GamersGate Games you can activate on Steam

Steam does not take Laser Cards so I decided to make a thread about all the games you can buy from GamersGate with a laser card which you can then activate on Steam. Feel free to post games I have not listed as I am sure to not get them all. Will update as necessary.

* = Use your Gamespy key to activate it on Steam.

** = Use your Gamespy key to activate it on Steam. Due to technical reasons all versions will be recognized and activated as Standard Edition

*** = This is compatible with Steam's version of Neverwinter Nights 2: Platinum. Installer will automatically install Mysteries of Westgate for use with the Steam version NW2 Platinum, to be on the safe side, it might then be best to set NW2: Platinum to "Do not automatically update this game".

**** = Saints Row 2 is very iffy when it comes to gamersgate and Steam. Apparently you CAN redeem the GG key on steam but it will be the German Censored version.
http://www.gamersgate.com/gametutor?issue=172581It has since been confirmed that they have changed the cd key to the retail version so all should be well now.

Yeah it seems GamersGate doesnt supply cd keys for some of those games (Velvet Assassin). So you can't activate them on Steam. Other online distributors such as Amazon Digital can be activated through Steam. Just not the GamersGate version unfortunately :(
Updated main list to reflect this.

I can confirm that GamersGate keys for Race 07, STCC and GTR Evolution all activate on Steam.

(edit: FWIW there are 2 versions of STCC on GamersGate, one (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-STCCX/stcc-expansion) is simply an expansion for Race 07 and the other (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-STCC/stcc-the-game) is a bundle including Race 07 itself.)

Also, although I cannot confirm this, I've seen complaints (via Twitter and at least one fan site that I unfortunately cannot remember the name of) that adding the key for Saints Row to Steam unlocks the low violence German language version of the game. So people may not want to add that one to Steam.

Perhaps someone with experience of this one can confirm?

Are you sure I'll get a CD-key to use on Steam for Metro 2033? It's going to be 75% off tomorrow on GG and I'm thinking of getting it there.

Thanks Zorlac!

How do you know it will be on sale tomorrow?

Said so in an email to me by GG. Apparently it's THQ Week on there.
Tomorrow (Friday) it's Metro 2033 (75% off), Saturday Company of Heroes Complete Pack 50% off and on Sunday the Red Faction Complete Pack will be 60% off. Warhammer 40K: DoW II is on sale today according to the thread you can activate it on Steam.

Also, if you're interested in Metro 2033 there's a demo of it available, just not on Steam. Google it.

What is wrong with you?

To OP: They used to have Prey on GG, which could be activated on Steam, but they ran out of keys months ago and they apparently didn't move a finger to get some more. I know because I have my copy sitting in my game's list since at least december.

I haven't made any attempts at refunding because I got it for such a ridiculously low price that it doesn't really matter.

They did try to get more keys. But as the publisher and developer are involved in a legal wrangle connected to the game, no new keys are being issued to anyone.

I dont think the GamersGate version of it can be activated.

If it has Steamworks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Steam_titles) regardless of how you purchase it you should be able to activate it via Steam.

Although some games only have Steamworks on the Steam version.

Also what do you think about GamersGate in general? I'm adding pro's and con's to a .pdf I'm doing

View current progress here (https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0BxlVhdggM4Q8ZmFhNzc1NjAtZjAxYy00MThjLWIwNTc tZDE3ZDAxODZmODY3&hl=en&authkey=CKOv8Ac) (22/04/2011)

I'm putting together a .pdf that not only looks at why we are charged what we are charged but what you can do about it. Instead of just creating a constructive thread using every vulgarity imaginable because you're being charged $X dollars more for the same product and leaving it at that. It's a little more involved then that.

It's still a work in progress and it's probably quite a while away from being finished but contributions are welcomed and you'll be credited for it.

I've got a lot of articles, links and other bits and pieces gathered already but whatever you can provide will help.

22/04/2011 - The current focus is on what alternative options people have available to them

TL;DR - If enough people don't buy from Steam, prices will change.

Personally I love it. The use of lasercards (especially the ♥♥♥♥ty irish one) and the massive deals make it a great site for me. I desperatly wanted Magicka when it came out and GamersGate is the only place I could find that would take my laser card.
I also never thought I would pick up Metro 2033 for €4.99.

It always bothered me that GamersGate does not use SSL for logins. Account security is concern. Same goes for GOG. All the other services (Impulse Driven, Steam, Direct 2 Drive, Green Man Gaming, GFWL) direct you to an https site for logins.
GOG.com uses SSL for login and your account. GG uses SSL only for payments.

All of the games I listed *are* Steamworks in one form or another, including D&D (which is Steamworks for retail copies). And yes it needs mentioning, even for Killing Floor as sites such as GamersGate do not reference Steamworks directly. They indirectly refer to it as a "third party client and download" which, if you didn't know about Steam, doesn't mean a whole lot of anything.

Thus this thread helps those who are new to the terms used by Steam's competitors. Not to mention that a lot of retail sold games don't even directly reference that they must be added to Steam either...

Further to that, those buying from GamersGate in Japan will probably be able to get the uncut ROW version as opposed to the cut Japanese language only version sold on Steam. Only downside is that the DLC sold on Steam in Japan won't work (it will have to be gifted from a region that provides English language versions).

Retail copies =/= GamersGate copies. Currently only new games advertised as "third party download required" can be added to Steam. The only exception are a few legacy games (games released before RUSE) that were released prior to GamersGate's refusal to sell any game that was connected to Steam (which ended when they released RUSE as a test case).

You can add "Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate" to the list as being compatible with Steam's version of Neverwinter Nights 2: Platinum. While you don't use the "Activate a product on Steam" option, the installer will automatically install Mysteries of Westgate for use with the Steam version NW2 Platinum. However, just to be on the safe side, it might then be best to set NW2: Platinum to "Do not automatically update this game".

It's page on GamersGate says it's DRM-free, so this means no.

Steam is a form of DRM (even if it doesn't feel like it), so keep in mind on GamersGate, if it's redeemable on Steam it will say:
"DRM: Requires 3rd-party download and account" or something along those lines anyway...

This doesn't always mean Steam, although it usually does. To be sure, cross-reference it with this list of games you can redeem on Steam with a key here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

It was $2 on Steam as well during the recent Summer Sale, and if I'm not mistaken it's been priced at $2 before on Steam too. If you wait long enough it's nearly guaranteed to show up again.

What about FEAR 2? It is on sale, but it only says: "SecuROM DRM".
I thought it's a steamworks game. (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601)

OK, I've found an answer to my question in an other thread. It's probabaly the same case with the GG version. Thanks to Yotsuba.

D2D's version of FEAR 2 does NOT use Steamworks. It uses SecuROM as it's DRM and cannot be added to Steam.

While this isn't stated on the original FEAR 2 product page, it is mentioned on the DLC page:
"F.E.A.R. 2 Reborn does not work with CD or STEAM versions of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin."

This is because FEAR 2 was added to D2D way back when they were refusing to sell Steamworks titles and thus, they had the developer/publisher remove Steamworks and replace it with SecuROM. The same is true of the GamersGate version.

Edgarstrong

That's a shame, really. I wanted to add FEAR 2 to my library as well. But definitely won't be paying the current full price for it.

P.S. I just saw that FEAR 2 costs as much as the entire FEAR 1 + 2 collection which includes both FEAR and FEAR 2 and 3 expansion packs. That's really weird. Sorry for off-topic though.

While you can't register the GTA games to Steam, you can use the GTA IV expansions with Steam's version of the base game as those are registered through the GFWL client.

what about Hard Reset (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-HR/hard-reset)? the storepage says:
DRM:Requires a 3rd party download and account

No, their version doesn't use Steamworks.
Personally, I'm waiting for it to be on sale on Desura or the developer's store because I want the Linux version.

So, anyone know if Impulse D&D Daggerdale registers on Steam?

Wouldn't it be better to have just one thread for GamersGate, Impulse and Direct2Drive?
Just add a little note to the games that are actually handled differently, since in most cases they are either activatable from all of them or from none.

You can activate Supreme Commander and Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance using a GG serial now. If you activate a SC key from the Gold edition you get both games. FA key doesn't do anything. Don't know how this works if you got the games separately.

The store page says 'DRM: DRM Free', so the answer would be no, it won't activate on Steam. If you really want it on Steam just wait for the Thanksgiving or Christmas sales which are coming soon. I'd be surprised if Bastion wouldn't have atleast a 50% discount during those sales.

That is what I thought. I missed the Bastion Sale on Steam and now Iīll have to wait till the next sale. Oh well, at least Iīve got Skyrim to keep me busy

there is still Hard Reset (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-HR/hard-reset) missing on the list. i can confirm that you can "activate" this game on Steam.

also the Sanctum DLC bought on GG works with Steam as well. you can even mix it. (e.g. i bought Sanctum here, but have the most DLC from GG)

the other DRM refers to this:
APOX; Proprietary server connection. There is no authentication, but a constant Internet connection is required for anything other than campaign, skirmish and tutorial.

so i guess you can not activate the GG version of Apox here on Steam.

A quick question. Saints Row 2 is on the list, and it should be the english version, but on the GG site under DRM it says SecuROM. Is this a new version or can one still activate it on Steam? Itīs on sale for €3.38

As manicminer says it works, you can choose to view cd key and put it into steam. I just picked it up from GG myself and now have it on my account.
