View Full Version : Max Payne 1 - Mouse lag - How can I fix this?

Hello. I'm having a strange issue with Max Payne 1. The mouse seems kind of laggy in the menus, no big deal but the problem is that I feel some lag ingame. I've tried turning off vertical refresh from Catalyst Control Center since I had a similar problem with Quake II (which fixed it for Quake II) but I still have lag in Max Payne. I've tried lowering all the graphics settings in Max Payne and set my 3D settings in Catalyst Control Center to Optimal Performance but it hasn't fixed it. I don't have any lag in most of my games. Its as if Vsync is on but I can't find any option in Max Payne to disable it. I've noticed that my controllers lag if I use Vsync in any game. So would anyone know how to fix this?

This is my system:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5850 XXX / (Drivers: ATI Catalyst 11.3)
RAM: Corsair Dominator 4GB DDR3 BEMP
PSU: Corsair TX650

Did you install the soundpatch? If so that's the problem and the creator of the patch is actually working on fixing it. Check this thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1841095) for a possible workaround and updates

I've tried uninstalling the sound patch but the problem is still there :(. I had a look in the readme to see if there are any command line options like disable vsync or anything like that but there isn't. I've tried running the game with the -window command line which fixed the problem but I would like to play the game fullscreen.

if you have a logitech mouse try and disable pointer acceleration in the mouse control panel...

I don't have any special mouse :). I'm just using a regular plug & play mouse.

Ok, I've tried booting into Win XP and it doesn't seem to have the problem. At first, I had my "Wait for vertical refresh" setting to "Off, unless application specifies" which did cause the lag in XP, then I set it to "Always off" which did fix it but regardless of which setting I use in Win 7, there is still lag.

Ah, did you by any chance installed the sound patch on the Sticky Post? If you did your mouse will studder. Yes, big big problems. I'd say.

I still get lag without the sound patch.

It's not the patch, it's your system ;) and the fact that the game was released in 2001 to run on W98 and you expect it to work on W7... the patch is fine, works for most people... maybe you have to wander why it does not for you ...

Please stop posting in all topics about how you blame your problem on the patch, open a decent topic, then we can work on your specific issues. Remember I have been doing this for free for the past few years, I'm not a rockstar/steam or any other firm's employee , just a user doing the best I can to help everyone, but some issues are just unfixable (for me, that is).

If you can't live with that, contact steam and ask them for support or a refund, they never said it was working on w7 and I'm quite sure they are not going to patch a 10year old game, so good luck there...

First and far most there is not a single problem with my system. I have over 140 games on it, plus an uncountable amount of software and none what so ever display this problem. I am a Computer Science Graduate and the least I could do is make sure it’s not my system before I post on a forum.

Secondly, I have not posted “...in all topics...” I was trying to bring all the posts of the same topic together. This should help bring focus to the issue. If you would have read the posts you would have seen that they were having a similar issue as I was. Therefore again I am not alone and it’s not SYSTEM SPECIFIC as you claim.

Thirdly, I do not expect any game regardless of age to run on any system. I just expect integrity from the company. You are correct on one thing -- they never said that the game will run on Win 7. However, they did this in a gray legal way (in keeping with Rockstars past).

Most companies would have put this fact in a red line on the top of their store page. However, the company decided that their legal duty would be filled as follows:

Minimum:
o OS: Microsoft® Windows® 2000/XP (only)
o Processor: 450MHz AMD / Intel Processor
o Memory: 96 MB RAM (128 MB RAM or greater recommended)
o Graphics: 16MB Direct3D Compatible Graphics Card
o DirectX Version: DirectX 8.0
o Hard Drive: 830 MB Hard Drive Space for full install, 530 MB for minimum install
o Sound Card: DirectSound compatible sound card

This is gray legal because it’s easy to miss the word only under minimum requirements. Windows 2000/XP (only) is not minimum but rather maximum. Well I always read the requirements and missed the word only first time around.

For $2 it’s not worth my efforts for a legal challenge which I would almost certainly win given the past history of the company. I just expect integrity from them and if not I hope you and a few others see this and stop supporting them.

Fourthly as for a refund from Valve, that is irrelevant as Valve has very little legal liability in this issue. Do you not read the contract before you purchase a game???

Lastly, how did I ruffle your feathers? Was it because in the last few years you never saw someone bring all relevant topics together? That’s a bit of a concrete thinking, no?

You fully went for that bait there. you should have read the ;) Ofcourse I know it's not your particular system that's why I put it there... on some hardware it just won't work properly, has done so from the start, google on it.

Your way of getting attention (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/search.php?searchid=9931320) is considered spamming the forum by normal forum etiquette, if you wanted to do it properly, you should have opened a topic and link all them other topics there, because now the forum looks like there is only the one problem you experience, and I'm sorry you do, but in reality it does work fine for most people, and this pushes back many other useful topics.

Like I said, I'm trying to help people here, as it's a user support forum. I found a way to convert the sounds and I'm providing a patch that works for most people, free but without guarantees of course. If you feel misled by the patch being there and in your case not working like it should, I'm sorry for that.

It's no good for anyone if you bring up all similar mouse topics from way back. If you got issue's contact rockstar/valve/remedy/3drealms whoever you like.

I'm not angry with you, but I do feel you overdid it a bit with posts, don't be angry with me for that please. I would like a fix just like you, but we all kind of know nothing official is going to happen, so be constructive and dig for the cause, learn how to use rasmaker and sox, perhaps you can find a format that does work, or perhaps it works better for you if you unpack all ras files, so it does not have to do that on the fly...

edit: thinking about it, I would appreciate if you could open and maintain a big mouse issue topic, so there would be one central point to put all that and not so many different threads, that tend to disappear from view...

this (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1824911) thread helped me out. The combination of mouse acceleration and 'run this program in compatibility mode' worked for me.

LOL, DarkjeThe2nd, I am not mad at you, I am howeever seething with RockStar. The company is like Jackal & Hyde the developers who work for them are extremely talented, maybe even quasi-geniuses. However those -- tie stuffed, pencil neck, money hungry, moronic, narrow minded, criminal behaving, immoral, bent, corrupt, crooked, dirty, illegitimate, illicit, self-righteous, racketeering, villainous, peccant, senseless, shady, felons, delinquent, cothes, blood sucking... better stop here – business managers have no talent whatsoever. (Glad I got that off my chest)

Yes I fell for the manager’s bait. However, they won’t get me twice. Too bad thought, they produce some of the best video games, I have ever played. Oh did I mention how I hate their management?

Laughable. Of course you would win a lawsuit over your mouse lag in a game that's ten years old. Why would I stop supporting a company because one of their oldest games has issues on newest computers? You're an idiot.

You're an idiot.

The peanut gallery put his two cents worth. You must feel like a real man now! Taking a quote out of context and giving your mantra. If nothing else you can always apply to Fox news, they love that sort of stuff. But, you will need a more catch slogan then “You’re an idiot.”

“Anyway be quite now; the adults are talking.”

I think he maybe onto something. I used compatibility mode XP and acceleration seems to have done the trick. Thanks
