Somehow, something happened to the backgrounds, making it hard to see my paddle. The shapes in the background are purple and I can't even see the Mega/Nether bars. Am I not the only one, and is there anything I could do to resolve this problem?

Yup, same problem. I'm never buying another Gaijin game again. My card should be able to run this game fine, according to the requirements.
I mean honestly, a pong game that seemingly needs at most, a video card 2 years old or newer, is lame. Developers are just lazy.
Also unable to get my last potato because of this. :/

FYI I've bought it around February and the problem was only introduced some time during the whole Potato ARG event. I actually wonder what the reason could be.

I have the same problem and contacted Gaijin Games. Fortunately, they replied with a solution that works for me: Locate your beat.cfg file in C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Bit.Trip Beat [Vista] and put in the line ForceFixedFunction = yes.
Since then I can play the game again.

OMG, I cannot thank you enough. It totally worked. Got rid of those pink splotchy graphics and allowed me to see again. You, good sir, are a gentleman and a scholar for sharing this.
Why Gaijin has not made this known through a patch note or sticky on the forums or anything is beyond me. The problem is obviously wide spread enough to warrant it. And it would have been helpful to know, considering their involvement in this whole Portal 2 ARG. I will definitely reconsider purchasing any future games from Gaijin.
And, for those of you with WinXP, the direction path is a little different. It's C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\Bit.Trip Beat. The config file will be found there, just apply the fix jello gave. Also, the Local Settings file may be hidden on your PC. To show hidden files, just follow the steps outlined here- http://www.ehow.com/how_5140559_make-folders-visible-windows-xp.html
Also, Golden Potato get!

Press the Windows key and [R] at the same time [or search for the Run command in your start-menu], type in %LocalAppData%\Bit.Trip Beat, and the folder containing the file in question should open. :)

Right click the file and select "Open", then choose "Select a program from a list of installed programs" and pick Notepad.
