Whew, been 9 months since I've last visited. I miss this place.
Anywho, for those of you who are in college, what are you studying? I'm curious to compare the results from here vs. another forum I post on more regularly.
And if you have graduated either recently or in the past, I guess I'll be nice and let you post what your degree was in as well. :)

No offense my royal brahness but only hot chicks/rich kids can get away with doing useless degrees. If you go to college you better be doing something in science, engineering or business. I'm sure you've romanticized the idea of being a free spirit who does what he pleases, but come on music?? Your point is applicable to almost any university degree. Who says you can't study engineering with a few good books?
Job prospects are, of course, increased if you're doing an engineering or science degree but it is still no guarantee.
I'm doing an English degree and all I do is read a lot and write essays. Can you do this at home? Yes. Do you get the thrill of a Bachelor degree at the end? No. Also, university is more about learning about a variety of otherwise obscure topics such as post-colonial literature.
I do admit it is something I enjoy doing very much! I'm sure the average computer nerd also enjoys computer science. It could even be considered 'finger-painting' to him or her!

My sister-in-law put a lot of effort into music study all through High School, while her teachers were telling her "You'll never get a job with that, you need to apply yourself to something useful". She went to Jazz School after she finished school and now has a job teaching singing, and has regular gigs with a couple of bands that she sings in.
I can think of worse things to get degrees in!

That is the most stupid answer i've ever heard...yes, if you do those, you might have more chances of being "successful", but for many of us, these are freaking ♥♥♥♥ty domaine.
If you can give the effort of doing something you LIKE instead of something that is reputable, then go ahead. I prefer doing my life with a lesser salary but enjoying my job, compared to get get rich and have a boring, annoying job.
I'm currently studying as an artist (in 3D), luckily there's plenty of opportunities where i live to get a good job, but even if there wasnt, I would do that job or a similar job (concept artist, etc).
If this guy is good at music and wants to do music and gives all the effort to find his place then why not? Intead of going into the confort, safety zone of ordinary jobs.

It depends on where you end up. I was just there for QA but I was working alongside several designers and modelers. I had the incredible chance of being able to learn through them.
QA is not a career. It's a temporary job.
As for Ubisoft itself, it's seems to be an amazing place to work at.

ZBrush is just a weird (but amazingly awesome) program. It's a sculpting package, but not purely a sculpting package. Even though it doesn't have a poly modeler, you can use it's ZSpheres in re-topologizing the poly cage or even in ZSphere modeling. It's main integration, at least in the pipelines I've used it in, has been for sculpting however.
For polygonal modeling, I have to choose Max or a C4D (my first exposure to 3D was via an AutoCAD class in highschool) hands-down. Normally, when I worked in Maya, I would find myself going back to Max for modeling. however, if I'm doing NURBS or surface/patch modeling, Maya seems to be the easiest to work with.
If you're doing film animation, or even character animation, I take Maya over any other software. Their muscle system destroys anything else I've seen (either plugin or stock). I'm also partial to Maya if I'm creating non-real-time surface shaders (Max for real-time since it has built-in DirectX support). The node-based system in the hypervisor just makes so much more sense to me. That and it was the first application to connect in Python to an already extensive MEL API.
That said, I always attempt to try any new software available. It never hurts to be familiar with more than one or two packages, especially if you want to bounce around from games to film to visualization to CAD.

I really hate having to transfer. The engineering department has something called a PAF (Program Admission Factor) which drops your mark (usually about 0.4) when you transfer to engineering so that you match up with the engineering students (which is bullcrap, I did the same math as them, HARDER physics, the same chem, and MUCH HARDER English, all they did more than me was the Engg classes) since Engg is supposedly 'harder' than anything else you might be transferring from.
However, they also decided to add a program wide gpa cut off you need to get into engineering in the first place, which I was told usually ranges between 3.0 and 3.2 (let's say it's 3.0). If you want to get into chemical engineering, you need a 2.1. For transfer students, you would need a 2.5 before the PAF. However, they still make it so you need to go up to a 3.0 which is just plain silly. If person A's GPA is 0.1 less than person B's, person A should be able to get into any program with an admission grade of at least 0.1 lower. However, if B ends up having a 3.0 and A has a 2.9, even though A has the grade for the all (minus biomedical and maybe mechanical) engineering departments, he might not get in. He could even be and probably is smarter than most of the engineering students (average is 2.5 and with a PAF of 0.3 or less [which is what it should be, 0.5 is too high to be applied to every single case], the 2.9 has a higher grade than the majority).

-Biomolecular engineering (derivative of chemE applied to pharmaceuticals/medicine)
-Business with an emphasis on management/finance
-Possibly one of the other dozen minors that are insanely interesting
Got a 4.0 GPA currently, maybe one B this semester due to a poor physics teacher. Gonna get it replaced at community college over the summer while during research off time.
So many good opportunities after undergrad. MBA, MD, JD, PharmD, 60k minimum starting salary in industry.
If you're looking at uni, do yourself a favor and pick hard science/engineering/business, some type of pre professional degree. Also, forget the booze/partying and just hit the books. Best decision I've ever made.

Well, i'm in the Uni, Doing a Bachelor in 3D art, concept, design, modeling, etc....
and i still go out and party, but i work like a boss.
If i had followed your tip i would not be happy.
Each people has their way, nothing is better then other things.
Party hard but work harder. Render time = sleep or party....or both. It was always fun to have render parties all the people working on the projects went out to the bars as sleep-deprived as they were. Good times!

College students can't afford a Render Farm :D (or at least I couldn't with the prices for core hour of the farms that were allied with our program (it gets pricey when you're doing 4 passes on 8 mins of uncut animation), unless you count taking over one or two the labs for a weekend plus all of our personal comps.

Yea.. it's true. I'm not one to go to college for 3D Art. I've been looking at GNOMON though to get a more official training and flesh out a portfolio. I do have my own Render Farm (little one that is) so I think i'll be good to go. :p

You have a really good chance of getting into professional school with that gpa and chem knowledge. The premed exams in most countries are usually focused on organic chem and physics, both of which I assume are covered thoroughly in your course.

Oh yea, quite a bit.
Curious, are you in med school right now, or are you premed undergrad?

Don't know if this counts as breaking the OP's rules, but I don't care:
Nautical college drop-out here....
Dropped out cause I had an issue and a heated argument with the math professor... She had a degree in nuclear physics and expected us all to be at her level... And she had absolutely no "teaching ability" in her. I stood up to her on more than one occasion, and I used a different system of calculations than she did (but my outcomes were always correct)... Needless to say, that didn't go over well, and she made sure I'd never graduate... As soon as I realised that, I left... And to this day I still hold a grudge against her for coming between me and my dream.... Obtuse old hag.

why didnt you simply try again the next year?
why you simply didnt try the next year?
I did.... I did my first year twice... she wouldn't budge... and apparently, this wasn't the first time she pulled that ♥♥♥♥, apparently she does that every year, single out one individual and break him or her...
I tried to go over her head, but the dean said he couldn't do anything about it, since she has tenure... And he's been looking for a nice and legal way to get rid of her for years now...
I never hold grudges, but there's only two people in the world that make the exception and I seriously hate with a passion, and she's one of them...
Well, I've come to terms with the fact I'll never become an STCW95 certified merchant navy officer... I just need to vent once in a while... ;)
