steam still crashes before it starts however...
So, at least for me, the issue was just that it was installing to the incorrect location, or even that the game was looking in the wrong location to start the exe file.

I'm getting similar results when I try to play, although in my case the demo worked fine and both the tutorial and the short introduction at the beginning of the first level worked fine. But every time at the exact moment (I guess) the actual level is about to begin, my entire PC freezes, not creating any logs or dumps. I tried both fullscreen and windowed, always leaving me with no option but hitting the reboot button.
What surprises me most is that I could build and attack fine in the tutorial. My system specs are fine as well (WinXP SP3, AMD Dual Core 3,1GHz, Radeon HD4770 overclocked or not, 3,2Gb RAM) and as I said, tutorial and demo run without problems. So I guess a problem with my computer is out of the question.

I can not get past the splash screen. The screen keeps flickering and freezing. I found out that my ATI drivers are continuously crashing when running Sanctum. Windows recovers them and then they crash again. After a few times of this I get a BSOD.
I have the latest ATI drivers, 11-6.
Edit: I just did a little more testing and got the game to work by disabling Crossfire. While ATI drivers are always terrible other games manage fine and Sanctum needs to not cause BSODs. I hope this issue will be sorted out soon, especially for the people who may not think to try that.

Same here. Bought another copy today for a friends kid who has a Toshiba Sat. notebook A505, which plays Portal and TF2 fine, but Sanctum while it will load always crashes when a map is loading.
Everything is up to date and I've tried all of our tricks.
What the heck is the trigger while a map is loading that is kicking the exe?
I'm not pasting a crash dump, this kid just needs to play some Sanctum. ;-)

I'll check Johannes, but since it plays Portal fine I really thought Sanctum would run if I dropped all of the graphic settings to low.
You have to admit the Unreal engine is too much of a hog if that isn't true. ;-)
btw, as for SLI, I play it fine on a dual nVidia SLI i7.
UPDATE: Still can't get Sanctum to load a map on this system but get this;
I installed Borderlands on it and that game is running great.
No Sanctum but Portal, TF2 and Borderlands all run fine on it? Gosh.
btw, it has 4G of system memory, 1G video, that apparently is not an issue.

Got the game yesterday due to a recommendation from a friend who knows I love both FPS and TD games and wanted a multiplayer partner.
Tried everything suggested in the 13 pages in the topic before uninstalling, manually deleting anything left and reinstalling to no avail. Wasn't pleased when I couldn't get it to work after over an hour of my time.
I love to support indie developers but this game obviously wasn't tested enough before or during the alpha or beta processes on different types of computer hardware and OS's.
Please get some kind of patch out ASAP so my money and time isn't wasted.

Like others here I have been suffering the full system lock-up which requires me to hard reset the computer. This problem has been prevalent in most games that use the Unreal Engine for me though. The only one I've never had a problem with is Killing Floor.
I had thought I'd solved the problem though(my motherboard auto supplied too much voltage to the CPU)but it's returned with a vengeance with Sanctum.
The thing is while the issue ends in the same way when and how it happens, if it even happens, differs from game to game. The Last Remnant for example, crashed randomly, whereas Mass Effect 2 crashed mostly when I was looking at things that used like a Blue Shader (for anyone who's played it, think the Reaper Core in the derelict Reaper.) I've not tried Mass Effect 2 again but the Core in Sanctum looks exactly like it. There's also a lot of flashy blue. I don't know if it's even the cause but I'm just mentioning it.
Batman Arkham Asylum I had problems with only until I discovered some old nVidia graphics drivers, then I had no issues at all, however the motherboard still uses nVidia drivers for the MB chipset. Really I'm just clutching at straws but I don't know what else to try.

This is extremely awkward, but I might have figured out my problem.
After looking over the thread a 2nd time I noticed PaterFrog mentioned in HIS POST (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=21792936&postcount=38) that he had an error listing:
"Failed to create the D3D9 device. This can happen if the desktop is locked. Exiting..."
I remembered that several days ago I locked my desktop after putting an image full screen across a dual monitor for a desktop image.
So I just went to unlock my desktop and boot the game and viola it worked!
Dunno if this would solve any other user's issue, but it's worth a mention.
MY FIX:
XP32 SP3
Right click on desktop > PROPERTIES > "DESKTOP" TAB > "CUSTOMIZE DESKTOP" BUTTON > "WEB" TAB > UNCHECK "LOCK DESKTOP ITEMS"
And it worked for me.
Weird I know.
Hope it helps some other users as well as the developers of Sanctum. I'm about to go play my first game now, hopefully I enjoy myself.

Excellent, thank you, works just fine now, thought I had already done that but apparently something changed in the meantime :P

Sadly your graphics device is not Shader Model 3.0 compatible either, so I'll just quote Johannes:

Thanks, RaykoX.
My understanding with Steam is there's no refunds, though. Anybody heard anything different?

I sent the crash report and all things to support@coffeestainstudios.com. Except I think I only sent 3 dumps and not four like I said. xD Sorry about that.
It's the same virtual memory problem I don't understand at all.
Also Garmonbozia, that was about the same understanding I have of Steam. They have never refunded anything as far as my knowledge goes.

I'm really sorry there's nothing we can do!
You're not obliged to any refund, but I'm no lawyer so don't quote me on that.
But the support people I've encountered are nice, if you're a long-standing steam customer with a few games under your belt I'd just be honest with them, tell them you're not the most technically inclined person(true or not) and that you didn't see/understand the minimum requirements.
If the support rep is having a good day, I think he or she will help you out.

Every time my brother tries to join any multiplayer game both Sanctum and Steam crash entirely. Anyone else have any problems like this and/or know how to fix it? We'd really appreciate it.

A reformat fixed my crash at start-up problem, something about my directx was corrupt and problematic in a few unreal engine games.

I'm thinking a reformat would fix the problems of many users. Even me. I'll do a reformat one of these days once I get a new HD anyway so I can check in the process. Can't be sure though.

Hello, I bought Sanctum when it was on sale and have been unable to play it...at all.
Here is my pastebin of the Sanctum log: http://pastebin.com/y82xttG0
Pastebin for the DXDiag: http://pastebin.com/rCKuXgNK
As for the description of what happens here you go:
When I launch the game nothing pops up. The sound comes on, appears to loop a bit then after a few seconds the splash screen appears (goes straight to this if any button is pressed). After this happens it has about a 1 frame per second or two refresh rate and will eventually crash the computer (Memory Dump BSOD).
If I alt tab while the splash screen is up the message "The Display Driver has crashed and recovered" pops up. If I then go back to the game it is on the "Click any button to Start" screen with the sound stuttering and a refresh rate of maybe once every 5 seconds, a black flash on the screen every second and after about 20-30 seconds it does the Memory Dump BSOD. This is as far as I have gotten.
I tried enabling compatibility mode with XP SP3, run as administrator and disable visual themes. I also tried changing the shaders to refresh on demand and set the proper screen resolution in the .ini file. All game files verified correctly.
I would really like to be able to play this game with my friends and any help to actually play the game would be much appreciated. I'm always glad to help indie developers and spending 3.75 on a game means I'm not too upset when it doesn't work, but it would be nice to actually be able to play the game I purchased.
Again, Thanks for any help and I hope this gets taken care of quickly.
EDIT: I realize its in the dxdiag, but I think I will include it here as well: I am running on WIn 7 Pro x64 with an intel Core i7 920 (at 2.92GHZ), 12GB of RAM, and dual ATI 5770s 1GB in Xfire.
EDIT2:changing "bSerializeStartupPackagesFromMemory=TRUE" to "bSerializeStartupPackagesFromMemory=FALSE" fixed the game! Yay!

You should read the page 14. You need to unlock the desktop.
Right click your desktop > properties > desktop tab > personalize/customize > Web tab > uncheck the Block Desktop box.

I found some ways to fix launching error that says "Shipping blahblah stopped working" on Japanese forum.
1) open the SanctumEngine.ini file (located in "Documents\My Games\Sanctum\SanctumGame\Config") and edit the line
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=False
to say
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
2)launch the game so many times without closing the error window
3)edit the line on sanctum\Engine\Config\BaseEngine.ini
bSerializeStartupPackagesFromMemory=TRUE
to say
bSerializeStartupPackagesFromMemory=FALSE
better try;)

The first one is of course showed already... but time to declare something:
The third option fixed my problem with the virtual memory shortage. That officially fixed it.
Thanks everyone for the support! And... really amazing game. =) Still going to be around in case my experience helps somehow.

I am having the "Shippingpc-SanctumGame.exe has stopped working" error. The game starts up fine, the menu loads and I can play the tutorial fine. When I try to load the first level, the Mine loading screen comes up and after a little bit it freezes then exits to a black half-screen and the error comes up.
http://pastebin.com/dHSc0zHg <-- DX diag
http://pastebin.com/qbD0iSvA <-- most recent log.
My log seemed to be empty for the longest time. It only contained information once I had played through the tutorial. If I just try to start the first level the log is empty.
Hopefully you can help.

I'm having crash bugs as well. Sorry if my crash has been reported here already, but I'm a bit short on time so I don't have time to go through the thread.
My game works fine, but every time I end a match, say if I'm done with the tutorial or I quit a match halfway through, I get a CTD that says this: Shippingpc-SanctumGame.exe has stopped working.
It's slightly annoying, as I have to restart the game every time after every game I play.
Game runs smoothly and comfortably, but after ten minutes or so of gameplay the computer will invariably hard-crash, or freeze up, lock up, whatever you want to call it. Frozen picture, stuttering sound, no BSoD, have to reset the computer.
Here's my DxDiag (http://pastebin.com/mpqAYMg2), and the most recent (i.e. only) Sanctum log (http://pastebin.com/Ewc6Ur1j).
Any help would be appreciated.

So I fixed it. What worked for me was to uninstall the graphics driver and reinstall the latest updated one from the manufacturers website. Anyone with an Intel Graphics card should try that. Don't just update, uninstall completely and reinstall.

A few weeks ago, I had the problem about crashing upon using televators and after a few minutes in game without using them. That was under windows xp. I just upgraded to 7, and decided to give it another try. It now works just fine, so possibly that crash is something either operating system specific or direct x specific (i'm on 11 now). Not really sure if this helps at all, but figured I'd throw it out there.

After checking your log and DxDiag, I see that your graphics-card is quite old and don't support PixelShader 3.0, this is required to run the game. Sorry to say, but you need to buy a new graphics card to get the game running. If you would buy a new graphics card, I'd would however suggest getting a entirely new computer as you would be bottlenecked by your CPU.

-I just bought Sanctum as part of the indie pack, installed it, and tried to run it. Immediately after The Coffee Stain Studios screen, it blacks out and gives me the "WeShippingPC-SanctumGame.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Error.
-I can reprodusce the error simply by running the game. I have tried about 20 times, it always happens.

didn't work..... I tried 3 times actually....
I've never gotten the game to work either, have sent in numerous logs and so on. At this point I'll just wait for the next update that comes out and try installing again to see if the problem has been found and fixed. Steam doesn't do refunds so I'll just have to wait and see. :)

I've sent an e-mail to support but I thought I might as well post here too.
So I finally started playing Sanctum after having had it installed for about 4 days. I click play, Steam installs 3 things, and I play for 4 hours. I then try to play again later that night and it doesn’t work. I see the splash screen for 5 minutes, then I get a Windows error stating ShippingPC-SanctumGame.exe has crashed. Verifying my Steam cache for Sanctum has turned up nothing. I can play other games, including Borderlands and Batman Arkham Asylum (powered by UE3) just fine.
My DxDiag is here: http://pastebin.com/rX0bZL56
The logs that are made from crash attempts are completely empty.
My specs are: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 @ 3.00 GHz
8 GB DDR2 RAM @ 800 MHz
ATI Radeon HD 4850
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium
I would also like to point out that during the 5 minute limbo and Steam verification, my computer becomes very slow. Typing something from the keyboard is sketchy at best and the mouse “pauses” every 5 seconds or so while moving. Trying to open up a simple program takes much longer than it should. Also, attempting to end the ShippingPC-SanctumGame.exe process during that limbo time will not do anything and will actually never make the game crash, permanently slowing my computer unless I shut down or restart.
Quite interesting how the game worked the first time, but not any time after. I would really like to play some more.

im fearful of buying sanctum...
reason? i cant even play the demo...ive been trying to make the demo work every single day since it first came out,and im STILL not able to play it,i HAVE played much more demanding games on my laptop before.i really think sanctum looks like an absolutely amazing game, and have been talking with my friends for years saying "if only there was even one first person shooter tower defense!"
i have loved every valve game i have played, and consider myself somewhat new to pc gaming - im more of a console gamer, like the hassle free gaming style :D
now,im sorry for my rambling, but heres the error...FINALLY!

I'm in the other boat, the demo worked but the game won't. Each new version I'll reinstall and try again. I'm sure one day they'll locate the issues some of us have and the it'll work for everyone. :)

Ah, I didn't have time to play the demo and get the royal bundle before it got too expensive. (Well, not expensive, but I really don't want to go over a certain amount for some games I don't know much about...)
I have Intel integrated graphics, and yeah, I know. Otherwise my Laptop has pretty good specs, I should try and see if I can replace the video card, but that's so complicated...Anyway, a shame, it seems interesting but too laggy :(
Try opening the SanctumEngine.ini file (located in "Documents\My Games\Sanctum\SanctumGame\Config") and edit the line
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=False
to say
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
As Nekomancer pointed out, the computer does not meet the system requirements for Sanctum, and you may experience some slight performance issues, but we still hope the game will run on your computer and that you will enjoy it. Hope this helps.
I have SanctumEngine.ini and I opened it in notepad but there's no bInitializeShadersOnDemand=False in it.

Yes, there is. Why it won't show when you run a search for it specifically, I don't know.
I do know what running a search for "Shaders" will take you right to it (at least, it did so for me).

Hi,
I just started playing this game and I love it.
However the game keeps randomly crashing my system completely (need a reboot to get it back)
I've looked in the log files and the last line always seems to be
Timed out while waiting for GPU to catch up. (500 ms)
I have no trouble playing any other games at all.
Any advise?
UPDATE
Turns out it was just a coincidence it crashed on the above line on 3 of the logs. The others just stop mid way through random lines.
Specs
Window 7 64bit
2x2gb DDR2 ram (4gb)
1tb harddrive (over 100gb free on the OS/game partition)
AMD x2 7750 - factory settings
4850 - factory settings
Latest drivers, windows upto date and system clean of any malware or virus'.
I've verified the Steam files about a dozen times.
I've ran a log of the gpu temperature and it comes back as never going above 65C and at the point it crashes its in the 60C region.
