View Full Version : Lara Croft Guardian of Light random crashes to desktop

I'm really loving this game when it works... my friend and I play it coop on the weekends and we're over halfway through it now, and having a blast. Two good friends with a few jack and cokes in them running for their lives from crazy traps and screaming into steam voice chat like scared little girls = too much fun.

It keeps crashing me to the desktop and I can't find a solution. It has even BSOD a few times now! It's getting really maddening. The crashes are completely random - sometimes it will crash 5 mins into gameplay and sometimes 40mins. I can be doing anything in the game - standing still, running down a hallway, or shooting monsters, and it will crash, so there's no giveaway as to what's causing it.

SYSTEM:
Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core i7
ASUS P6T Deluxe Motherboard
12GB Corsair RAM
nVidia GTX 285
M-Audio Delta 1010
Nexus 850w Silent PSU
Saitek P-880 Gamepad

...all pretty standard stuff with the possible exception of the audio card, but it's a pretty high-end card so I would hope it's not the problem. All the drivers, directx, etc., are all up to date and nothing on the machine is overclocked. Hard drives have no errors on them after very thorough scans, and the memory checks out fine in the mem tests I've run. I monitor all my temps and they never get anywhere near hot, so I know it's not a heat issue. The system is rock solid except in Lara Croft Guardian of Light. I build systems constantly for people, and for the last 20 years I have always built my own, so I've got a lot of experience making stable pc's... it ain't my first time at the rodeo. ;)

Anyone have any thoughts? I've googled for weeks trying to find an answer but most people seem to be having easily reproducible crashes in GoL like a bad save game, or the game crashes on load. Mine seems to be completely at random during gameplay. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Try this utility called BlueScreenView (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html). It keeps a running log of driver and system activity. So if you BSOD you can check it to see what was the last thing Windows was trying to do before you crashed out.

Additional random thought, are you using any kind of cloud-syncing solution with your TR:GoL save game files? I know that Windows Live Mesh prevents updates to a file if the prior update is still in the process of uploading.

Thank you, Ekstor. I had never thought to try a utility like this one and it's a great suggestion. I grabbed both the BSOD and the AppCrash utilities. I'll try it out and see if it gives me something useful.

Regarding the cloud-syncing, I'm currently not using anything other than steam for cloud-syncing... I didn't even realize that TRGoL had that option and it was on by default. Does the steam cloud-syncing only sync after you exit the game, or does it sync during gameplay as well? I might try turning it off and see what happens.

Ah. I had forgotten that TRGoL does cloud syncing through Steam. I doubt that is the issue then unless your internet connection is unstable. It doesn't hurt turning that option off and seeing if it makes a difference (I'm assuming that option exists somewhere).

I've also found that for some games, adjusting the CPU affinity helps as well (though I've never found this to be a problem with TRGoL). If you want to try that, open up your task manager and right click on the TRGoL process after you launch it and ratchet down the cores to just one or two cores and see if your stability improves... you may also want to experiment with having it run on different cores (e.g. something other than CPU core #1 or #2). This is a process that I have to go through with Dragon Age for example (doesn't run stable on an odd # of cores) as well other specific games (some can't handle more than one core).

Believe it or not, I've been busy and haven't had a chance to play LCGoL since posting the above. >.< I will report back with results when I do finally get a chance to play again.

Okay, I finally got a chance to play a bit more last night with my friend. It crashed on me twice in about a 40 minute window. Here are the appcrash reports. Still stumped because other games play completely fine (I played left4dead2 for about 2 hours after these crashes happened and there were no problems). I also stress tested my system last night to see if I could find anything - I ran FurMark for a while and my GTX285 topped out at 83 degrees. I also ran Prime95 for 30 mins and no issues, temps were fine. Then lastly I ran MemTest86+ overnight and when I woke up in the morning there were no issues.

Any help would be appreciated. I love this game but these crashes are really pi**ing me off.
